Abstract

Reading ability is one of the fundamental skills that supports students' academic success, especially in the early years of primary education. However, many first-grade students still face challenges in acquiring sufficient reading proficiency. This study aims to develop an educational game-based learning media using Karuta to improve the early reading skills of first-grade primary school students. The research employed the Research and Development (RD) approach with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. The media was validated by media and content experts and tested in a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 26 students. Validation results showed that the Karuta media was highly valid, with scores of 86.6% from media experts and 97.6% from content experts. The t-test analysis indicated a significant improvement in students' early reading skills after using the media (p = 0.000 0.05). Furthermore, students gave highly positive responses (99.4%) regarding the media’s attractiveness, ease of use, and usefulness in supporting reading. These findings suggest that Karuta-based learning media is not only feasible but also effective and engaging in helping young learners develop foundational reading skills. It can serve as an innovative and interactive alternative for teachers in early grade classrooms to foster students' interest and achievement in reading.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the needs for developing a Balanced Literacy Approach (BLA) model to improve beginning reading instruction in elementary schools. The research was conducted in three public elementary schools in Sentolo District, Kulon Progo, involving 15 lower-grade teachers, Grade II students, and instructional documents used in the schools. Using a descriptive method within the preliminary phase of the Borg & Gall R&D model, data were collected through document analysis, classroom observations, teacher questionnaires, interviews, and an early reading test. The findings indicate that instructional documents were still general in nature and not tailored to the specific needs of early literacy development. Classroom practices were dominated by lecture-based activities and round-robin reading, with limited use of shared reading, guided reading, or independent reading. Teachers reported challenges in guiding students to understand texts and identified the lack of engaging reading materials such as Big Books. Students showed low reading interest, and test results revealed disparities between technical decoding skills and reading comprehension. These results highlight the urgent need for a structured, engaging, and applicable instructional model. The Balanced Literacy Approach is considered relevant to provide systematic, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate reading experiences for early grade learners.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Somatic, Auditory, Visual, Intellectual (SAVI) learning method in enhancing the poetry reading skills of fifth-grade elementary school students. Employing a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design, the research involved 36 fifth-grade students from Muhammadiyah Condongcatur Elementary School. Data were collected through structured observation sheets and analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The results indicate a statistically significant improvement in students' poetry reading skills following the intervention, with a significance value of 0.001 (< 0.05). The mean score increased by 30.72 points from pretest to posttest, demonstrating a substantial gain in performance. These findings lead to the conclusion that the SAVI method is an effective instructional strategy for significantly improving poetry reading proficiency in the target student population.

Abstract

LMS emerged as a response to the development of information technology and the need to simplify and improve education management. Digital technology in learning refers to using digital tools and systems that facilitate a more interactive and dynamic learning process. The development model used in this study is the ADDIE model The Undergraduate Program in Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD), Faculty of Education, Yogyakarta State University (FIP UNY), was the subject of this research. The determination of research subjects was carried out purposively. The product trials in this study were conducted in two stages: the main trial, involving 50 trial subjects from undergraduate PGSD students at FIP UNY, and the operational field trial, also involving 100 trial subjects from undergraduate PGSD students at FIP UNY. The developed product underwent validation by subject matter experts and design experts. The obtained data were processed using descriptive percentage techniques and then converted into quantitative descriptive data.. The results of the design expert validation of nine aspects of the interface, user media, navigation, interactivity, feedback, affective considerations, robustness, invisible features, and help and support showed an average score of 3.87 within the range of 3.41 - 4.00, which, according to the assessment criteria, is included in the "Very Good" category. The results of the material validation showed an average score of 4.75 (Very Good category). The lecturer's practicality test produced an average score of 3.9 (Very Good category), indicating that this application is suitable for lecture use. The main trial with 50 students produced an average score of 3.94 (Very Good), and the field trial with 100 students recorded an average score of 3.95 (Very Good), so that the interactive LMS application based on the Litera-tech lecture model can be used to support lectures.

Abstract

Elementary school teachers in Kretek District, Bantul Regency, face various challenges in implementing the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach in Indonesian language learning, even though the Independent Curriculum emphasizes the importance of recognizing the diversity of individual student abilities. This community service activity aims to provide training to teachers on the TaRL concept and assist them in developing Indonesian language learning tools based on this approach. The activity was carried out through a series of stages, including workshops, mentoring, implementation, and evaluation involving elementary school teachers in Kretek District. Data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, questionnaires, and observations. The results of the activity showed an increase in teachers' understanding of the concept and application of TaRL, as indicated by an increase in the average score from 62.3 in the pre-test to 84.7 in the post-test. In addition, the teachers successfully developed TaRL-based learning modules and media. Based on the results of the evaluation questionnaire, 86% of participants stated that the training was very useful, 78% felt more confident in implementing TaRL in the classroom, and 72% hoped for further mentoring. Thus, this training has proven effective in improving elementary school teachers' competency in understanding and implementing the TaRL approach in Indonesian language learning and providing practical solutions to differences in student ability in the classroom.
