Abstract

Recently, detecting and tracking people using infrared sensors in public surveillance has been given attention by many researchers since the global outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, and machine vision is bound to play an important role. In machine vision, sliding window approach has appeared as most promising approach. Since Papageorgious et al who proposed the first sliding window detetectors until Dalal et al who have come out with a large gains detector based on histogram adoption, the ideas of sliding in human detections continue to serve as a root for modern detectors. While there is increasing research in thermal spectrum, very little research focus on the effectiveness of state of art detectors in febrile mass screening application. The exposed area of head-to-shoulder is an important body part for region of interest detection priorly before the temperature of febrile person is measured by the thermal camera. In addition, some of the thermal datasets used in previous research are more fit to surveillance or safety applications where the targets are mostly far-scales. One of the challenges in detecting the pedestrian in thermal images is the nature and quality of image in infrared spectrum as well as the real crowd situation in public area that cause occlusion. Therefore in this paper, we are interested to evaluate the top three detectors’ performance on thermal images taken during fever screening in Kuala Lumpur International Airport. We also analyze the best approach to be adopted in the detection using a new context of training and evaluation.

Abstract

Besiq Bermai Forest is part of Kalimantan forests known for vast plant diversity. The present study aimed to investigate flora diversity, composition, and ecology in Besiq Bermai Forest to support the management of biodiversity and forest conservation. Thirteen plots were established with different sizes of plots (100 m x 20 m plots for trees; 40 m x 5 m plots for saplings; and 5 m x 5 m plots for understory). Data recorded included plant species name and individual number of each plant species. Data analysed were Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Relative Density, Relative Frequency, Relative Dominance and Important Value Index. The principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to determine relationship between edaphic components and flora occurrence. The results showed that there were 93 species of trees (belonging to 48 genera and 22 families), 112 species of saplings (belonging to 62 genera and 43 families), and 48 species of understory (belonging to 28 genera and 20 families). Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’) were 6.05, 6.25 and 3.26 for tree, saplings and understory, respectively. The most common family for tree and saplings in the forest ecosystem in this area was Dipterocarpaceae (Shorea spp). Species of tree with the highest importance value index were Dillenia excelsa, Syzygium sp. and Shorea parvifolia. The highest importance value index for species of saplings were Macaranga triloba and Shorea parvifolia; and for species of understory were Phrynium jagorianum. Ecological (edaphic) factors affecting the occurence and establishment of flora in Bermai forest were total N and C/N ratio. The present study has implication for the management of biodiversity and forest conservation.

Abstract

Tree architecture affects how rainwater is partitioned into canopy interception, throughfall, and stemflow. The canopy shape and bark/leaf surface morphology influence the plants' ability to intercept and redistribute rainwater. Therefore, tree structure plays a key role in soil and water conservation, particularly in reducing erosion and runoff. This research was conducted to predict the most suitable tree species for soil and water conservation and recorded 32 rainfall events during the rainy season from January 2014 to March 2015 in Purwodadi–LIPI, Indonesia. The stemflow, throughfall, individual tree architectural characteristics, and leaf morphology were measured for eight selected local tree species, namely: Sterculia cordata, Aleurites moluccana, Buchanania arborescens, Calophyllum inophyllum, Dysoxylum gaudichaudianum, Peltophorum pterocarpum, Alstonia scholaris, and Pometia pinnata. The species that showed the greatest interception capacity was Aleurites moluccana, with 68.1% of rainfall intercepted. Special leaf characteristics (such as fine hairs), globose stems, and long, grooved bark likely contributed to a greater relative interception of rainwater compared to other species. The throughfall and stemflow of each species were closely correlated with rainfall amount but not with rainfall intensity.
