Abstract

Language transforms experience into meaning. Grammar, which can be metaphorically construed as its powerhouse, enables such a transformation. One of the linguistic approaches utilised to understand the linkage between the semiotic and material world is Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). SFL argues that the experiential meaning of a clause can be investigated through its transitivity structures in terms of Process, Participant, and Circumstance. This study carries out a transitivity analysis of expressions shared by COVID-19 survivors from different parts of the world in an attempt to learn how they construe their experience of illness. The data were obtained from online newspapers published in different countries and conveniently developed into a corpus from which COVID-19 survivors expressions were extracted. All texts under examination were reported in English regardless of their original language. This study examines the survivors direct expressions through their transitivity structures using the SFL framework. The results show that these individuals frequently used relational and abstract material Processes in describing their illness, meaning that they tended to express their physical or psychological experiences metaphorically as beings and actions. This suggests that they abstractly construe their experiences with this viral disease. Constructing experiences abstractly is likely driven by the need to distance themselves from experience as a way of coping with an event perceived as potentially life-threatening.

Abstract

This article discusses environmental postcolonialism practices and the impacts on the environment and indigenous people in William Faulkner's Go Down, Moses and Fatris MF's Merobek Sumatra. Go Down, Moses describes the story of land grabbing from the Chickasaw and Choctaw communities and land conversion into cotton plantations in the Southern United States. On the other hand, Fatris MF's Merobek Sumatra captures the expropriation of the customs territory of Anak Dalam communities and land conversion to oil palm plantations in Sumatra. The writers apply the postcolonial ecocriticism approach by Huggan and Tiffin. The data is analyzed through the qualitative method and the result is presented using the descriptive method. The result of the analysis found that there are three practices of environmental postcolonialism in Go Down, Moses and Merobek Sumatra, which are: (1) Dualistic thinking on environment; (2) Land grabbing from indigenous communities, and (3) Nature exploitation. It is also found that these practices have negative impacts on nature and the indigenous people as represented in both books.

Abstract

Subtitling is one of the development of translation studies. Subtitling has flourished in a movie. More subtitling means more viewers. The movie industry is growing rapidly but it is dominated by foreign movies with subtitles in Indonesia. The use of English subtitles in Indonesian movies is limited. This study is aimed to analyze subtitling strategies of Cultural Words Di Bawah Lindungan Ka’bah of Hamka streamed on WeTV. The movie is nominated the Best Foreign Language Movie at the 84th Academy Awards. This study belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The spoken languages Indonesian, Arabic, and Minangkabau languages as the sources language and its English subtitling as a target language. This study combines Gottlieb subtitling strategies and Newmark Cultural Translation theories. The results of the research: 1) the subtitling strategies used 7 of 10; expansion 45, transcription 41, transfer 37, imitation 16,  paraphrase 4, deletion 2, condensation 1,  2) from 146 subtitles, this study found that the subtitling strategies of cultural words in the Di Bawah Lindungan Ka’bah: Social culture 92, Habbit and Gesture 25, Material Culture 15, Organization, custom and idea 11, and ecology 3. 3)the most subtitling strategies used expansion, 4)the most cultural words used socio culture

Abstract

This study investigates the role of the English Linguistic Landscape as a potential learning medium for English as a Foreign Language (EFL)  in Padang, West Sumatra. While previous studies have described the English Linguistic Landscape in Indonesia, few have explicitly explored its pedagogical value and discursive implications for language learning. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research analyzed 850 English-containing public signs across the city and surveyed 114 EFL students at Universitas Andalas regarding their perceptions of English in public spaces. We examined the signs regarding linguistic units (as the texts) and their visual positioning and relation to symbolic meaning and cultural identity. Findings reveal that English is prominently used in commercial signage, often in larger fonts and strategic positions, signaling its dominance and symbolic prestige over Indonesian. Student responses indicate generally positive attitudes, with more than 80% acknowledging that the English Linguistic Landscape contributes to vocabulary building, grammar awareness, and motivation for language learning. However, the study also notes grammatical and hybrid construction inaccuracies that may reinforce non-standard English patterns. The discussion highlights English Linguistic Landscape as a discourse resource that reflects globalization, power relations, and shifting identities in urban Indonesia. Implications suggest that the English Linguistic Landscape can be integrated into EFL pedagogy through critical analysis tasks and multimodal learning activities. Future research should expand to the digital English Linguistic Landscape and comparative contexts across Indonesian cities. This research underscores the pedagogical and sociocultural significance of the English Linguistic Landscape, though further work is needed to deepen its discourse analysis and pedagogical applications.

Abstract

This study examines lecturers' competence in argumentative writing, emphasizing the rhetorical tactics, coherence, and linguistic difficulties encountered during the process. This research seeks to uncover the strengths and opportunities for growth in academic writing among lecturers, given its crucial role in higher education. The study used a qualitative methodology to investigate a sample of argumentative essays authored by lecturers from diverse fields, assessing the efficacy of their rhetorical methods in articulating and substantiating arguments. The research further examines the coherence of their work, assessing the logical structure and connectivity of ideas and arguments. The research also examines prevalent linguistic obstacles, including clarity, syntax, and vocabulary concerns, that affect the overall quality of argumentative writing. The results indicate that although instructors have robust subject expertise, deficiencies in language competency and argumentative techniques frequently impede the clarity and effectiveness of their work. This study elucidates the necessity for professional development programs designed to improve instructors' academic writing skills, specifically in formulating coherent and rhetorically successful arguments.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif. Objek penelitian ini adalah penerjemahan judul buku berbahasa Inggris (BSu) dan terjemahannya dalam bahasa Indonesia (BSa). Tujuannya adalah menganalisis bentuk linguistik yang ditemukan pada judul BSu dan BSa. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi yang signifikan dalam bidang pembelajaran bahasa Inggris serta bidang penerjemahan, khususnya dalam konteks penerjemahan judul buku berbahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan observasi dan dokumentasi, baik daring maupun luring. Data diperoleh secara acak sehingga terkumpul 212 judul buku (122 novel dan 90 buku motivasi). Analisis dilakukan berdasarkan satuan bahasa berupa kata, frasa, klausa, dan kalimat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bentuk frasa paling dominan (159 data), diikuti kalimat (34), klausa (11), dan kata (8). Bentuk frasa dinilai efektif karena bersifat deskriptif dan minim ambiguitas, sedangkan klausa dan kalimat cenderung sulit diterjemahkan tanpa mengubah gaya atau nuansa teks asli. Abstract This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The object of this study is the translation of English book titles (SL) and their translations into Indonesian (TL). The aim is to analyze the linguistic forms found in the SL and TL titles. This study is expected to make a significant contribution to English language learning and translation field, especially in the context of translating English book titles into Indonesian. Data collection was carried out through observation and documentation, both online and offline. Data were obtained randomly, resulting in 212 book titles (122 novels and 90 motivational books). Analysis was carried out based on linguistic units in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. The results show that the phrase form was the most dominant (159 data), followed by sentences (34), clauses (11), and words (8). The phrase form is considered effective because it is descriptive and has minimal ambiguity, while clauses and sentences tend to be difficult to translate without changing the style or nuance of the original text.
