Abstract

Abstract

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains a major global health and economic burden. In Indonesia, North Kalimantan reports the highest prevalence of heart disease (2.2%), exceeding the national average of 1.5%. Nunukan, the province’s northernmost and predominantly archipelagic region, is served by a single general hospital, reflecting the healthcare challenges faced by many rural Indonesian areas. This study aimed to provide epidemiological insights into ACS cases in this region to inform improved management strategies in similar resource-limited settings. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among ACS patients admitted to Nunukan Regency General Hospital, Nunukan, Indonesia, between January 1 and August 31, 2023. Data on demographics, risk factors, clinical presentation, vital signs, diagnostic findings, treatments, and outcomes were collected from paper-based medical records. Of the 241 patients admitted, 4.56% were diagnosed with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), 35.68% with very high-risk non-ST-elevation ACS (VHR NSTE-ACS), and 59.75% with non-very high-risk NSTE-ACS (NVHR NSTE-ACS). The mean age was 55.4±12.26 years, with a predominance of males (51.5%) and obesity (35.7%). The median number of risk factors was 2 (IQR: 1–2.5), with hypertension being the most prevalent (72.6%). Late presentation was common, and only 36.4% of STEMI patients received fibrinolytic therapy. The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 3.3%, and the median length of stay was 6 days (IQR: 5–7). ACS patients in Nunukan exhibited distinct clinical and demographic profiles, characterized by younger age, obesity, multiple risk factors, and delayed presentation. These findings highlight the urgent need to strengthen cardiovascular care capacity and early intervention strategies in remote and resource-limited regions of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of code-switching in English language learning in the English Language Education Department of Muhammadiyah University of Bone. Code-switching occurs naturally in interactions between lecturers and students in a multilingual context using English, Indonesian, and Buginese. This phenomenon is understood as a communication strategy that plays an important role in supporting material understanding and a smooth learning process. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques in the form of classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The results show that the dominant forms of code-switching are intrasentential and intersentential switching. Code-switching functions pedagogically to explain complex concepts and reduce language anxiety, and socially to build familiarity and affirm cultural identity, thus contributing positively to the English language learning process.

Abstract

As an extraordinary crime, and which can damage the state system, and can endanger the survival and life of the community. Corruption is a complex phenomenon that has a number of causative factors, as reported by the  KPK website there are two factors that cause corruption crimes, namely, internal and external factors. Internal factors are factors that come from oneself. While external factors are factors that come from outside oneself. The rampant criminal act of corruption, with the weak laws and regulations, so that it becomes an entrance for corrupt perpetrators to launch their actions by committing corruption crimes in the country. Even though many efforts have been made by the state, corruption is still increasing both in terms of the quantity of cases and even the quality of corruption crimes that occur tend to be more systematic, more widespread in almost all aspects of people's lives. Departing from the rampant crime of corruption, it is time for the government and law enforcement officials to examine other sources and legal systems in the current national legal system. This research is a normative research that examines the system and sources of law in Islamic law, as a step to realize a corruption-free Indonesia, using the principles of Islamic criminal law.  There are many references that can be used as a reference in efforts to enforce Islamic criminal law in this country, including the prohibition of accepting bribes (riswah), the example of leaders, and the law that is commensurate and mutually supportive and reminding the leaders of the state and the community.

Abstract

Lung disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the community, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and lung disorders caused by exposure to air pollution and smoking. Most lung diseases develop slowly and often go undetected in the early stages because symptoms are still mild. Early screening through spirometry is a simple, non-invasive, and effective method for detecting impaired lung function early. This Community Service activity aims to conduct early screening for lung disease through spirometry and raise public awareness of the importance of lung health. Implementation methods include lung health education, spirometry examinations, interpretation of results, and health counseling. The activity results showed the detection of impaired lung function in some participants and increased public knowledge and awareness about early detection of lung disease. Spirometry screening is expected to be a preventive measure in reducing the burden of lung disease in the community.

Abstract

Post-harvest corn residues in rural areas are often underutilized, creating environmental burdens while leaving economic potential untapped. This community service program aimed to strengthen the technical, managerial, and marketing capacities of the Pationgi Village community through a desapreneur model based on corn-waste valorization under the zero-waste principle. Key problems faced by partners included low utilization of corn residues, limited access to appropriate technology, and weak skills in processing and marketing value-added products. The program was implemented from September to November 2025 through socialization, intensive training, tool demonstrations, and structured mentoring for two partner groups: the Madeceng Farmers Group and the Makkiade Youth Organization. Three appropriate technologies were introduced and applied, namely PIPILLER, EXTRAFEED, and PIROLIN. The results showed that shelling capacity increased from 80–120 kg/day to 350–480 kg/day, while kernel damage decreased from 15–20% to <5%, accompanied by a reported 12–15% increase in selling value. Partners were also able to produce 150 kg of fermented feed per production session (monthly output ≥150 kg) and generate 10–15 kg of biochar and 3–5 liters of liquid smoke per ±3-hour pyrolysis cycle. Product diversification by the youth group resulted in 10 boxes of corn-silk tea, 20 corn-husk flower crafts, and 5 village-based handicrafts. Evaluation indicated highly positive responses, with all indicators falling within the “agree–strongly agree” categories, although improvement is still needed in tool-component literacy and product packaging. Overall, the program demonstrates that integrating appropriate technology with participatory mentoring can transform corn waste into value-added products and support sustainable rural economic opportunities

Abstract

Unsold vegetable waste from agricultural products generally rots and ends up in landfills, increasing waste volume and creating environmental problems. Utilizing vegetable waste as a raw material for bioethanol is a potential alternative, considering that bioethanol is a renewable energy source that can be produced through a biomass fermentation process. This study designed a 15 liter bioethanol production unit utilizing various types of vegetable waste, such as potatoes, pineapples, carrots, mustard greens, and cabbage. The process unit consists of pre-treatment equipment (a pre-cooking tank, a crusher, and a pressure tank), a fermenter equipped with two 30 cm diameter paddle-type manual stirrers, and a stainless steel distillation unit equipped with a heater and cooling tank. The fermentation process lasts for 48–72 hours and produces bioethanol with a concentration of 45%. This program is expected to provide dual benefits: as a solution for vegetable waste management to reduce environmental impacts and as a source of additional income for the community through the utilization of the bioethanol produced.
