Abstract

The existing technologies have profoundly influenced technology integration in teaching activities. However, integrating technology into English Language teaching is not entirely smooth since the teachers are not skilled in combining technology with content and pedagogy knowledge simultaneously in the learning process. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate the level of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) mastery from junior high school EFL teachers in Pangkajene and Kepulauan Regency based on teachers' gender and school status. The quantitative study with a survey method addressed the research's aim. The research conducted in Pangkajene and Kepulauan Regency involved 104 junior high school EFL teachers as research respondents. The data of this study were collected from in-service EFL teachers in public and private junior high schools by distributing the questionnaire offline and online. Version 26 of SPSS was employed to analyze the data. The analysis of the data encompassed inferential and descriptive statistics. The present study results elucidated that EFL teachers' TPACK mastery is in the very good category, with details of TK, TCK, PCK, and TPK in the very good category; CK and TPACK in the good category. Next, EFL teachers' TPACK mastery based on gender showed no significant difference in TPACK mastery between male and female teachers. Then, EFL teachers’ TPACK mastery based on school status showed no significant difference in TPACK mastery between teachers in public schools and private schools. These results imply that EFL teachers' TPACK knowledge and mastery are related to the proper implementation of ICT in classroom instruction.

Abstract

Increasing motivation is necessary for students in learning English vocabulary. The higher motivation the students gain, the bigger success they achieve in mastering vocabulary. However, most students in senior high schools have less motivation in learning vocabulary, especially in memorizing them. Thus, the teachers need to discover appropriate media for increasing their motivation. Some applications can be used through the smartphone as the need for vocabulary learning. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of using Quizlet Application as the media for increasing the students’ motivation in learning vocabulary. Nonequivalent control group design was used in this research. The participants were 65 students who were divided into the experimental and the control groups. The students’ motivation was observed during the process of vocabulary learning by using the observation checklist. In processing the data, the Wilcoxon test was used. The results show the use of Quizlet Application is effective to increase the students’ motivation in learning vocabulary. Students felt more enthusiastic, did not get bored easily, and thus showed high interest when learning vocabulary via the app. They also did the tasks provided in that application independently.

Abstract

This article first presents the Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG), developed by Halliday (1985, 1994) and Halliday andMatthiessen (2003), one grammar that can be used in languageanalysis. Then it describes briefly the use of the Systemic Coder (SC),a computational tool developed by O'Donnell (1994) that is especiallybeneficial for linguists to employ in language analysis based on SFGwhen they have to deal with huge corpora and need quick resultsas it facilitates getting comprehensive data characteristics in arelatively short time. SC is applicable in Indonesia as its platform isthe commonly used MSWord and it can be utilized in analyzing anylanguage employing the Latin alphabet. Abstract

Numerous studies have primarily focused on investigating the linguistic structures of academic writing, such as theses, dissertations, and articles from reputable journals authored by individuals ranging from novices to experts. However, few studies have examined the linguistic structures of texts written by AI, particularly those produced by ChatGPT. This study aims to analyze the lexical bundle structure and function variations of 10 argumentative essays generated by ChatGPT, which were composed based on prompts provided by advanced learners in Indonesia, specifically graduate students of applied linguistics from Yogyakarta University. The objective is to explore the lexical bundle structure and function of ChatGPT-generated essays to understand how the AI employs various linguistic forms and constructs relationships between sentences. For data collection, this study utilized the corpus tool AntConc's N-gram feature to refine the four-word lexical bundles from the collected essays. The analysis used the frameworks of Hyland (2008b) and Biber et al. (1999). The result showed the Noun Phrase + pattern as the most frequent lexical bundle structure found in ChatGPT-generated essays. This structure has been used primarily to assert ideas and positions on the discussed topics (Stance Features), marking that ChatGPT has a strong ability in presenting and elaborating ideas. However, the least frequently found lexical bundle function is text construction that can link one idea to others to create the connection. Therefore, this study suggested that ChatGPT-generated essays can assist in effectively conveying the writer's perspectives but need attention or development in creating cohesive links between ideas in written discourse.

Abstract

A look at Language Learning Strategies of Indonesian High School Students as Foreign Language Learners. Objective: This study analyzed Indonesian high school student’s choice of language learning strategies as EFL users, predominantly determining the most frequently used strategies. By understanding learning strategies, it can help EFL students to accelerate their language learning. Methods: One hundred and forty Darul Hasan high school students of Padangsidimpuan participated in this survey. All grades from 2020/2021 participated in this survey study. The Oxford’s strategy inventory for language learning (SILL) translated version was implemented to decide their learning strategies. Findings: The result showed that the students are medium strategy users. The affective strategy was found to be the most dominant strategy used by the students. The students do not seem aware that learning strategies were a part of their learning process. Conclusion: The students and teachers need to improve the learning language strategy for a better learning process.Keywords: language learning strategy, Oxford’s strategy inventory for language learning, survey method. DOI: 10.23960/jpp.v11.i2.202114

Abstract

The research is aimed to investigate teachers' implementation of guided reading strategy on grade 2 students in Sekolah Pilar Indonesia. The objectives of the research are (1) to understand how teachers view guided reading as a teaching strategy to develop students' reading comprehension; (2) to describe guided reading strategy implementation which is intended to support grade 2 students' reading comprehension; and (3) to evaluate the learning outcome of guided reading strategy on grade 2 students' reading comprehension. To gain the objectives, the research applied the qualitative case study method. The research subjects comprised four grade-2 teachers and twenty-seven grade-2 students in Sekolah Pilar Indonesia. The data were collected through teacher surveys, in-depth interviews, class observations, and document collection of students' reading assessment records. This research reveals five findings. First, all grade-2 teachers view guided reading as a strategy that can answer inquiries about how to deal with students' different levels of reading and as a context in which students are able to achieve comprehensive reading behaviours. Second, teachers are prepared to implement a guided reading strategy because the essential elements are administered well. Third, the seven essential elements of the guided reading strategy are effective to teach students reading. Fourth, the characteristics often indicators of teacher-self assessment in implementing guided reading strategy are necessarily managed to create an effective guided reading class. Fifth, the learning outcome related to students' reading comprehension shows a significant result.

Abstract

This research study aimed to (1) develop multimedia for reading instruction for the ninth-grade students at SMP N 1 Kalasan, and (2) find out the quality of multimedia for reading instruction for the ninth-grade students at SMP N 1 Kalasan. This research study applied research and development adapted from Lee & Owens (2004). The development of multimedia in this study was conducted in four stages: analysis, design, development, and evaluation and revision. Data were obtained through questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics. The findings showed that the quality of the developed multimedia for reading instruction for the ninth-grade students at SMP N 1 Kalasan was "good" in terms of instructional and material aspects (with average scores 4.17 and 4.10) respectively, and "excellent" in terms of media aspect (average score 4.23). In terms of those three aspects, the developed multimedia was categorized as "good" with an average score of 4.16.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to identify the target needs, describe the learning needs and describe the appropriate culture-based material with Integrated Performance Assessment for the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Muntilan. This study was classified as research and development (R&D). The study procedure was adapted from ADDIE models proposed by Branch (2009). The data were collected through questionnaires (need analysis questionnaire, expert judgment rating scale, interview transcripts, and questionnaire for students about the materials). The data from the needs analysis, the expert judgment questionnaire, and the questionnaire for students about the materials were analyzed quantitatively using frequency and percentage. Meanwhile, the data from the interview were analyzed using descriptive. The materials in the developed materials were developed based on Curriculum 2013. The research findings showed that the developed materials was considered appropriate. The result of the materials evaluation questionnaire was 3.81 which categorized as very good.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan peran guru Bahasa Indonesia sebagai teladan dalam menanamkan nilai-nilai karakter serta membangun budaya literasi yang berkelanjutan di kelas. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh temuan bahwa meskipun literasi merupakan kompetensi penting, masih terdapat kesenjangan antara kemampuan literasi siswa dan praktik pembelajaran, khususnya pada jenjang sekolah menengah. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan studi kasus kualitatif dengan melibatkan guru dan siswa sebagai partisipan. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi kelas, dan analisis dokumen yang mencakup modul ajar, catatan observasi, dan karya literasi siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru yang secara konsisten menjadi teladan memberikan pengaruh positif terhadap sikap dan perilaku siswa dalam mengembangkan nilai kejujuran, kedisiplinan, dan tanggung jawab. Selain itu, guru yang mengintegrasikan kegiatan membaca, menulis, dan diskusi secara aktif mampu menumbuhkan budaya literasi yang berkelanjutan. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa pengembangan karakter dan literasi tidak dapat dipisahkan dari keteladanan guru.
