Abstract

Chiara Formichi and R. Michael Feener, eds. 2015. Shi‘ism in Southeast Asia: ‘Alid Piety and Sectarian Constructions. London: Hurst & Company.Sunni and Shi’i studies have thus far been conducted along existing sectarian lines. But this volume edited by Formichi and Feener is an attempt to depart from that long-lasting academic tradition. Assuming the continuous tradition of Hodgson’s ‘Alid loyalism, the book intends to develop the assessment and analysis of diverse elements of ‘Alid piety among Muslims in Southeast Asia. The use of ‘Alid piety as the conceptual framework is path-breaking work in the academic study of Southeast Asian Islam, because this concept transcends Sunni and Shi‘i sectarian identities. The book tries to trace the historical foundation of ‘Alid piety in Southeast Asia, its manifestation in literary legacies, its modalities and cultural expressions, and contemporary developments in the sectarian construction. However, it would have provided more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of elements of ‘Alid piety if certain aspects of popular Sufi and religious tradition, particularly the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, were included.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i3.3344

Abstract

Through religious activities in cyberspace, new media has become one of the enabling reasons for the emergence of female ulama. It has created a channel for them to exhibit their identity and compete as religious preachers. Numerous Islamic studies organizations and societies have developed on social media, along with religious leaders who use the platform to disseminate Islamic learning activities across various social media channels, increasingly highlighting the signals of religious populism. This study employs a quantitative approach to assess female ulama's acceptance of new media by distributing online questionnaires to Islamic University civitas academia. The research model comprises eleven potential relationship paths based on the Technology Acceptance Model theory. There haven't been many studies on the acceptance of technology in religious affairs in Indonesia. An important finding is that the respondents' social influence does not affect the use of new media to access the female ulama lecture. The popularity of female scholars in presenting religious messages through modern media is currently acceptable. This study concludes that even in a homogeneous atmosphere, the female ulama remains unpopular; this may be attributed to the female scholar's continued use of the traditional approach in her lectures. Based on the result, a modern approach to delivering a religious message is needed to solve the issue and improve da'wah's impact and a cyber fatwa by female ulama in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze the bourgeois religious lifestyle of celebrities' hijrah from the perspective of globalization by focusing on how imperialism influences this lifestyle and why it is in line with the global economy. The theory used is the globalization theory of Gill Branston and Roy Stafford. The qualitative research approach is based on online and printed literature from books, websites, journals, and relevant research results. After the data is collected, the data analysis uses the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display, interpretation, and conclusion. This study concludes that a bourgeois religious lifestyle is a form of Islamic identity for hijrah celebrities. The lifestyle displayed is bourgeois but does not leave Islam a symbol of Piety. The interpretation of the hijrah celebrity towards globalization is to construct it as a religious bourgeois identity. Cultural imperialism is a factor in forming the religious bourgeois lifestyle of celebrities who migrate in the identity displayed in the public space outside the network and in the public space in the network. The bourgeois religious lifestyle of hijrah celebrities can be in line with the interests of the global economy because they both need and complement each other.

Abstract

This study aims to interpret the news of religious moderation in Republika Online. The research data used is from the documentation of religious moderation news in Republika Online. The theory used is the framing of Robert N. Entman. The conclusion of the study is that the news of religious moderation in the Republika Online media is a text that has multiple interpretations. Overall, the framing built by the Republic of Indonesia Online is moderate and in line with moderate by developing tolerance and building nationalism. In the end, news of religious moderation in the Republika Online media is a text that has multiple interpretations. The news can be interpreted in different ways according to the different ideological contexts by each newsreader. Like the constructionist school of thought, there is no right or wrong in interpreting news texts, because news texts are subjective constructions of reality. Although subjective, Republika Online tries to build news framing more on nationalism. In the news of religious moderation related to Muslims, Republika Online develops a framing that does not only defend Muslims. As a national media, Republika Online tries to develop a framing that can be accepted by the wider community, both Muslim and non-Muslim communities.

Abstract

In Singapore, Islamic identity matters mainly because Muslims and Malays have special constitutional status. However, state policies seem to contradict the status while the community is still dealing with the problem of backwardness in educational and economic development. This article examines the profile and strategic role of two Islamic organizations, MUIS (Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore) and Pergas (Persatuan Ulama dan Guru-Guru Agama Islam Singapura, Singapore Islamic Scholars, and Religious Teachers Association), in accommodating the expression and reconstructing Singaporean Muslim identity. Through intensive library research and using an interdisciplinary approach from social constructivist and fiqh of minorities’ perspectives, this article found that both have played a very important role in the expression and construction of Singaporean Muslim identity. There have been dynamic contestation and cooperation between the state policies towards the Muslim community. However, the global effect of Islamist extremism and terrorism has united them in terms of religious thought, attitude, and the formulation of the ideal Singaporean Muslim identity. The changing process of their stances toward the government’s policies was effective due to the function of fiqh of minorities in contextualizing Islamic teachings in the context of Singapore as a secular state.

Abstract

Despite being banned by the government, HTI continues to struggle for Islamic caliphate as a clandestine movement. This study is aimed to explain factors resulting in the relatively successful penetration of caliphate ideology in a changing Malay society, as represented by Bangka Belitung Archipelagic Province. It employed a qualitative approach through the library study of both offline and online data sources in order to gain a holistic comprehension of HTI’s success. The research results elaborate HTI’s mobilization strategies as the internal factor and the context of changing Malay society and the dysfunction of moderate socio-religious organizations as the external factor contribute to HTI’s success in the changing society. Mobilization strategies comprising the intensive implementation of religious learning and preaching, publication, public demonstration, good relation and network with local important figures, and the competent use of communication and information technology become effective in the context of changing Malay society reconstructing identity and seeking solutions to its social and economic problems. In addition, the dysfunction of moderate socio-religious organizations producing a theological vacuum accentuates HTI’s relative victory. Thus, the performance of HTI depends on its internal capabilities and external context and the function of socio-religious organizations in society.

Abstract

Abstract This study discusses the acceptance of the use of e-learning and games in learning Arabic during the COVID-19 pandemic. Arabic learning experienced considerable challenges in learning before the pandemic and now with the pandemic, this process has even greater challenges which ultimately require an Arabic language learning method that adapts to the generation, situation and condition of the people who are experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic so that learning can still be carried out with good and fun outcomes. This research through its five hypotheses which are built based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory, shows that with the use of e-learning and games, a positive perception of convenience which then supports usefulness and ultimately affects the attitudes and behaviour of users in learning Arabic can be proven by the acceptance of the five the hypothesis. The consistent use of e-learning and games in learning, especially Arabic learning and the implementation of e-learning and games to support the curriculum are expected to improve student learning experiences for the better and also increase the actual use of both methods.

Abstract

This article examines mediatization and hypermediation in digital religion concerning contemporary Muslim religious practices, particularly in Indonesia, through social media. This study employed a qualitative approach through library study of offline and online sources. The findings reveal that mediatization has altered the way Indonesian Muslims understand and practice their religion. Social media facilitates virtual religious practices and creates a hybrid space between online and offline religious activities. Hypermediation, through platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp, strengthens individual religious identity and collectively reinforces religious communities. Social media also affects the structure of religious communities by challenging traditional authority through the emergence of popular religious figures in the virtual world. This article contributes significantly to understanding religious transformation in the digital age and is a foundation for further research. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding the social and cultural implications of integrating social media into Muslim religious practices in Indonesia. It highlights the complexity of the relationship between religion, technology, and identity in the current context of digital globalization

Abstract

Much research has been conducted on Sunni-Shia conflicts within the Muslim world. However, there is still limited research on integrating these two denominations. Conflict and integration, in theory, represent two distinct aspects of the same issue. This study aims to elucidate the process of Sunni-Shia integration in Indonesia and the factors contributing to it, employing a structural-functionalist perspective. Additionally, it seeks to assess the potential for such integration. Through intensive library research on offline and online sources, the article uncovers three forms of Sunni-Shia integration: peaceful coexistence, accommodation, and cooperation. These outcomes stem from six interrelated factors: inclusive theology, the role of moderate actors, collective ritual practice, ‘Alid piety, friendship and kinship, and social activity. These factors play important roles in shaping the prospects of Sunni-Shia integration in Indonesia. While the inclusive theology, as the first factor, is normative and may produce normative integration aligned with the prevailing norms, the others are more functional and may elicit functional integration emerging from the functions in the society.
