Abstract

Several researches showed that students had difficulty in understanding the concept of Least Common Multiple (LCM) in Elementary School. This underlies the researcher to design a learning of LCM  using storytelling,  Legend Putri Dayang Merindu  (LPDM), which contains situational problem related to LCM. The purposes of this study are  to know  the role  of  LPDM in supporting students'  ability to understand LCM concept and  to generate a student  learning  trajectory in  learning of LCM  using LPDM.  This research  uses methodology of design research consists of three steps (i.e.  preliminary design, teaching experiment  and  retrospective analysis),  and the learning approach of realistic mathematics education, labeled by  PMRI  in Indonesia. From the research result conducted in MIN 1 Palembang can be concluded that the learning of LCM using LPDM has role in supporting students' ability to understand LCM concept. Therefore, student learning trajectory to understanding LCM concept is started from solving of situational problems based on LPDM until formal solution of LCM. In this case, there are three stages that students through (i.e. understanding concept of multiple, common multiple and LCM) using various strategies in the level situational, model of, model for and formal.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore students’ creative thinking process in fifth- grade elementary school in fraction problem solving based on gender differences. Subjects consisted of one male and one female with high mathematical ability. Data were collected by task-based interviews and analyzed through the sequence: data classification, data reduction, data presentation, interpretation, and conclusions. The creative thinking process in this research is a series of stages that students go through in creative thinking, including: exploring facts, identifying problems, generating ideas and completing ideas to produce solutions. By these stages, the subjects produced solutions in geometric and algebraic that showed their creative thinking that fulfilled fluency, flexibility and novelty. The subjects used algorithm solutions by repeating the completion steps. In this research, both subjects related their algebraic solutions with geometric solutions that has been produced. It was found that geometric solutions supported the subjects to deliver algebraic solutions and they related their understanding of fractions concepts to solve the problem. The more students’ knowledge or experiences associated with the problem, the more ideas for solutions they found. In this research, it was also found that there were some similarities and differences between the creative thinking processes of both subjects.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ experiences and perceptions of using manipulative media in learning whole-number addition and subtraction in elementary school. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving 15 second-grade students and one classroom teacher selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, open-ended questionnaires, and participant observation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the use of manipulative media enhances students’ conceptual understanding by transforming abstract mathematical concepts into concrete representations, while also increasing engagement, motivation, and self-confidence in learning mathematics. Most students expressed positive perceptions, indicating that manipulative media helped them visualize and understand mathematical operations more easily; however, some students experienced initial difficulties, highlighting the importance of teacher guidance. The study implies that manipulative media can be an effective instructional strategy to improve mathematics learning in elementary schools, although its effectiveness depends on proper implementation and teacher support. This study is limited by a small sample size and short duration; therefore, future research is recommended to involve larger and more diverse participants and longer observation periods to obtain more comprehensive findings.
