Abstract

The real cause of Soeharto’s fall from the Indonesian presidency remains a mystery. Richard Mann (1998) launched three significant rhetorical questions, i.e. (1) Was President Soeharto toppled by student demonstrators and people’s power? (2) Was he brought down by the withdrawal of support from the United States? (3) Or, was his sudden fall brought about by all of the two plus large doses of Oriental plotting and scheming? This paper attempts to analyze Richard Mann’s PSBDS in terms of its macrostructure in order to find out the real cause of Soeharto’s fall. The analysis is substantiated by different resources as linguistic evidences, to justify the validity of the findings. The study critical reading is the key to successful comprehension of a text, of which crosschecking with other resources is one. Key words: rhetorical questions, people’s power, oriental plotting and scheming, macrostructure, critical reading

Abstract

This research dealt with the interpretation of Great Poems ‘Kalatidha’ written by a Great Poet Rangga Warsita to investigate whether history repeats over times. Things that occurred hundreds of years ago repeat nowadays in different manifestations. In addition, the moral messages contained in the poems of Jaman Edan (Crazy Age) were also found ‘relevant’ to the model of quality assurance undertaken by private higher education, namely mostly committing public dishonesty with respect to the process of accreditation by the National Board of Accreditation for Higher Education (BAN PT). Meanwhile the new paradigm of BAN PT was also highlighted   Key Words: Serat Kalatidha, Poems, Poet Quality Assurance, BAN PT.

Abstract

Abstract

This artile presents Systemic Functional Linguistics as an extension of Prague School in competency-based language learning and literacy education. Unlike  Bloomfield who considers that utterances are element   (-emes) and  Chomsky who considers utterances as rules, the Prague School of Linguistics considers utterances as function (motor). Utterances are means of expressing meanings which, by Halliday, are described in three domains: Ideational, interpersonal and textual. Most educational practitioners have taken up Halliday’s principles in developing competency-based language learning and literacy education. Key words: Prague School, Systemic Functional Linguistics, ompetency-based language learning, literacy education.

Abstract

The study aims at analyzing the achievement of Minimum Service Standards (MSS) in Basic Education through a case study at Semarang Municipality. The findings shall be used as a starting point to predict the needs to meet MMS by 2015 and to provide strategies for achievement. Both primary and secondary data were used in the study investigating the gap between the real achievements and the standards as set out in MMS in terms of the number of schools and classrooms, support facilities, teachers, education staff, including books and teaching media. A little bit of non-personnel budgeting was also observed to be matched with the standards as set out by Education Ministry No. 69 / 2009. It turned out that classrooms and teachers outnumbered in Semarang with reference to the distribution of students and teachers according to national MMS even seemingly a waste of money. Teachers were abundant 2010 and would remain as such in 2015. Classrooms for Elementary Schools would be sufficient up to 2015, and six additional classrooms would be needed for Junior High Schools. However teachers’ qualifications were far from fulfilling MMS including the school principals. There lacked support facilities including books and teaching media. Meanwhile non-personnel budgets were low including allocation of funds for school supplies. Therefore, it is high time that City Government prioritized 9-year-obligatory education by redistribution of students and teachers, improvement of teachers’ qualifications, upgrade of school facilities in accordance with MMS and improved efficiency of school budgets.
