Abstract

The work of Rumorwave explores the potential of the human voice as the main ingredient for the creation of contemporary music without the use of traditional instruments. By utilizing whispers, hiss, muttering, and conversation pieces, this work captures the social dynamics of gossip practices that often occur in everyday life. This research aims to explore how sound works in forming an emotional, reflective, and socially meaningful listening experience. Through an explorative-experimental approach, the creation of works is carried out through the stages of sound collection, vocal manipulation, thematic structure, and sound space packaging. The result is a musical work that is not oriented to conventional forms, but to the honesty of expression and openness of interpretation. This work is also a form of catharsis and criticism of incomplete communication patterns in modern life.

Abstract

This study explores the aesthetic potential of everyday sounds as the primary material in contemporary music composition, using the work “Warung Si Mba” as a case study. The composition employs a musique concrète and soundscape composition approach by incorporating authentic sound recordings from traditional coffee stalls—such as the sound of sipping coffee, clinking spoons, and distinctive vendor calls. Through techniques such as field recording, editing, and layering, these commonly overlooked sounds are transformed into a structured musical narrative imbued with social and cultural significance. The work does not merely document sounds but interprets the cultural context and social interactions embedded within the coffee stall as a communal space for everyday people. This sound exploration broadens the boundaries of contemporary music by utilizing non-traditional sonic materials and creating an auditory experience that is grounded, reflective, and contextually rich. The results demonstrate that the acoustic landscape of daily life can serve as a meaningful source for musical creation, offering artistic innovation while also functioning as social documentation and cultural critique.

Abstract

This article explores the creation of the contemporary music composition Katarsis Vokal, which utilizes the human voice as the primary instrument. The work was born from the need for emotional expression through the exploration of non-conventional sounds such as humming, heavy breathing, and screaming. The creative process included stages of preparation, vocal exploration, dramaturgical structuring, and verification of the work. The results show that free vocal exploration can serve as both an artistic medium and a space for emotional catharsis for both the creator and the audience. In addition to contributing to the development of contemporary music, this work emphasizes that the human voice is the most authentic instrument for conveying deep emotions.

Abstract

This study aims to implement creative dance based on Sundanese pakakas to develop creativity and local cultural awareness in elementary school students. Globalization and the development of digital technology have resulted in a decline in the younger generation's understanding of traditional Sundanese cultural heritage, especially pakakas (traditional household utensils). This study involved 32 students from Muhammadiyah Elementary School in Tasikmalaya through a descriptive qualitative approach for 18 weeks of implementation. The BASTE (Body, Action, Space, Time, Energy) method was used as a framework in exploring creative dance movements inspired by five types of Sundanese pakakas: se'eng, aseupan, hihid, korang, and koja (Kusuma & Hartono, 2023). The results of the study showed a significant increase in: (1) understanding of Sundanese pakakas from 25% to 85% (+60%), (2) exploration of creative movement from 20% to 90% (+70%), (3) character development from 30% to 88% (+58%), (4) motor skills from 40% to 92% (+52%), and (5) appreciation of local culture from 15% to 90% (+75%). The learning rubric assessment showed that 94% of students achieved the "Very Good" or "Good" category in all aspects of the assessment. The implications of this study indicate that the integration of dance with traditional pakakas is an effective medium in preserving local culture as well as developing the creativity and character competencies of elementary school students.

Abstract

Lontang Dance is a traditional Sundanese art form that developed in Purwaraja Village, Ciamis Regency, and functions as a medium for spiritual and social communication within the community. This study analyzes the symbolic meaning of Lontang Dance through the perspective of symbolic interactionism developed by George Herbert Mead and Herbert Blumer. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the study involved participant observation (n=32 participants), in-depth interviews with traditional figures and artists, and visual documentation. The analysis shows that cultural symbols such as the tray, seeng, and ibing movements in Lontang Dance are constructed through a dynamic and ongoing process of social interaction within the community. These symbolic meanings undergo modification and negotiation to maintain religious relevance without eliminating local cultural identity. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how cultural realities are constructed through human interaction and emphasize the importance of local cultural preservation in the context of modernization. This research opens new perspectives in the study of symbolic anthropology and local culture-based arts education.
