Abstract

This review article is written to provide information to readers regarding the potential of quail as a genetic resource of poultry for poultry-based food production. Quail was first domesticated in Japan and has strong potential for development as both a meat and egg producer. This species is known for its high feed efficiency in meat production, characterized by a high carcass yield, dominant meat deposition in the breast and thigh, and a superior meat-to-bone ratio compared to native chickens and broilers. In addition, quail demonstrates egg production capabilities that are nearly comparable to those of commercial laying hens, although with slightly lower feed efficiency. Based on these characteristics, quail is worthy of consideration as a genetic resource of poultry that is efficient and economical in providing animal protein.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service was carried out to provide insight into the maggot production system to members of Gapoktannak Aneka Karya East Lombok. The activities were executed out in collaboration between the extension team from the Poultry Production Laboratory, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Mataram University and members of Gapoktannak Aneka Karya, East Lombok. Service activities use lecture methods, as well as discussions and questions and answers. Extension material includes the egg hatching system, maggot rearing, maggot harvesting, maggot nutritional value, and the benefits of maggots as a feed ingredient for poultry, fish and ruminants. The activity took place at the Gapoktannak Aneka Karya Meeting Hall in Mamben Daya village, Wanasaba, East Lombok from 14.00 central Indonesian time until finished. All series of community service works ran smoothly and all participants were actively involved. All participants who are members of Gapoktannak Aneka Karya appreciated activities due to they received additional knowledge about maggots, namely Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae which are rich in nutrients and potential feedstuff are used as feed for poultry, fish and ruminants. It is concluded that this service activity can provide new insights to participants about maggots, their benefits and rearing systems.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out with the aim of creating jobs for underprivileged communities in Beririjarak village, Wanasaba District, East Lombok. This activity was held in collaboration with the University of Mataram with the Indonesian Ulema Council of West Nusa Tenggara (MUI-NTB) with the Barokah Farmer Group of Beririjarak village. MUI acts as a provider of funds, while the Barokah farmer group acts as a beneficiary, while the team from Mataram University acted as technical and business advisors. The activity began with focus group discussion (FGD), group formation and program preparation. The results of the FGD were stated in the form of a letter of understanding signed jointly by the chairman of MUI-NTB with the Chairman of the Barokah Beririjarak Farmer Group, and witnessed by several MUI-NTB employees, located at the MUI-NTB office, Pejanggik street Mataram. In the meeting, a livestock handover ceremony was also held by the chairman of MUI-NTB to the head of the Barokah farmer group, Beririjarak village, East Lombok. The purchase of livestock is carried out using two methods, namely direct purchases made by MUI-NTB officials. The second method is that the purchase of livestock is handed over to thefarmer, and if they can buy it at a lower price than the agreed benchmark price, the excess money can be used to pay for the repair of cages and other production facilities. The first evaluation result at the Barokah Farmer Group's business location was to stand a simple pen unit filled with 10 heifers, with 4 of them pregnant. In this way, the purpose of activities to create jobs for underprivileged communities can be achieved.

Abstract

The turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is a large poultry species with unique phenotypic diversity, exotic characteristics, and distinctive meat flavor. Globally, it has been recognized as an important source of high-quality animal protein with relatively lowfat content. In Indonesia, turkey farming remains underdeveloped despite its considerable potential as an alternative meat source. This study is a literature review that synthesizes scientific findings from various references related to the domestication, distribution, and meat production potential of turkeys. Domestic turkeys are descendants of the wild turkey (M. gallopavo gallopavo), first domesticated in Central Mexico and parts of the United States. From there, domesticated stocks were introduced to Europe via Spanish colonial routes and subsequently spread worldwide. In Indonesia, turkeys have shown promising adaptability and potential for meat production. However, their development is hindered by limited access to high-quality breeding stocks, both in terms of quantity and genetic improvement. Turkeys possess significant potential to serve as an alternative poultry species for meat production in Indonesia. Addressing constraints in breeding stock availability and improving genetic resources are essential steps toward optimizing their productivity and sustainability.
