Abstract

This study provides a literature review on 5G New Radio (NR) performance, focusing on three key physical layer parameters: Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR), and Throughput. By synthesizing 15 research papers from 2015–2026, the analysis reveals that SINR is the most critical predictor of throughput, with a strong correlation coefficient of 0.85. The findings highlight that while RSRP ensures coverage, SINR determines the actual data rate, which varies significantly across urban, industrial, and highway environments. The study identifies research gaps in KPI threshold standardization and the comparative performance of 5G Standalone (SA) versus Non-Standalone (NSA) architectures.

Abstract

The increasing complexity of modern computer networks requires flexible, efficient, and manageable network architectures. Software Defined Networking has emerged as a networking paradigm that separates the control plane from the data plane, enabling centralized and dynamic network management. This study aims to analyze network performance in SDN architecture using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The methodology follows the PRISMA framework to ensure a systematic and transparent literature selection process. Relevant studies were collected from major scientific databases and analyzed based on performance parameters, including throughput, latency, jitter, and scalability. The results indicate that SDN implementation improves throughput by 20%–84.6% with an average of 53.2%, reduces latency by 15%–39.3% with an average of 27.4%, reduces jitter by 10%–31.5% with an average of 18.8%, and improves scalability by 18%–42% with an average of 29.6%. Routing optimization and programmable data plane approaches contributed the most to throughput improvement, while machine learning-based approaches were more effective in reducing latency and optimizing network traffic adaptively. However, no single approach can be considered universally optimal, as effectiveness depends on the implementation context. Furthermore, the dominance of simulation-based studies highlights the need for further validation in real-world network environments. This study provides a comprehensive synthesis to support SDN performance optimization strategies and future research directions.

Abstract

The development of cellular networks toward 5G and 6G introduces new challenges related to flexibility, efficiency, and interoperability in the Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture. Traditional RAN architectures, which are monolithic and proprietary in nature, are considered insufficient to meet the increasingly complex demands of modern communication networks. Therefore, the concept of Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) has emerged as a solution through an open, distributed, and virtualization-based approach. This study aims to examine the development of the O-RAN concept in modern cellular network architectures using a literature review method with a qualitative approach. The research data were obtained from 10 reputable international journals published between 2020 and 2025 and analyzed using descriptive, comparative, and critical approaches. The results show that O-RAN represents a significant evolution from previous RAN architectures by improving network flexibility and interoperability through the implementation of open interfaces and the multi-vendor concept. The integration of supporting technologies such as Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) also enhances network efficiency, automation, and adaptive capabilities in real-time. Furthermore, several implementation studies indicate that O-RAN is capable of delivering competitive network performance while supporting deployment flexibility for 5G networks and future 6G development. However, the implementation of O-RAN still faces several challenges, including system integration complexity, interoperability among vendors, high computational requirements, and network security issues. This study contributes a comprehensive literature synthesis regarding the evolution, supporting technologies, implementation challenges, and future development directions of O-RAN in modern cellular networks. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for developing more open, flexible, adaptive, and sustainable cellular network architectures.

Abstract

The rapid development of cellular communication technology demands networks with high capacity, low latency, and optimal service quality, particularly in urban areas with high user density. 5G networks have emerged as a solution to meet these demands by offering improved speed and network efficiency. However, the performance of 5G networks is still influenced by the number of users connected within a cell. The main parameters used to measure network quality include Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR), and throughput. This study aims to analyze the effect of user density on these three parameters in 5G networks in urban areas. The research method used is a qualitative approach through a literature review by examining various relevant scientific journals, conference proceedings, and academic publications. Data collection was conducted through documentation study, while data analysis employed a descriptive qualitative method. The results show that user density has different impacts on each network parameter. RSRP tends to remain stable and is more influenced by environmental factors, while SINR decreases due to increased interference. Throughput is the most affected parameter due to the sharing of network resources. Overall, an increase in user density leads to a decline in the quality of 5G networks in urban areas.
