Abstract

The synthesis of silver nanoparticles using the green chemistry concept utilizing Java long pepper leaf extract as a reducing agent has been successful. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized under optimum 1 mM silver nitrate concentration, 250 μL Java long pepper leaf extract, and 30 minutes under sunlight radiation. The silver nanoparticles formed can be confirmed by the change in the color of the solution from colorless to brownish red, indicating a reduction of Ag+ to Ag0. The Uv-vis spectrum showed a peak Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) at 441 nm. The FTIR spectrum showed that functional groups' vibrations in the Java Chili Leaf extract confirm that the phenol, alkaloid, and flavonoid compounds present in the extract act as reducing agents. TEM images show spherical silver nanoparticles with an average diameter of 17.65 nm. The potential of silver nanoparticles to detect Hg (II) metal is evidenced by a decrease in the color intensity of the silver nanoparticle solution along with the increasing concentration of Hg (II), which reacts back-oxidizing Ag0 to Ag+. The value of the correlation coefficient of the linear equation is 0.9807.

Abstract

Indonesia has seen a rise in Black Soldier Fly maggots. Maggot farming offers great economic diversification. BSF (maggot) larvae may eat many organic materials, making them special. This helps bioconvert organic waste, which can damage the environment and harm people's health if not treated properly. Protein-rich maggots are animal feed ingredients. Serious maggot cultivation can create new jobs. This maggot culture has a hidden gem that must be removed. Maggot oil studies still produce animal feed. Maggot oil is antibacterial and emollient, making it a cosmetic and medicinal ingredient, according to worldwide studies. Cosmetics use fats as viscosity enhancers or emulsifiers. As a proof of concept, BSF larvae fat will be used in hand cream compositions to show its potential in organic waste processing, animal feed, and health and beauty additives. Naturally, national and international scientific journals and social media have not broadly shared this information and talents. The Cosmetic Engineering study program's Community Service Team shares information, insights, and talents to connect research, education, and community applications. The ITERA Cosmetics Engineering team will train maggot breeders in Triharjo village to increase maggot production and diversify maggot products to boost sales.

Abstract

Way Tuba sub-district, Way Kanan is one of the areas where the majority of people work as farmers. This profession is very vulnerable to direct sunlight exposure which has a negative impact on human health, especially the skin and eyes. The worst danger due to UV exposure that most often occurs is Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC). Awareness of these dangers is still not fully understood by the community, so a program is needed that can increase understanding of the risks of direct sun exposure and skin health. Lecturers of the Cosmetic engineering, ITERA organized a program to increase skin health awareness through several activities such as counseling for PKK groups, training in making simple skin care from natural ingredients around the house and initiating the planting of a family cosmetic garden in the yard. Utilization of natural ingredients around the house can overcome skin damage at a low cost. In addition, with the cultivation of plants that maintain skin health in the home yard, it can be used at any time as prevention not just as treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the types and ways of using natural ingredients around the house for the community, especially the PKK Group as a driving cadre in each village. Based on the results of the questionnaire, this community service program can increase community understanding up to 90% of representatives from 13 PKK groups in each village in Way Tuba District. Some plants were also cultivated directly through the initiation of a family cosmetic garden in one of the residents' yards. This is expected to be a trigger for other PKK groups in utilizing yard land in caring for skin health.

Abstract

: This article introduces a community service conducted by the PkM ITERA team in Hanau Berak Village, Pesawaran Regency, Lampung. Nutmeg, being a primary agricultural commodity in this region, reveals an underutilized surplus of nutmeg flesh, leading to organic waste accumulation. In response to the urgent need for minimizing organic waste and elevating the economic viability of nutmeg fruit flesh, this endeavor is driven by the realization that this waste represents an overlooked potential. Nutmeg flesh possesses intrinsic qualities, notably a rich concentration of antioxidants known for their role in promoting skin health, stabilizing cardiac rhythms, mitigating insomnia, alleviating angina, enhancing digestive processes, improving blood circulation, increasing appetite, and fortifying the immune system. The proposed solution involves the creation of nutmeg-flavored tea, intended to mitigate the issue of excess nutmeg fruit waste while simultaneously augmenting the economic worth of the produced merchandise. Thus, this initiative materializes as a strategy to optimize nutmeg fruit utilization, curtail waste generation, and amplify its market value. The Community Partnership Program administered by the ITERA team serves as a conduit for the enrichment of knowledge, insights, and competencies among local nutmeg farmers, empowering them to generate high-value commodities from an underexploited resource. The scope of activities encompasses the entire production process, extending to packaging design.

Abstract

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight can induce erythema, sunburn, and skin sensitivity, culminating in dermal damage. The application of sunscreen mitigates potential skin harm resulting from solar radiation. This investigation aims to ascertain the optimal formulation for lotion preparations incorporating Orthosiphon aristatus leaf extract and evaluate the sunscreen efficacy of said formulations through in vitro testing. Extraction procedures involved ethanol maceration, followed by phytochemical characterization of the resultant extract. Formulation of the extract into oil-in-water (O/W) lotion preparations was executed, with optimization conducted utilizing the Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method, incorporating varied concentrations of stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, and olive oil to assess their impact on lotion viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion. Subsequent evaluation encompassed in vitro assessment of sunscreen activity for both the lotion and extract. Findings revealed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, and tannins in the extract. Optimal lotion formulation, determined via the SLD method, yielded concentrations of 2.00, 4.22, and 8.78 for stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, and olive oil, respectively. Formulation optimization was guided by minimizing viscosity while maximizing spreadability and adhesion. Confirmation studies underscored the predictive capacity of the SLD method in determining viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion of the cat's whiskers leaf extract lotion. SPF values for the extract and lotion were recorded as 33.63 ± 0.963 and 2.54 ± 0.001, respectively, at a concentration of 30,000 ppm.
