Abstract

PT Bukit Asam Tbk is one of the largest coal producers in Indonesia. Fly ash, the primary waste from the operations of PLTU Bukit Asam, is a fine particle residue from coal combustion that can cause environmental pollution if not properly managed. Based on Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021, fly ash is no longer categorized as hazardous waste (B3), leading to increased research on its utilization. This study aims to utilize fly ash from PLTU Bukit Asam as an adsorbent to reduce iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) content from acid mine drainage at PT Bukit Asam Tbk, using NaOH as a basic activator and varying contact time and adsorbent mass. Characterization of the fly ash morphology using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed that activated fly ash has a more porous structure compared to before activation, increasing the specific surface area and adsorption potential. The study results indicated that the adsorption efficiency of Fe increased with the increasing adsorbent dose, reaching the highest efficiency of 99.95% at a dose of 500 grams and a contact time of 50 minutes. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used to describe the adsorption process. The high determination coefficient (R²) values, ranging from 0.9474 to 0.9916 for Fe and 0.99602 to 0.99862 for Mn, indicate the suitability of these models in the studied adsorption system.

Abstract

Improving the quality of life and welfare through industrial development in various sectors often results in negative impacts such as production waste. One type of waste produced from coal combustion is fly ash and bottom ash, both of which were categorized as hazardous waste (B3) according to government regulations before 2021. With regulatory changes in 2021, this waste can be utilized more flexibly after obtaining Environmental Approval. This study examines the use of bottom ash as an adsorbent to reduce heavy metals in industrial wastewater. Bottom ash from PT PUSRI Palembang was processed into silica gel using the sol-gel method and NaOH activation, with the liquid waste used coming from the liquid waste of the beverage industry in Banyuasin. The results showed that silica gel successfully made from bottom ash has an adsorption capacity following the Langmuir model, with a value of 1.743 mg/g and an adsorption efficiency of 73.69%. The optimal NaOH concentration was found at a 3 M ratio with an average efficiency of 70.84%.

Abstract

The increase in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions due to human activities poses a significant challenge to climate change. CO₂ methanation, the process of converting CO₂ into methane (CH₄), offers a potential solution for reducing carbon footprints and producing useful fuel. This study focuses on developing a fixed bed packed flow reactor made of stainless steel, with a capacity of ±2 liters, to enhance CO₂ methanation efficiency. Nickel (Ni) catalysts were selected due to their relatively low cost and good performance. Experiments were conducted at temperatures up to 400°C to optimize CH₄ production. The results show that higher temperatures increase methane production, with an optimal temperature of 100°C resulting in 39.41% CH₄. Lower CO₂ flow rates also increase CH₄ production due to longer contact times. Higher temperatures reduce residual CO₂, and the amount of active sites on the catalyst affects the reduction of residual CO₂.
