Abstract

Teacher is hoped to be the spearhead of the progress of human civilization. Teacher needs to have a toolwhich enables him or her to perform such a role. The tool which is the most likely to be hoped is curriculum ofwhich he or she works with. The problem is what kinds of curriculum which functions as a reliable and practicaltool. The answer is that such a curriculum must be a standardized one. Then, the teacher must be able totranslate what is intended by the curriculum in the classroom. Furthermore, the teacher must have the abilityto be the curriculum developer.The other problem that needs an attention if we want to discuss the role of teacher dealing with theprogress of human civilization is about the educational reformation. The other consideration is about theconcept of teacher as an investment not only as an employee as the worker of factory. The welfare of teachersis also the object of consideration.Key words: curriculum, human civilization, and teacher

Abstract

The problems are the fact that We, I, and He are all used to represent God in the Holy Quran translated in English, the fact that You does not always refer to the Prophet, and the possibility to use the Direct and Indirect speeches to answer the problems having mentioned. The problems arise because the researcher was informed that the only human being who God speaks directly to him is Moses. Thus, in the Holy Quran, there should not be found We or I because We or I implies that God speaks directly to the Prophet. After the researcher investigates one the longest sura namely Baqara or the Heifer, he finds that the third singular pronoun for God He with all of its derivations (Him and His) appears 85 times, the first plural pronoun for God We with all of its derivations (Our, Ours, and Us) appears 19 times.

Abstract

Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) merupakan wujud nyata dari tugas mahasiswa dalam melaksanakan Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi yakni aspek pengabdian masyarakat. Melalui kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat Desa Loano, menciptakan sinergi antara perguruan tinggi dengan masyarakat sebagai wujud dari ilmu demokrasi. Tujuan pengabdian ini adalah untuk mengembangkan potensi-potensi yang ada dan menjadikannya sebagai wahana destinasi edukasi sekaligus pariwisata. Pengabdian dilakukan dalam bentuk kegiatan pelestarian cagar budaya di Museum Adipati Gagak Handoko sebagai destinasi edukasi dan pariwisata bagi generasi muda, revitalisasi permainan tradisional, promosi Museum Adipati Gagak Handoko, pengadaan brosur dan pamflet paket wisata, dan opening paket wisata. Hasil pengabdian menunjukkan adanya semangat dan antusiasme baik dari masyarakat Desa Loano itu sendiri maupun masyarakat diluar Desa Loano terhadap kegaiatan pelestarian cagar budaya yang ada di desa Loano.

Abstract

Pentingnya peran agama dalam kehidupan manusia tidak diragukan lagi. Banyak agama yang lahir ratusan bahkan ribuan tahun yang lalu masih diakui keberadaannya hingga saat ini. Yudaisme, Kristen, dan Islam merupakan tiga agama besar yang pengikutnya mempunyai pengaruh besar pada perkembangan peradaban manusia sedunia. Dalam kitab suci ketiga agama tersebut terdapat kisah tentang Nabi Yusuf. Dalam kitab suci Islam, kisah Nabi Yusuf dikatakan sebagai kisah terbaik. Tujuan diadakannya penelitian ini adalah, pertama, untuk mengetahui keistimewaan Al-Qu'ran berbahasa Inggris terjemahan Abdullah Yusuf Ali di mana kisah tentang Nabi Yusuf ditemukan. Kedua, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memanfaatkan temuan dan pendapat cendekiawan muslim kelas dunia yang dapat mendukung tujuan pertama penelitian ini. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif atau library research dengan menggunakan teknik note taking yang memanfaatkan teknologi informasi atau jaringan internet. Hasil penelitian ini adalah bahwa Kitab Suci Al-Qur’an dapat digunakan dalam pembelajaran Literary Appreciation yang merupakan salah satu mata kuliah di Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo. Kemudahan memperoleh kitab suci terjemahan itu dan kualitas terjemahannya menjadi alasan utamanya. Diketahui pula bahwa cendekawan muslim yang meneliti kisah Nabi Yusuf adalah Mustansir Mir, seorang akademisi asal Pakistan yang mengajar di beberapa universitas ternama di Amerika Serikat. Dalam mengkaji kisah Nabi Yusuf, akademisi ini menemukan tiga perangkat sastra dalam Surah Yusuf, yaitu alur, tema, dan tokoh. Dengan demikian, kisah Nabi Yusuf ini dapat dimasukkan sebagai materi tambahan dalam perkuliahan Literary Appreciation di Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dengan mensinergikan karya Abdullah Yusuf Ali dan Mustansir Mir. Materi tambahan ini diharapkan menjadi salah satu ciri khas Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah. Abstract

In this digital era, translators cannot ignore the advantages of using machine translation. This research aims to compare the translation works carried out by machine translation with human translator in translating Indonesian short story into English. In comparing, the researcher focuses on the finite changes between machine translation and human translator. The research method used is descriptive-qualitative method proposed by Enio Cipani and comparative study by Robert L Stake. Meanwhile, for the finite changes, the researcher uses Jim Miller's theory of finite and non-finite clauses. Related to the data, he chooses one of the short stories on the page of Dalang Publishing, a publisher based in San Mateo, California, United States, namely Han Gagas’ short story Pekik Burung Kedasi di Tepi Kahayan which was translated by Umar Thamrin becoming Crying Cuckoos over the Kahayan. The findings of this research are that the Indonesian short story which originally had 2844 words after being translated into English by a translation machine, i.e.  Google Translate, became 3487 words. Meanwhile, a human translator translated it into 3210 words. Regarding sentences, the sentences in the Indonesian short story, whose total number is 241 sentences, after being translated by the machine translation became 242 sentences. Meanwhile, the human translator translated it 254 sentences. Focusing on the finite, 297 fundamental changes were found in the works of machine translation compared with human translator (including the changes of nouns, adjectives, etc.). Moreover, among those changes, there were 213 finite changes. It means that 71.72% of finites in the text translated by machine translation underwent the finite changes. Thus, it can be concluded that concerning the sense of sentences, the work of machine translation was quite different from the human translator in translating a short story from Indonesian into English.

Abstract

In an effort to facilitate the Kebumen Regency Vocational High School English teachers regarding the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, community service is carried out by the English Education Study Program team. The objectives of the community service, i.e.: (1) explaining the concept of project-based learning, learning steps, benefits of PjBL and providing examples of its application in English subjects; (2) describing ways to develop and utilize interesting written text-based materials to design English learning; (3) Providing an explanation of concrete steps for solving learning problems in the classroom through classroom action research (CAR) and other classroom research as an effort to increase teacher professional competence. The service partner is a SMK English teacher in the Kebumen Regency MGMP group which was held at Kebumen State Vocational School 2 on Saturday, March 11 2023. The service activity is held face to face. The results of this activity can be described as follows: (1) participants are able to understand the concept of project-based learning, learning steps, PjBL benefits and examples of application in English subjects; (2 participants were able to develop and utilize interesting written text-based materials to design English learning; (3) participants were able to solve learning problems in class through classroom action research (CAR) and other classroom research.. Abstract

Research on the relevance of the first South Korean film winning the 92th Academy Award with Islamic teachings found in the Koran is important to conduct because of the popularity of South Korean films in Indonesia. The phenomenon that South Korean films have become the favourite films of young people has been acknowledged. Due to the popularity of Korean films among young Indonesians, the researcher would like to describe the relevance of Bong Joon-ho’s movie Parasite to Islamic teachings found in the Koran. Because most of Indonesia's population (86.7%) are Islam followers, the findings will be of necessity. The method used is the Mixed Method (Hesse-Biber, 2010) involving a triangulation approach (Oliver-Hayo and Allen, 2006). The data is mainly obtained from the available English subtitles belonging to the film. Based on the analysis and interpretation of the data, the researcher describes the relevance of the movie to the verses in the Koran. Kim Ki-taek, one of the main characters, believes that life is merely to undergo, no need to plan. This is in accordance with the verses in the Koran that support the concept of Jabariyah (at least 2 verses). Kim Ki-woo, another main character, believes the opposite, namely that life needs to be planned. And this is in accordance with the concept of Qadariyah which is contained in the verses of the Koran (at least in 3 verses). There are couples or binary opposition between rich and poor, innocent and sly, etc. that can easily be found. This is in accordance with the verses of the Koran about creatures that were created in pairs (at least 3 verses). In the film there is a scholar's rock, which becomes something special. In the Koran, the special wooden staff or rod belonging to the Prophet Moses can be found (at least 3 verses). And as a whole the movie metaphorically depicts the world and its contents which are just mere games and jokes that can be found in the verses of the Koran (at least 2 verses).

Abstract

The problems faced by teachers at SMA Negeri 9 Purworejo are the lack of understanding of popular scientific article writing techniques and the lack of knowledge about obtaining ideas or concepts to be used as a thesis. The Community Service Activity of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in collaboration with SMA Negeri 9 Purworejo aims to facilitate teachers in understanding popular scientific article writing techniques and knowledge about obtaining ideas or concepts to be used as a thesis. The method used is a lecture followed by questions and answers and writing practice. The lecture material is mainly in the form of popular scientific article writing techniques. The competence to write popular scientific articles is useful for teachers, especially to meet the requirements for promotion. In addition, teachers have the opportunity to share knowledge not only in class or at school but also with the wider community. This community service activity is a trigger for motivation for teachers to write down their ideas or concepts before being refined into popular scientific articles. The writings of the teachers in the form of theses which are the most important part of popular scientific articles are appreciated by the resource persons by discussing their advantages and how to improve their shortcomings. By discussing the thesis in the form of sentences, writings and the enthusiasm of the teachers that appeared in the question and answer session, workshop activities containing material presentations by resource persons followed by questions and answers and the practice of writing popular scientific articles. By appreciating and discussing the theses written by these teachers, more or less, it has been able to overcome the problems faced by most teachers regarding the lack of understanding of the techniques for writing popular scientific articles and the lack of knowledge about obtaining ideas or concepts to be used as the thesis for writing

Abstract

ABSTRAK: Di era digital ini, penerjemah tidak bisa mengabaikan keuntungan penggunaan mesin penerjemah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan karya penerjemahan yang dilakukan oleh mesin penerjemah dengan penerjemah manusia dalam menerjemahkan cerita pendek berbahasa Indonesia ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Dalam membandingkan, peneliti memusatkan pada perubahan finite antara mesin penerjemah dan penerjemah manusia. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif-kualitatif yang dipaparkan oleh Enio Cipani dan studi komparatif oleh Robert L Stake. Sementara itu, untuk perubahan finite, peneliti menggunakan teori finite dan non-finite clause yang ditulis oleh Jim Miller. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti memilih salah satu cerita pendek di laman Dalang Publishing, penerbit yang berpusat di San Mateo, California, Amerika Serikat, yaitu cerita pendek karya Han Gagas Pekik Burung Kedasi di Tepi Kahayan yang diterjemahkan oleh Umar Thamrin menjadi Crying Cuckoos over the Kahayan. Temuan penelitian ini adalah cerita pendek Indonesia yang awalnya memiliki 2844 kata setelah diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris oleh mesin penerjemah, yaitu Google Translate, menjadi 3487 kata. Sementara itu, penerjemah manusia menerjemahkannya menjadi 3.210 kata. Kalimat dalam cerpen berbahasa Indonesia yang berjumlah 241 kalimat setelah diterjemahkan oleh mesin penerjemah menjadi 242 kalimat. Sementara itu, penerjemah manusia menerjemahkannya sebanyak 254 kalimat. Jika dipusatkan pada finite, ditemukan 297 perubahan mendasar dalam karya penerjemah mesin dibandingkan dengan penerjemah manusia (termasuk perubahan kata benda, kata sifat, dan sebagainya). Selain itu, di antara perubahan tersebut, terdapat 213 perubahan finite. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa 71,72% finite dalam teks yang diterjemahkan oleh penerjemah mesin mengalami perubahan. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa makna kalimat atau sense hasil penerjemahan mesin penerjemah mengalami perubahan lebih dari 50% bila dibandingkan dengan hasil penerjemahan penerjemah manusia.Kata Kunci: penerjemah mesin, Google Translate, penerjemah manusia, cerpen berbahasa Indonesia, finite.

Abstract

This study investigates the improvement of Video Assisted Project-Based Learning (VAPBL) in improving learners' speaking skills. While VAPBL, has been employed in many studies, the development of learners' speaking skills in terms of fluency, accuracy, and coherence has received less attention in the literature. Twenty-two learners from the language class of Secondary School, participated in the study. The investigation employed Classroom Action Research design to measure the outcome of VAPBL on learners' speaking proficiency. The two cycles involved selecting appropriate video materials and designing project-based learning activities aligned with curriculum objectives. There are two cycles in this research and each cycle consist of three meetings. During the application phase, learners engaged in VAPBL activities over a specified period, including watching videos, participating in discussions, and completing project-based tasks. The findings revealed a significant advancement in learners' speaking abilities following the application of VAPBL. Moreover, in the questionnaire the learners’ perception have positive outcome of VAPBL in language learning activities. This study underscores the importance of interactive and collaborative learning environments facilitated by VAPBL in enhancing learners' speaking skills.
