Abstract

The selection process for competition participants in the Informatics Engineering Department at Gorontalo State University is still carried out manually, potentially leading to subjectivity and suboptimal identification of deserving students. This study developed an artificial intelligence-based selection system using a Large Language Model (LLM) integrated with the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) approach. The developed system, named Scout, recommends competitions that match student profiles based on academic data, interests, experience, and achievements. The system evaluation used the Precision@K and Hit@K metrics to measure recommendation accuracy, and RAGAS to assess the quality of retrieval and chatbot responses. Test results showed that the Scout system obtained a Precision@3 score of 0.87 and a Faithfulness score of 0.91, indicating high recommendation relevance and factual consistency. Thus, the implementation of LLM and RAG has proven effective in increasing the objectivity and efficiency of the selection process and has the potential to become the basis for the development of an AI-based academic decision support system in higher education

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology requires English language instruction in vocational higher education to align with professional communication demands while addressing the characteristics of learners as users of digital learning media. However, the English Grammar teaching materials, particularly those covering verb tenses, used in the Applied Bachelor's Program in Software Engineering Technology at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo have not fully accommodated these two aspects. This study aimed to analyze learning needs by identifying target needs and learning needs from the perspective of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), together with user needs from the User-Centered Design (UCD) perspective, as the basis for developing a Design Requirements Specification for a digital English Grammar module. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with needs analysis serving as the analytical framework integrating ESP and UCD perspectives. Data were collected from 29 first-year students through questionnaires, diagnostic assessments, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, interactive analysis, source triangulation, and requirements analysis and synthesis. The findings indicate that although students recognize the importance of verb tenses in software engineering communication, they continue to experience substantial competency gaps, particularly in the use of perfect tenses. Students also expressed the need for a digital learning module that is contextualized, interactive, supported by concept visualizations, provides immediate feedback, and is accessible via mobile devices. Integrating the findings from the ESP and UCD perspectives resulted in a Design Requirements Specification encompassing content, context, instructional, interface, interaction, and platform specifications, which serves as a conceptual foundation for the design and development of a digital English Grammar module in subsequent research.

Abstract

Abstract

The Informatics Engineering Department at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo (UNG) does not yet have an integrated management information system at the department level, so students, lecturers, and administrative staff must navigate separate platforms, such as SIAT/SIAKAD and SISKP, to meet their daily academic and administrative needs. This fragmentation (data silos) leads to inefficiency and low user satisfaction, yet no user-centered interface currently unifies these services at the department level. This study therefore aims to design a user interface (UI/UX) for a department-level Management Information System (SIM) using a Design Thinking approach, and to quantitatively evaluate its usability and user experience quality. Design Thinking was applied through five stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. User needs were identified through user journey observations and in-depth interviews, and were then synthesized into Empathy Maps, Affinity Diagrams, and User Personas for three primary user groups: students, lecturers, and administrative staff. The Ideate stage produced an information architecture, user flows, and wireframes, which were subsequently developed into a high-fidelity interactive prototype in Figma. Design feasibility was evaluated with 30 respondents using the System Usability Scale (SUS) and the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ). The prototype obtained an average SUS score of 83.67, classified as Acceptable (Grade B) with a "Good" rating, and an "Excellent" rating on all six UEQ scales: Stimulation (2.583), Attractiveness (2.572), Efficiency (2.525), Accuracy (2.525), Clarity (2.400), and Novelty (2.342), placing it in the top 10% of 468 digital products in the international UEQ benchmark database. The study's output is a validated high-fidelity interactive prototype covering 11 user flows for three primary user roles, providing a ready-to-use technical blueprint for the department's full system development.

Abstract

This study analyzes the quality of spoken English discourse in tourism promotion videos produced by students of the Tourism Department at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Using a descriptive qualitative case study, the research applies systemic functional linguistics to examine ideational, interpersonal, and textual aspects, along with a phonological analysis to assess pronunciation. Data was taken from 13 student videos, transcribed and analyzed qualitatively. The findings show that while students can convey basic information, there are wide variations in language quality. Students mainly relied on relational processes and descriptive adjectives to represent destinations but demonstrated limited syntactic variation. Interpersonal interaction was often restricted to the opening, with weak calls to action at the closing. Phonological analysis revealed systematic errors influenced by the mother tongue, such as flat intonation, misplaced stress, and inaccurate vowel and consonant sounds, which affected clarity. The study concludes that professional communication competence requires a stronger understanding of language functions and significant improvement in phonology. Recommendations include developing assessment rubrics and targeted learning strategies to enhance students’ communicative skills.
