Abstract

Drinking water is both a basic human need and a strong determinant of health. In Indonesia, there are drinking water refill stations (DWRS) which conveniently offer refill drinking water at affordable price. This study aims to determine whether station management amd raw water source influence the quality of drinking water. This cross-sectional study used primary data from questionnaires filled by DWRS owners and secondary data about the quality of refill drinking water from the Surabaya City Health Department. Data was then analyzed by using Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney tests. From 33 registered DWRSs, only 18 stations fulfilled all quality standards of drinking water. Some DWRSs failed to pass microbiological (n=13) and chemical (n=2) standards. All DWRS passed the physical standard. There was no significant difference found in duration of operation (pmicro = 0.956, pchemical = 0.382), production capacity (pmicro = 0.384; pchemical = 0.495). There was no significant difference found in terms of station management and raw water sources on the quality of refill drinking water. Keywords: drinking water refill station (DWRS); duration of operation; production capacity; raw water source

Abstract

Background: Borax, a carcinogenic toxicant, is illegally used as food additives frequently. Previous researches shown that high dose of borax exposure (300 mg/kg of BW) caused gastric ulcer, but low dose of borax, as found as usual dose in food, has not been frequently researched. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of low dose of borax for 8 weeks on the formation of gastric ulcer. Materials and Methods: Twenty four young adult rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into 4 groups (Control, Group 1, 2, and 3). Borax doses of 50 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg, and 300 mg/kg were administered on groups 1, 2, and 3 respectively through sonde for 8 weeks; Control group was not exposed with borax. Body weight was monitored every 2 weeks. On the last day of the experiment, rats were euthanized and gastric ulcers were histopathologically analyzed using a microscope. The data were analyzed by the comparative test of Mann-Whitney and the significancy was set on p<0.050. Results: The results showed that body weight was significantly different on the 6th week between Control vs Group 1 (p=0.010) and Control vs Group 3 (p=0.043). The grade of gastric ulcer was found higher in Group 2 and Group 3 compared to Control (p=0.019 and 0.011 respectively). Conclusion: Both of low dose (150 mg/kg BW) and high dose (300mg/kg BW) of borax exposure for 8 weeks cause microscopic gastric ulcer on rats.

Abstract

The importance of maternal parenting to energy and protein intake in children in a low-income familyBackground: Energy and protein insufficiency was still a major problem for Indonesian children, especially for those who live in rural areas. Objective: This study aimed to find the important role of mothers on their children's intakes in low-income families in the village of Tasikmalaya, West Java. Methods: The study was an observational research with a cross-sectional design. 120 children (6 months to 5 years old) were randomly selected from the list of children in the area. Children's intake was measured using a 2x24 hour food recall questionnaire and food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Data were analyzed using correlation test (Spearman rho), and multiple linear regression test significance was set at p-value <0,005. Results: The majority of the children (83.3%) consumed less than four types of food (staple foods, side dishes, vegetables, and fruits), 58.3% ate the main menu <3 times/day, 13.3% of the children had low energy intake, and 7.5% had low protein intake. Although a majority of the children had normal nutritional status, 5.8% were categorized as wasting, and 2.5% overweight. There was a positive correlation between frequency of eating with energy and protein intakes of children (p=0.006; p=0.035). Types of food did not correlate to the energy and protein intakes of the children. Mother's education, children's age, and history of illness are factors that influence the energy and protein intake of the children. Conclusions: Maternal parenting (frequency of eating) correlated to the energy and protein intake of the children.
