Abstract

Abstract: Dental caries is still a health problem experienced by many children in Indonesia. One of the factors that influence dental caries is behavioral factor. Changing behavior can be done by intervening through dental health education, especially about tooth brushing. One method that encourages the target to participate actively and involves many senses is the demonstration method. This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of dental health education (DHE) accompanied by demonstration method on increasing knowledge of tooth brushing among elementary school students. This was a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group design, using pretest and posttest for the treatment and control groups that were already determined. Samples were 100 students of SD Advent Paal 2 Manado, divided into two equal groups: control group (DHE without demonstration method) and treatment group (DHE with demonstration method). The Wilcoxon test showed that the p-value of dental health education with or without demonstration method was 0.000 (p<0.05), which meant an increase in knowledge after treatment with DHE. However, based on the obtained scores, the difference in the increase in the treatment group was greater than that of the control group. In conclusion, dental health education using demonstration method can increase effectively the knowledge about tooth brushing among elementary school students. Keywords: dental health education; demonstration; knowledge about tooth brushing   Abstrak: Karies gigi masih menjadi masalah kesehatan gigi dan mulut yang dialami oleh banyak anak di Indonesia. Salah satu faktor yang berpengaruh pada penyakit karies gigi yaitu faktor perilaku. Untuk mengubah perilaku, dapat dilakukan intervensi melalui pemberian dental health education (DHE) pada anak, terutama yang berkaitan dengan menyikat gigi. Salah satu metode yang mendorong sasaran untuk ikut secara aktif dan melibatkan banyak indra yaitu metode demonstrasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas DHE dengan metode demonstrasi terhadap peningkatan pengetahuan menyikat gigi siswa sekolah dasar. Jenis penelitian ialah quasi experimental dengan non-equivalent control group design. Penelitian ini menggunakan pretest dan posttest pada kelompok perlakuan dan kontrol yang sudah ditentukan. Sampel penelitian ialah 100 siswa kelas V dan VI SD Advent Paal 2 Manado, dibagi ke dalam dua kelompok; kelompok perlakuan (pemberian DHE disertai metode demonstrasi) dan kelompok kontrol (pemberian DHE tanpa disertai metode demonstrasi). Hasil uji Wilcoxon terhadap kedua kelompok mendapatkan nilai p=0,000 (p<0,05), yang menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan sesudah diberikan DHE. Walaupun demikian, dari perolehan skor yang didapat, selisih peningkatan pada kelompok perlakuan lebih besar dibandingkan kelompok kontrol. Simpulan penelitian ini ialah pemberian dental health education dengan metode demonstrasi efektif dalam meningkatkan pengetahuan menyikat gigi siswa sekolah dasar. Abstract

Abstract: Around 3.5 billion people worldwide face dental health problems, primarily due to a lack of knowledge about the importance of dental care. Therefore, dental health education, especially for children, is crucial. This study was conducted at GMIM Tateli Elementary School, Pineleng District, Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi Province. The aim of this research was to determine the difference in the effectiveness of dental health education using Snakes and Ladders and Busybook media on children's dental health knowledge. This study employed a quasi-experimental method with a pretest and posttest design involving 32 children aged 6-8 years. The Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were used for analysis. The Wilcoxon test results for Snakes and Ladders and Busybook media showed a significance value of p = 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating statistical significance. The Mann-Whitney test showed a significance value of p = 0.048 (p < 0.05), also indicating statistical significance. The conclusion of this study is that dental health education using Snakes and Ladders and Busybook media can improve elementary school children's dental health knowledge, with Snakes and Ladders being more effective than Busybook. Abstract

Abstract: Oral and dental health issues remain a predominant global concern, and Indonesia itself still faces a relatively high prevalence of caries among children aged 10-14 years. Poor oral health habits can be a contributing factor to the development of tooth decay in children. Behavioral changes in children can be achieved through increased knowledge. Interventions through Dental Health Education (DHE) using appropriate methods and media can be conducted to enhance children's knowledge of oral and dental health, expecting of subsequently influencing on their behaviors. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of DHE using simulation and video playback methods in improving the knowledge of oral and dental health among elementary school students. This was a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group, employing pre-tests and post-tests. The study samples consisted of 60 students of SD Negeri Kalasey (elementary school) Manado as respondents, selected through total sampling. The Wilcoxon test conducted on the simulation and video playback education groups obtained a p-value of 0.00 (p<0.05), indicating an improvement of knowledge for both methods. The Mann-Whitney test showed a p-value of 0.689 (p>0.05), indicating there was no significant difference between the two methods. In conclusion, there is no difference in effectiveness between Dental Health Education using simulation and video playback methods. Indonesia masih memiliki prevalensi karies yang cukup tinggi pada anak usia 10-14 tahun. Perilaku yang buruk dalam menjaga kesehatan gigi dan mulut dapat menjadi faktor yang berpengaruh terhadap timbulnya karies gigi pada anak. Perubahan perilaku pada anak dapat diperoleh melalui peningkatan pengetahuan. Intervensi melalui pemberian Dental Health Education (DHE) dengan penggunaan metode dan media yang tepat dapat dilakukan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan kesehatan gigi dan mulut anak, yang diharapkan dapat mengubah perilaku anak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbandingan efektivitas antara DHE metode simulasi dan metode pemutaran video terhadap peningkatan pengetahuan kesehatan gigi dan mulut pada siswa sekolah dasar (SD). Jenis penelitian ialah quasi experimental dengan non-equivalent control group design dan digunakan pre-test dan post-test. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 60 murid SD Negeri Kalasey Manado sebagai responden dengan pengambilan sampel menggunakan total sampling. Hasil uji Wilcoxon terhadap kelompok penyuluhan metode simulasi dan metode pemutaran video menunjukkan nilai p=0,00 (p<0,05) yang berarti pada kedua metode terdapat perbedaan bermakna sebelum dan setelah diberikan perlakuan. Hasil uji Mann-Whitney menunjukkan nilai p=0,689 (p>0,05), yang berarti tidak terdapat perbedaan bermakna antara kedua metode. Simpulan penelitian ini ialah tidak terdapat perbedaan bermakna pada efektivitas antara Dental Health Education metode simulasi dan metode pemutaran video.
