Abstract

The Effects of I-bLA on Resolving the Issues of the EFL Students’ Writing Skills and Content Originality. Objective: This research aims at testing the effects of Inquiry-based Learning Approach (I-bLA) on Resolving the Issues of the EFL Students’ Writing Skills and Content Originality. Method: The one Group Pre-test and Post-test experimental research design was used to test the effects of I-bLA. Findings: The result of paired sample test explicates that the sig. 2-tailed value is 0.000 designating a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. Furthermore, the I-bLA significantly decreases the similarity index by 80% meaning that the content originality of the students’ essays does not match against the original sources. Conclusion: the use of I-bLA can significantly resolve the issues of the EFL students’ Writing Skills and Content Originality. Keywords: I-bLA, writing skills, content originality DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v11.i2.202106

Abstract

Freedom of Learning” is the MECRI Nadiem Makarims sensational policy. Its top goals are to provide students with freedom of thinking and urge teachers to shift their education paradigms from traditional to contemporary ones. However, the facts assume that such a policy is trumping up and secretly includes Indonesian education in a list of the secular capitalist-style curriculum. The facts seem biased and even counter-productive if they are left unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to diagnose the meaning of the policy in John Deweys pragmatic philosophy and its effects. This was qualitative research. Observation was a technique for collecting the data. Miles and Hubermans model was a technique for analyzing the data. Credibility and dependability were used to examine the validity of the data. The results showed that the implied meaning of Makarims freedom of learning policy is interpreted as a process of building students reality through interaction with their real life. Knowledge is based on students experiences and constructed using scientific methods. The teachers role is to develop the students critical and creative thinking skills through scientific process. The curriculum prepares students for changes, research and verification, and problem-solving activities. More importantly, the policy urges to bring the classes closer to digital technology and e-devices, arouses students global awareness and learning skills of the 7Cs X 3s + 1Is. In conclusion, the policy aims to advance the value and quality of education for Indonesian in the current era of digital technology. “Merdeka Belajar” adalah kebijakan sensasional Mentri Pendidikan R.I.

Abstract

Lack of engagement, weak critical thinking skills, disfluency, limited vocabulary, timidity, and a preference for individual learning often lead to inactive participation in English-speaking classes. This study investigated the qualitative impacts of the Modern Socratic Method (MSM) on Indonesian Polytechnic students’ active learning in an English-speaking course. Data were collected through complete participant observation and unstructured interviews, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Credibility and transferability procedures ensured trustworthiness. The study was conducted over two semesters at Padang State Polytechnic with 54 students from two classes. Before the intervention, Class A and Class B obtained mean speaking performance scores of 50 and 60, respectively, both categorized as low. After the MSM was implemented, the means increased substantially to 85 (Class A) and 88 (Class B). The improvement was linked to MSM’s emphasis on continuous questioning, interactive discussion, logical argumentation, risk-taking in expressing opinions, and peer collaboration. These activities enhanced students’ fluency, expanded their vocabulary, strengthened critical thinking, built self-confidence, and fostered collaborative learning. The findings suggest that MSM can reduce reliance on lecture-based instruction in polytechnic English classes and improve students’ self-efficacy in managing speaking anxiety. This method holds promise for broader application in higher education contexts where active participation is essential.

Abstract

This research presents an analysis of challenges and strategies in translating journalistic content, which demands accuracy, speed, and sensitivity to cultural context. Because of these characteristics, translating journalistic texts require different skills and approaches compared to other types of texts. Unlike translator-journalists who find journalistic texts as part of their daily work, freelance translators, who are generally more familiar with literary, legal, advertising and marketing, medical, and business texts often faces unique difficulties due to the concise and clear nature of journalistic writing. These challenges require careful attention to semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic elements to ensure that meaning is effectively conveyed to the target audience. The main objective of this study is to identify and analyze the specific challenges faced by freelance translator when translating journalistic content for the first time and to explore the strategies used to address them. The study also aims to provide insights that can contribute to a broader understanding of translation practices in a journalistic context. A single case study design is used by involving a single freelance translator with two years of experience in translating academic writings, literary works, and promotional texts. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006). The analysis revealed four key challenges: accuracy and readability, cultural nuance, bias and framing, and deadline pressures. To overcome these challenges, four main strategies are used: adaptation, localization, transcreation, and selective omission and addition. The findings reveal that freelance translators need a combination of linguistic skills, cultural sensitivity, and effective time management to produce credible, reliable, and accurate translations.
