Abstract

English communication skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. However, in many students' minds communication means only interaction between the speaker and the listener. Teaching English at maritime universities and nautical colleges involves not only teaching the language and the sea-related terminology but also making the students aware of the cross-cultural issues and problems that they may encounter in their work onboard ships. The best way of teaching is, how the teacher, instructor, and lecturer can choose and use the right teaching method. FAIES is one of the unique and well-known methods in teaching which can adapt to many situations in the classroom and makes the students feel easy to understand and study comfortably during the lesson especially in speaking English. According to Freud in Wollheim (1981), FAIES (First Aid in English System) is the teaching method to emphasize or stress communication, which consists of a directional approach, functional approach, situational approach, and drilling technique. Maritime English is largely restricted to IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases, which build basic knowledge of English and had been drafted in a simplified version of maritime English. In terms of maritime education, the current simulator-based studies can be divided into two areas: marine engineering and nautical science. In particular, human factor specialists work in these two fields addressing issues concerning the relationship between humans and technology, such as simulators (Lützhöft et al. 2017). A multitude of new methodologies has been explored and discussed in recent years in an attempt to approach the training and testing of the proficiency of maritime English that meets the international standards laid out in STCW.

Abstract

Pengabdian Masyarakat Politeknik Pelayaran Sulawesi Utara kepada masyarakat Desa Babang dilatarbelakangi oleh tanggungjawab pelaksanaan Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi dan masih rendahnya pemahaman masyarakat terhadap dasar-dasar keselamatan saat berada di atas kapal laut, khususnya kapal laut yang mengangkut penumpang dari dan antar pulau yang ada di provinsi Maluku Utara dan sekitarnya. Kegiatan dilaksanakan pada bulan Mei tahun 2023. Tujuan dari pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah tercapainya target program kerja pengabdian masyarakat dan meningkatnya pengetahuan masyarakat tentang diklat dasar keselamatan dan kesigapan bencana di atas kapal. Metode yang digunakan adalah penyuluhan dan pelatihan dengan pengambilan angket sebagai validasi data kegiatan.. Hasil dan kesimpulan yang didapat adalah 90% masyarakat memahami dasar-dasar keselamatan di atas kapal serta menginginkan kegiatan serupa dilaksanakan kembali.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbahasa asing telah menjadi salah satu syarat mutlak dalam dunia kerja sektor maritim, dimana setiap perwira diatas kapal laut dapat menggunakan dan memahami informasi dan pesan yang dikirim atau diterima saat berada pada alur pelayaran internasional. Aspek komunikasi juga menjadi salah satu faktor penting dalam penilaian kompetensi peserta didik pada setiap jenjang pendidikan. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi masih banyaknya taruna pelayaran memiliki kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris yang masih rendah sehingga berdampak pada rendahnya minat perusahaan pelayaran khususnya perusahaan pelayaran luar negeri untuk merekrut taruna lulusan politeknik pelayaran untuk magang (praktek laut) dan bekerja di kapal-kapal laut milik mereka. Artikel ini mereview faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi kemampuan berbicara bahasa inggris taruna pelayaran yaitu: penguasaan kosakata, kompetensi pengajar, dan motivasi belajar taruna suatu studi literatur pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Tujuan penulisan artikel ini guna membangun hipotesis pengaruh antar variabel untuk digunakan pada riset selanjutnya. Metode penelitian yang dipakai adalah kajian pustaka berupa (library research) dan review artikel ilmiah baik dari buku, hasil penelitian terdahulu yang relevan dan jurnal ilmiah. Hasil artikel literature review ini adalah: 1) Penguasaan Kosakata berpengaruh terhadap kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris Taruna; 2) Kompetensi Pengajar berpengaruh terhadap Kemampuan Berbicara Bahasa Inggris Taruna; dan 3) Motivasi Belajar berpengaruh terhadap Kemampuan Berbicara Bahasa Inggris Taruna

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of grammar mastery on the ability to write English narrative text. To determine the effect of vocabulary mastery on the ability to write English narrative text and to determine the effect of grammar and vocabulary mastery together on the ability to write English narrative text. The research method used is the survey method. A sample of 77 students was randomly selected from all private vocational high school students in Tangerang city. Data collection is done by conducting a test directly to the sample. Data analysis counduct with descriptive statistical methods, multiple linear regression analysis, statistical test with t- test and F- test. The results of the study showed: 1) There was a significant effect of mastery of grammar and mastery of vocabulary together on the ability to write English narrative text for students of private vocational schools in Tangerang city. This is evidenced by the acquisition of sig = 0.000 <0,05 and Fcount = 97,223. 2) There was a significant effect of grammar mastery on the ability to write English narrative text for students of private vocational schools in Tangerang city. This is evidenced by the acquisition of sig = 0,000 <0,05 and t-count = 4,788. Partially grammar mastery gave a contribution of 19% to the variable of the ability to write English narrative text for students of private vocational schools in Tangerang city. 3) There was a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on the ability to write English narrative text for students of private vocational schools in Tangerang city. This is evidenced by the value of sig = 0.000 <0,05 and tcount = 5,206. Partially (owned) vocabulary mastery contributed 22,5% to the variable of the ability to write English narrative text.

Abstract

The purpose of writing this scientific paper is to see what are the causes of work accidents when loading and unloading on the ship, in order to overcome this happening in order to prevent accidents on board. The research methods used in writing this scientific paper are three methods, namely the survey method, the interview method and the literature study method. The study was conducted on board the MV. Ryoko 8 with GT 4194, under the auspices of PT. The Andalas Bhatera Baruna / ABB. The results obtained from this study are several al that are the causes of work accidents on board ships, namely unsafe actions from humans and unsafe conditions. To prevent work accidents on board the ship, it is necessary to work with great care and also a sense of responsibility, prevent unsafe working conditions, and immediately report all incidents, irregularities, and damage to the slightest equipment to their superiors.

Abstract

Mualim jaga memiliki peran penting dalam mengolah gerak kapal pada saat berlayar untuk menghindari hal-hal yang tidak diinginkan untuk menghindari bahaya-bahaya tubrukan. Perumusan masalah yang diambil penulis dalam KIT ini adalah pelaksanaan dinas jaga untuk mencegah terjadinya bahaya tubrukan di kapal optimalisasi penggunaan alat-alat navigasi untuk mencegah terjadinya bahaya tubrukan dan upaya yang dilakukan dalam kondisi darurat dinas jaga. Dengan metode penelitian kualitatif yang mengahasilkan data deskriptif, pelaksanaan dinas jaga dapat digambarkan secara jelas dan nyata karena data diperoleh dari interview secara langsung serta ditunjang metode kepustakaan yang memberikan gambaran lebih jelas mengenai gambaran yang lebih jelas mengenai informasi yang disampaikan. Hasil yang didapat penulis selama melakukan penelitian adalah pelaksanaan dinas jaga di kapal yang belum terlaksana dengan benar karena Mualim I tidak disiplin dalam melaksanakan tugas jaga, kurangnya rasa percaya diri sebagai mualim fresh graduate pada saat melaksanakan tugas jaga di anjungan serta penggunaan alat-alat navigasi yang belum optimal. Pembahasan terhadap hasil penelitian adalah optimalisasi tugas jaga harus benar-benar diaplikasikan sesuai dengan aturan yang ada, Mualim juga harus berpedoman pada Collision Regulation 1972 dalam menghadapi situasi yang memungkinkan adanya bahaya tubrukan. Penggunaan alat-alat navigasi sebagai pendeteksi adanya bahaya tubrukan harus dapat menghasilkan hasil yang maksimal untuk pencegahan bahaya tubrukan dan untuk menghindari keadaan darurat dinas jaga. .

Abstract

Safety Risk Identification and Handling of Auxiliary Engine Overhaul on Ship is a process that aims to identify potential risks and hazards associated with repairing or maintaining auxiliary engines on ships, as well as developing appropriate handling strategies to mitigate those risks. Safety Risk Identification is carried out with several things, namely Safety Analysis, Hazard Identification, Risk Evaluation, Risk Classification. The handling that can be done in the axuliary egine overhaul is Planning, Education and Training, Use of Equipment and Technology, Supervision and Control, Evaluation and Repair. By identifying safety risks and implementing appropriate handling strategies, vessels can minimize the potential for accidents and injuries during the auxiliary engine overhaul process. This not only protects the ship's crew but also ensures the smooth operation of the ship overall. This study adopts a qualitative approach, conducted through verbal interviews with engine crews and direct observation during the implementation on board. The findings of the study show that safety risks and handling of auxiliary egine overhaul on ships are essential for identifying and maintaining repairs to ship engines.

Abstract

Shipping activities, especially for fishermen, have significant risks. In addition to the unexpected challenges of nature, one of the serious threats that is often overlooked is the risk of ship fires. Fires can occur due to a variety of factors, such as mechanical failures, fuel leaks, or other accidents. The purpose of this study is to find out the socialization of ship fire prevention for fishermen in East Sapa village. The research method used in the socialization of ship fire prevention is a qualitative method. This approach was chosen to deeply understand the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of fishermen related to fire prevention and safety at sea. The results of this study show that community service activities carried out by the North Sulawesi Shipping Polytechnic in collaboration with the East Sapa Village government have succeeded in achieving their goals in providing education and practical skills to the fishing community. The program, which combines interactive counseling and training, has successfully increased the fishermen's knowledge and awareness of various important aspects of their work, including boat maintenance, life safety at sea, and fire prevention.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This research was conducted to investigate how the praxis and effectiveness of digital literacy praxis in diploma III students of the Marine Transportation Management study program at the Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Sulawesi Utara. Methodology: The type of approach used in this study is a mix method approach, which is by combining quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitative research was used to calculate the number of correspondent responses. Qualitative research is the activity of exploring and developing the phenomena that occur. Usually, qualitative research makes a complex picture, examines words, detailed reports from the respondent's point of view and conducts a study on the situation that occurs. Main Findings: From the findings and discussions that have been carried out regarding the praxis of the four pillars of digital literacy in Marine Transportation Management students in the 3rd semester at Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Sulawesi Utara, 2 (two) conclusions can be reached. The first conclusion is that digital skills are the pillars in digital literacy that are most mastered by Marine Transportation Management students in the 3rd semester at Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Sulawesi Utara. Students are very proficient in using digital devices and utilizing the internet network in processing information. Novelty/Originality of this study: In common ways, the result of this research will offer valuable information to set up appropriate solution to make learning materials in order to empower and enrich students skills on literacy understanding and its practice.
