Abstract

Hypertension is a prevalent chronic condition among the elderly, and improving patients' knowledge is a crucial factor in achieving successful therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of educational interventions on knowledge among elderly hypertensive patients at Padang Pariaman General Hospital. A one-group pre-test post-test design was used involving 97 elderly participants who received education through pharmacist-led counseling sessions. Knowledge levels were assessed using the Hypertension Knowledge-Level Scale (HKLS). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed a significant improvement in knowledge after the intervention (p < 0.05). Before counseling, most participants had low knowledge, but this improved significantly post-education. The study concludes that structured educational interventions effectively enhance the knowledge of elderly hypertensive patients, and should be incorporated into routine pharmaceutical care.

Abstract

Cough is a physiological reflex to liberate the airway from mucus or foreign objects. Many cough medicines in pharmacies require special expertise to select the proper medication according to the patient's condition. This research aims to evaluation recommendations of drugs for non-productive cough for self-medication from pharmacy staff in Kuranji subdistrict, Padang City.  A cross-sectional study with total sampling techniques is used for collecting data. This research uses a structured interview technique with the main question, what medicine would pharmacy staff recommend if an adult patient comes with a productive cough without any symptoms of infection? There are 30 pharmacies in Kuranji subdistrict, but data that meets the inclusion criteria is only from 25 pharmacies because five pharmacies are not willing to be research sites. Those who were willing to take part in this research were 16 pharmacists and nine non-pharmacist staff. Only 37.5% (6 of 16) of correct drug recommendations were given by pharmacists, and 33.3% (3 of 9) of proper drug recommendations were provided by non-pharmacist staff. There are still many things that could be improved in drug recommendations for this case, with a total average of correct administration of only 36%. The proper drug choices were Bromhexin and Acetylcysteine, while other drugs that were incorrectly chosen were drugs that should have been given with a doctor's prescription, branded drugs with more than one active ingredient , herbs or not the drug of choice for now. There are still many mistakes in the medicine choice, with an average total of only 36% accurate recommendations.

Abstract

The availability of medicine is one of the factors that can be employed to assess the quality of community health centers and determine customer satisfaction. Pharmacists require a strong foundation in drug management knowledge to ensure the medicine availability. Proficient drug management can enhance the rational use of medications, promote rational prescription practices, and improve drug utilization efficiency. This research aims to ascertain the pharmacist's knowledge level and the availability of medicine while also exploring any potential correlations between pharmacist knowledge and medicine availability. This research adopts a non-experimental study design with cross-sectional data collection. The research sample was selected using purposive sampling techniques, employing a questionnaire to assess pharmacist knowledge levels, as well as Drug Usage Reports and Drug Request Sheets (LPLPO) to evaluate the availability of medicine levels. Data analysis involved the Chi-Square test and Spearman Rank test. The study results indicated that the majority of pharmacists possessed a high level of knowledge (73.7%), while most community health centers have a moderate level of medicine availability (73.7%). The Spearman Rank test revealed no significant correlation between pharmacist knowledge levels and the availability of medicine.

Abstract

Introduction: The combination of amlodipine and candesartan can have a better effect, although the cost-effectiveness analysis was not yet determined. This research aimed to establish the Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratio (ICER) value among outpatients with hypertension who used amlodipine-candesartan. Method: This research is a descriptive study that retrospectively gathered data from medical records. It focused on information for hypertensive patients at Universitas Andalas Hospital in 2021. This study compared the standard treatment involving amlodipine-candesartan and sole amlodipine, next to calculate the ICER using cost-effectiveness analysis. Results: Out of the total population of 284, as many as 73 patients were involved in this study. Among these, 21 patients (28.77%) were treated with amlodipine alone, while 52 (71.23%) received an amlodipine-candesartan combination. The Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratio (ICER) for reducing systolic blood pressure was IDR 74,738.10 per one mmHg decrease in the northeast quadrant of the cost-effectiveness chart. The ICER for lowering diastolic blood pressure was IDR 205,918.24 per one mmHg decrease in the northeast quadrant on the cost-effectiveness chart. Conclusion: The cost of the amlodipine-candesartan combination yields superior effects; however, warranting a probabilistic sensitivity analysis to determine its ICER robustness is essential for its effective implementation

Abstract

In the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a combination of chemotherapy drugs (Cyclophospamide, Doxorubicin, Vincristine, and Prednisone) is commonly used. Chemotherapy can lead to side effects such as nausea and vomiting, which can be uncomfortable for patients and may interfere with their treatment. This study aimed to analyze the usage pattern of antiemetics, the compatibility of antiemetics with the emetogenic risk of combination chemotherapy, and the relationship between antiemetic dosage suitability and RINVR scores (Rhodes Index Nausea Vomiting and Retching). The RINVR instrument consists of 8 questions, which evaluates the duration, frequency, amount/volume, and stress related to nausea or vomiting. The study involved 30 patients and data were collected through telephone interviews and patient's medical records. Statistical tests using the independent T test showed mild nausea and vomiting (0-8) for both acute and delayed symptoms against the condition of post-chemotherapy. A normality of RINVR scores was tested and it was determined that the scores were not normally distributed (p<0.05). In bivariate analysis, it was found that the average RINVR scores for both acute and delayed symptoms did not show statistically significant differences (p>0.05). This suggests chemotherapy with emetogenic combination still causes nausea and vomiting even though appropriate antiemetics have been given.
