Abstract

This Community Service activity was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Batukliang, Central Lombok, a senior high school offering a science (IPA) program and supported by the availability of a chemistry laboratory. The school faces several challenges, including a curriculum that has yet to incorporate real-life applications of chemistry, limited student understanding of chemical separation techniques, and inadequate laboratory facilities and infrastructure. This community service program aimed to introduce and demonstrate various separation techniques including extraction, distillation, and chromatography through interactive lectures, educational videos, and simple hands-on experiments, including processes like extraction, Soxhletation, and distillation. Through this activity, students not only gained theoretical knowledge but also practical experience in applying separation techniques and observing the products generated from these processes. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in supporting quality education. The program is expected to enhance students’ scientific literacy and serve as an initial step toward raising awareness of the importance of chemistry in everyday life.

Abstract

Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera), a valuable source of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannin, and terpenoids. These compounds provide significant benefits to the skin, due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The chemical composition of these leaves has been demonstrated to enhance dermal hydration and provide protection against environmental stressors. By balancing Moringa with other natural ingredients such as coconut, olive, and palm oil, the efficacy of skincare formulation can be optimized, resulting in improved texture, stability, and consumer appeal. This research aims to optimize the soap's effectiveness by enhancing its properties, such as cleansing, moisturizing, and antimicrobial functions, using the unique characteristics of Moringa oleifera. The initial step involved of an ethanol extract of Moringa leaves, which was then subjected to analysis using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The analysis revealed that Moringa leaves contain eight key compounds, including 2.4(1H,3H)-pyrimidineodione, glycerol, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-, 4,3-allyl-6-methoxyphenol, epoxylinalool, 1H-pyrrole, 2-(2,4,6-heptatrienyl), tetradecanoics acid, and hexadecanoic acid. The aforementioned compounds were used to formulate a soap base containing Moringa leaves. The resulting soap exhibit a pleasant fragrance, a dense texture, yellow slightly white in color, and a pH of 10, as confirmed by organoleptic and pH test. The recent focus resulting in the development of Moringa-based skincare product that are not only effective but also eco-friendly. Present study represents a promising approach to natural solution that cater to diverse skin types and consumer preferences.

Abstract

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are important prebiotics synthesized by the enzymatic activity of inulosucrase, and understanding their molecular interactions is essential for exploring potential modulators. This study examined the interaction between inulosucrase from Aspergillus awamori (PDB ID: 1Y4W) and the compound EPE (4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazine ethanesulfonic acid) using an in silico molecular docking approach. Since the 1Y4W structure lacks a co-crystallized ligand, EPE was selected as a surrogate ligand derived from PDB ID: 3SC7 and prepared for docking simulations. Docking with AutoDock Vina produced a best binding affinity of "“5.6 kcal/mol, with the strongest hydrogen bond observed with TRP305 (1.92 Ã…) and additional interactions with TYR279 (3.75 Ã…). These results indicate a moderate but stable interaction, weaker than the native substrate fructose reported in crystallographic studies. Overall, EPE shows potential as a modulatory compound of inulosucrase activity and provides a basis for further enzymological and biotechnological research.

Abstract

Monjok Kebon Jaya Barat, Mataram, has rich natural resource potential, including the Moringa plant (Moringa oleifera) which is known for its skin health benefits. Although the local community has utilised moringa leaves in daily consumption, the great potential for further processing, such as making herbal soap, has not been maximised. Herbal soap made from moringa leaves can be a safer alternative to cleaning products, reduce dependence on harmful chemicals, and support a green economy. This programme aims to empower women health cadres in Monjok Kebon Jaya Barat through skills training in making herbal soap made from moringa leaves. The method used involved three main stages: activity preparation, soap-making training, and sustainability evaluation. In the training, participants were given theoretical and practical knowledge on the benefits of moringa leaves, the saponification process, and herbal soap making. The evaluation showed that most participants were able to follow the training well, although there were some technical constraints related to ingredient measurement and temperature control. The programme had a positive impact on skills enhancement and economic empowerment. The training is effective in introducing herbal soap making and can be a sustainable business opportunity. It is recommended to provide continuous assistance in marketing and the formation of joint business groups to improve the sustainability and welfare of the local community.

Abstract

SMA Darul Hikmah Mataram is one of the private secondary education institutions in the city of Mataram with the existence of a school that is still beautiful and surrounded by many medicinal plants. The existence of horse whip leaves (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis) in this school is very abundant and still underutilised. Horse whip leaves are useful as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. Chemical compounds contained in horse whip leaves are flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, tannins, steroids, and saponins. Herbal drinks are one of the practical products that can be processed into antioxidant-rich drinks using very cheap and easy packaging. This activity aims to increase the knowledge of teachers and students at SMA Darul Hikmah Mataram about making drinks, educate and increase the use of horse whip leaves as herbal drinks at SMA Darul Hikmah Mataram, show training participants the processing of horse whip leaves as herbal drinks, and increase product value related to packaging and processing of horse whip leaves as herbal drinks. The methods used were preparation, processing of horse whip leaves into powder, and evaluation. Evaluation is carried out through direct interviews and questions and answers. The results of this service are that the participants follow the entire series of activities well and are able to make pecut kuda herbal drinks in powder form and packaging with pouches, this activity is expected to be a government initiation for the development of local agricultural products in the form of herbs that have high selling value.

Abstract

Molecular docking is a widely applied computational approach for predicting the binding modes of small-molecule ligands within the active site of a target protein. This research investigated the interactions of mutant levansucrase E342A from Bacillus subtilis (PDB ID: 1PT2) for β-D-fructofuranose and D-glucopyranose ligands. Using AutoDock Vina, the docking results indicated that β-D-fructofuranose exhibited a higher binding energy of –5.6 kcal/mol, compared to D-glucopyranose with a value of –5.4 kcal/mol, suggesting a more stable interaction. It was supported by the binding interaction analysis of β-D-fructofuranose, which established five hydrogen bonds, including direct interactions with the key catalytic residues Asp86 (2.76 Å) and Asp247 (2.64 Å) that are essential for the enzymatic reaction. In contrast, D-glucopyranose formed four hydrogen bonds, involving Arg360 (3.07 Å) and Glu340 (2.64 Å), with most residues contributing to structural stabilization rather than direct catalysis. These results confirm that β-D-fructofuranose plays a crucial role as a determinant of levansucrase activity in the biosynthesis of levan-type FOS, which are known to exhibit strong prebiotic activity.
