Abstract

The various characteristics of catches and fishing gear provide distinct advantages for fishermen, but these characteristics can cause other problems, namely pressure on stock availability caused by an increase in the number of catches and the use of various types of fishing gear and the efficiency provided. There needs to be good management to handle this. The purpose of this research is to find out the clusterization (grouping) of fishing areas based on the catch and the type of fishing gear in which the results of this study are used as a reference in sustainable fisheries management. This research uses descriptive methods and case studies at PPP Bulu. The analytical method used is the Shannon-Wienner index of diversity (S-W,H'), Margalef richness (R') and clusterization. Clusterization was analyzed using the Hierachical Cluster Analysis (HCA) method to obtain the Euclidean distance. The results showed that the value of diversity has a range of 0-2 and the value of wealth has a range of 1-10. The results of the clusterization show that there are 3 clusters of fishing areas formed based on the catch, while no clusters of fishing areas are formed based on the type of fishing gear operated.

Abstract

Seagrass bed has an important role for biota in waters. The existence of fish in seagrass is influenced by other ecosystems close to seagrass, such as mangroves and coral reefs. This study focuses on fish associated with seagrass in Bama Beach. The data include seagrass coverage and the number of fish for the Diversity, Uniformity, and Dominance. The study was carried out on March 15 to 20, 2018 using the Underwater Visual Census. Results show that seagrass cover was highest in seagrass stations near mangroves (62,66%), while at stations near coral reefs was 37,66. The composition of fish associated with seagrass near mangroves was 361 individuals, while near reefs was 1.454 individuals. The values of diversity, uniformity, and dominance of fish associated with seagrass near mangroves are 2,62; 0,88; and 0,09 respectively while those associated with coral reefs have values of 2,93; 0,85; and 0,06. Family Aulostomidae was dominant in the morning at the station near mangroves, and in the afternoon was dominated by Apogonidae. At the station near coral reefs, the Family Pomacentridae was dominant both in the morning and afternoon. The seagrass conditions in this study are in the healthy category with quite diverse fishes. The level of fish diversity in seagrass was influenced by habitats associated with seagrasses than seagrass cover levels. The condition of Bama Beach as a conservation area is quite good, but the activity of tourists around the coastline must be monitored to maintain the environment.

Abstract

Jatigede Reservoir is one of the multi-functional reservoirs located in Sumedang Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The utilization of Jatigede Reservoir by the community caused ecological pressures that have resulted in a decrease in water quality and fisheries sustainability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate water quality parameters in Jatigede Reservoir to support a sustainable fisheries ecosystem. Sampling was done using purposive sampling and analysis using comparative descriptive. The results showed that the water temperature ranged from 26-29oC, pH 7.9-8.4, and dissolved oxygen 4-5.3 mg/L which still supports fisheries activities. The parameters of light transparency ranged from 0.19-1.1 m, total phosphorus 0.047 - 0.161, and chlorophyll-a 11 - 116 mg/m3 which exceeded the established quality standards. So it is necessary to manage and control pollution in Jatigede Reservoir to improve water quality and support the sustainability of the fisheries ecosystem. Abstract

Abstract

Gejugan Village, located in Pajarakan Subdistrict, Probolinggo Regency, is a coastal area where most residents work as lift-net fishers. In recent years, fish catches have declined due to overfishing and habitat degradation, directly affecting the socio-economic condition of the community. Limited knowledge of conservation practices and a lack of fisheries business diversification have further aggravated the situation. This community service program aimed to develop conservation-based ecotourism while supporting fish stock recovery through the installation of artificial reefs. The program applied a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving academics, local government agencies, and fisher groups. Activities included stakeholder coordination, Marine Protected Area (MPA) management training, artificial reef construction and deployment, crab larvae restocking, and seafood processing training. One unit of artificial reef measuring 175 × 93 × 55 cm was successfully installed at an agreed location and is expected to serve as an artificial habitat and nursery ground for fish and other marine organisms. A total of 1,000 crab larvae were released near the installation site as part of the restocking effort. The program also initiated the development of crab-fishing ecotourism packages as an alternative livelihood for the coastal community. Overall, all planned activities were successfully implemented, strengthening the synergy between environmental conservation and local economic improvement in Gejugan Village.

Abstract

The Bali Strait (FMA 573) is a critical fishing ground and primary habitat for Bali sardinella (Sardinella lemuru), a small pelagic species under increasing exploitation pressure from traditional fishing fleets. However, studies integrating fishing ground characteristics, oceanographic influences, and exploitation status at PPI Kedonganan remain limited. This study aimed to characterize fishing grounds, assess the influence of oceanographic parameters (SST and chlorophyll-a) on fish production, and evaluate the exploitation status of S. lemuru landed at PPI Kedonganan, Bali. Data were collected from February to April 2025 using simple random sampling (n = 1,882 for length-weight analysis; n = 256 for sex ratio). Fishing ground characterization was conducted through participatory mapping. SST and chlorophyll-a data were obtained from Aqua MODIS satellite imagery (2020–2024) and correlated with monthly production data using Pearson correlation analysis. Exploitation status was estimated using the Length-Based Spawning Potential Ratio (LB-SPR) method. This result known that fishing grounds were concentrated within the coastal zone at 1–3 nautical miles from shore, operated by traditional vessels (<5 GT) using purse seine, gillnet, and lift net with mesh sizes of 1–1.5 inches. A weak negative correlation was found between SST and fish production (r = −0.359, p > 0.05) and a very weak positive correlation between chlorophyll-a and production (r = 0.135, p > 0.05), both governed by monsoon dynamics and upwelling. Biological parameters confirmed dominance of immature individuals: negative allometric growth (b = 2.9358; R² = 0.9297), mean condition factor K = 1.01, balanced sex ratio (1:1), and length at first capture (Lc = 13.92 cm) below length at first maturity (Lm = 17.3 cm). LB-SPR analysis yielded SPR = 6%, classifying the stock as over-exploited — a cumulative consequence of coastal fishing grounds, non-selective gear, and intensive capture of pre-spawning individuals. Management interventions are urgently needed, including minimum mesh size regulations and periodic stock monitoring through the LB-SPR approach.

Abstract. Lelono TD, Bintoro G, Setyanto A, Setyahadi D, Sutjipto DO, Adhihapsari W, Aliviyanti D, Isdianto A. 2024. Conservation status of sharks and rays caught in Indonesian Fisheries Management Area 712. Biodiversitas 25: 2603-2614. Elasmobranchs, including sharks and rays, are some of the most vulnerable marine fish and are particularly at risk from fishing pressure. Sharks and rays landing data that listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) appendices and/or assessed as in The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List threatened categories were collected from July to October 2023 at two sites in Indonesian Fisheries Management Area (FMA) 712, East Java, Indonesia, namely Pelabuhan Perikanan Nusantara (PPN) Brondong at Lamongan District and Pelabuhan Perikanan Pantai (PPP) Muncar at Banyuwangi. Stingray species designated as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), or Vulnerable (VU) were recorded at both landing sites. More IUCN Red List threatened ray species were recorded at Brondong than at Muncar. Based on Brondong's international trade status, ray species landed at Brondong are at higher risk of extinction than those landed at PPP Muncar. Six shark species are currently listed in CITES Appendix II: A pelagicus, A. superciliosus, S. lewini, S. zygaena, C. falciformis, and I. oxyrinchus. At PPP Muncar, two of these species were traded. Sharks landing at Muncar included species in IUCN Red List categories, while those landing at Brondong were in four categories. Two CITES categories regulate the capture of sharks landed at PPP Muncar and PPN Brondong. At both sites, numerous species with conservation statuses of CR, EN, VU, and NT are still caught. In conclusion, exploitation and insufficient control threaten the shark and ray populations in PPP Muncar and PPN Brondong. To save these species, conservation efforts should prioritize trade monitoring, habitat protection, and stricter laws.
