Abstract

English plays a crucial role as a global language that needs to be learned from an early age, as it opens up global opportunities and enhances cross-cultural communication. However, children in the Tamo Dhua area face challenges in learning English due to a lack of access to engaging and effective materials. This activity aims to optimize children's understanding of English through the use of visually appealing infographics. Infographics are used to simplify information and make learning more interactive. The methods applied include material development, infographic creation, and classroom implementation. Observation and evaluation results show that infographics help children better understand basic English vocabulary and increase their engagement in learning. The children showed improvement in remembering and using English words and actively participating in activities.

Abstract

This study explores how family socioeconomic status (SES) affects parental involvement in children's education in Indonesia, specifically within home and school environments. Although parental involvement is essential for academic success, differences across SES groups in Indonesia are not yet fully understood. Using data from 160 families representing diverse SES backgrounds, this research employed t-tests and correlational analyses to examine the influence of SES on parental involvement. Results show that families with higher SES exhibit greater involvement in home-based educational activities, while involvement at school remains consistent across different SES levels. Additionally, notable gender differences emerged: mothers from high-SES families were significantly more involved compared to mothers from low-SES families, whereas fathers' involvement did not significantly differ based on SES. Correlational analyses further demonstrated that SES indicators, particularly parental education levels, were strongly associated with home-based involvement but had little relation to school-based involvement. Regression analysis confirmed that SES significantly predicts home involvement but not involvement at school. These findings underscore the importance of providing targeted support to promote home-based parental involvement among low-SES families. Future research should investigate qualitative factors, such as school policies and cultural norms, to better understand their impact on parental involvement.

Abstract

The Bugis language, belonging to the Austronesian family, serves as a crucial element of cultural identity and heritage for the Bugis ethnic group in Indonesia, particularly in Sinjai City. However, like many indigenous languages, Bugis faces challenges in preservation due to socio-cultural factors. This research delves into preservation efforts and sociolinguistic dynamics surrounding the Bugis language since 2000, aiming to provide insights for stakeholders. Drawing on qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews and ethnographic observations, this study aims to explore the motivations driving preservation efforts, investigate the role of education, examine socio-cultural factors influencing language use, and assess the effectiveness of existing preservation strategies. Findings reveal that cultural identity maintenance, intergenerational transmission, and the desire to safeguard linguistic diversity are primary motivations. Education emerges as pivotal, though hindered by the dominance of Bahasa Indonesia and limited institutional support. Socio-cultural factors like urbanization, migration, media influence, and linguistic stigma further challenge preservation. Strengths of current strategies include community engagement and cultural affirmation, while limitations include lack of support and linguistic stigma. Recommendations for augmenting preservation efforts include advocating for policy reforms, community empowerment, digital resources, and promoting multilingualism. Ultimately, preserving the Bugis language entails a holistic approach that honors cultural diversity and empowers the Bugis community.

Abstract

Abstract This research investigates the themes of artificiality and social alienation in Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey and Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South, examining how urban settings in Bath and Milton encapsulate the social complexities of Victorian society during the Industrial Revolution. Employing a comparative literary analysis, grounded in urban and social theory as articulated by experts such as Simmel and Parkins, this study highlights how city spaces both reflect and reinforce societal constraints and individual behaviours. Data was gathered through close readings of the primary texts, supported by secondary sources, and analysed to explore patterns of social interaction and urban influence on character development. The findings reveal how Bath’s societal superficiality shapes Catherine Morland’s experience, while Milton’s industrial harshness impacts characters like Margaret Hale and Mr. Thornton, illustrating the varied ways urban settings foster artificiality and exacerbate social divides. This research contributes to understanding Victorian literature's critique of societal structures, emphasizing the value of authenticity and human connection amid social pressures.

Abstract

Second language acquisition (SLA) research has extensively examined language learning in formal, often monolingual, classroom settings, there is a noticeable lack of empirical investigation into how polyglots acquire, manage, and sustain multiple languages. This gap is particularly significant given the rising importance of multilingualism in a globalized world and the proven cognitive, cultural, and professional benefits it offers. This qualitative case study examines the language learning strategies of Indonesian polyglot proficient in seven languages: Indonesian, English, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, and Latin. Through a purposive sampling method, the participant was interviewed via Zoom, and data were analysed using Oxford’s (1990) taxonomy of language learning strategies. The study identified both direct strategies (memory, cognitive, compensation) and indirect strategies (metacognitive, affective, social) used by the participant. Findings reveal that the participant’s language proficiency is achieved through a strategic integration of diverse methods tailored to specific goals and contexts. Motivation driven by extrinsic factors like scholarships, personal interests, and intrinsic spiritual reasons played an important part of learning a language intensity. The participant preferred structured tools, analytical comparisons, and regular practice, while affective and social strategies helped manage emotional challenges and maintain motivation. This study supports Oxford’s framework and highlights the importance of clear goals, sustained motivation, and community engagement in successful multilingual acquisition.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of digital media, particularly AI Fully-Fluent and Instagram, on enhancing Speaking skills for tourism in the English Education program at Universitas Sulawesi Barat. Recognizing the crucial role of English proficiency in maximizing tourism potential, especially in culturally rich regions like Majene, this research addresses the need to improve human resource competencies. The study employs descriptive quantitative approach from applied linguistic perspective, with a sample of 25 students selected through convenience sampling. Data collection involved tests to assess the improvement in Speaking ability after the application of digital media, paired sample t-test with SPSS was utilized in data analysis. Findings reveal positive impact of digital media, with a two-tailed significance value of less than 0.05. Comprehension showed highest improvement, followed by pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. Interactive features of AI Fully-Fluent and Instagram provide a supportive environment for students to practice English, build confidence, and engage in meaningful language use, aligning with interactionist theory in linguistics, which emphasizes the importance of interaction, feedback, and practice in linguistic acquisition. The study offers insightful perspective into the role of digital media in enhancing language learning and tourism, with implications for developing human resources and promoting Majene as tourist destination.

Abstract

This study explores the English language learning experiences of high school students in a rural school in West Sulawesi, Indonesia, through the Capability Approach. English proficiency is vital for national development, yet students in remote areas face numerous barriers that hinder their ability to learn the language, exacerbating social inequalities. This research fills a gap in understanding how these challenges affect students' educational outcomes in underprivileged regions. Through interviews and field observations, the study reveals the significant influence of socio-economic and environmental factors on students' abilities to engage with and benefit from English instruction in rural West Sulawesi. The findings indicate that students with limited resources are disproportionately affected, significantly constraining their ability to develop essential language skills. Furthermore, the study underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions, such as improved teaching quality and increased support for rural students, to address these inequalities. By promoting educational equity and bridging the gap between urban and rural English language education, these interventions can create more equal opportunities for students, fostering broader national development.
