The focus of this study is the subjective experiences of tattoo owners who experience stigma, prejudice and discrimination from family, social environment, or work. This study uses Symbolic Interactionism Theory which examines how the meaning of tattoos is constructed through social interactions which then give rise to stigma, prejudice and discriminatory actions against tattoo owners. The interpretive paradigm used in this study is Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) which helps researchers to explore in depth the personal experiences of informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six individuals who have permanent tattoos on their bodies from various social and cultural backgrounds. The results of the study showed that male tattoo owners are often perceived with criminal acts such as drug addicts, pickpockets, being rude, thugs. Female tattoo owners are associated as bad women and naughty women. In addition, dynamics of change in the social environment were found before and after having a tattoo. Tattooed individuals experience prejudice and discrimination after they have tattoos on their bodies. Manifestations of prejudice are manifested through marginalization in the workplace, as well as exclusion in everyday social interactions.

Abstract

Some students at SMPN 12 Purworejo are known to have less than optimal communication competence. Students experience difficulties in communication situations in the classroom which is indicated by difficulty in expressing opinions, less active in discussion sessions, and difficulty answering questions. This causes the teaching and learning process in schools to be less effective and the academic achievements obtained are also not optimal. The difficulties experienced by these students are influenced by self-confidence and self-disclosure. This research examines the relationship between self-confidence and self-disclosure with students' communication competence at SMPN 12 Purworejo. This research uses a positivism paradigm and a quantitative approach. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires to 100 respondents with the characteristics of teenagers aged 12-15 years, male and female, and attending SMPN 12 Purworejo. The results of correlation analysis show a significant positive relationship between self-confidence and communication competence and between self-disclosure and communication competence. This relationship is in line with the argumentativeness approach in Super Traits Theory which explains that individuals who have argumentative skills are individuals who are competent in arguing, where individual communication competence includes self-confidence and self-openness (Littlejohn, Foss, Oetzel, 2017). The results of this research indicate that students with good self-confidence and self-disclosure have good communication competence. It becomes easier for students to master the communication situations they face.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology and social media has led to the emergence of various new job opportunities, shifting job trends towards the use of digital media. For video creators, animators, photographers, graphic designers, or influencers, the presence of the Instagram social media platform can be utilized to shape a self-representation that supports their work, while also serving as a space to freely express themselves. Within this perceived safe space, Instagram users sometimes share highly personal and sensitive information on social media. Therefore, awareness and knowledge of social media behavior are needed to minimize the risks that may arise from the freedom of expression and self-disclosure in the online world. This research aims to understand how creative workers manage privacy through the Instagram social media platform. The study employs qualitative research methods, an interpretive paradigm, phenomenological approach, and in-depth interview data collection techniques. In analyzing the unique experiences of the informants, the Communication Privacy Management theory and the concept of self-presentation in Dramaturgy Theory are utilized. The results of this research reveal how creative workers who are Instagram users strive to manage their privacy to shape an ideal self-image to support their work. In operating Instagram while considering information boundaries, creative workers engage in a series of stages ranging from observation, planning, categorizing information, implementing strategies, to monitoring their posts. This study also highlights that there are several criteria considered by creative workers to set their privacy boundaries in the effort of self-disclosure. Each individual has specific motives for uploading information, considering cultural aspects, social context, gender values, and weighing the risks and benefits as consequences of self-disclosure. Additionally, the ideal self-presentation on Instagram is also manifested by creative workers using strategies such as self-promotion and ingratiation.

Abstract

Political news, especially related to the presidential election, should ideally be packaged seriously and substantively because it functions to help the public choose a leader rationally. However, a number of mainstream online media in Indonesia tend to highlight the entertainment and sensational elements displayed by each presidential candidate, especially regarding Prabowo Subianto. This happened to Detik.com which predominantly highlighted the behavior, interesting moments, humor, and conflicts involving Prabowo in the midst of his political activities. With these characteristics, it can be said that tabloidization occurred on Detik.com, where serious political news was packaged in a lighter and more entertaining way, thus reducing its relevance to the public interest. This study uses the framing theory and the framing analysis method of the Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki model to find out how Prabowo Subianto was framed by Detik.com in the tabloidization reporting style in the 2024 presidential election by reviewing the syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical structures of each news item. In addition, Carsten Reinemann's tabloidization elements are also used to describe the characteristics of tabloidization on Detik.com based on the dimensions of topic, focus, and style. The framing results will be categorized based on the style dimensions including trivialization, personalization, emotionalization, and dramatization news styles. From the analysis of 30 news items marked "pemilu" related to Prabowo Subianto published during the presidential election campaign period from January 1 to February 10, 2024, this study concluded that there were five frames categorized into four news presentation styles, namely (1) Prabowo Subianto is feuding with and being attacked by his political opponents (Emotionalization and Dramatization); (2) Prabowo Subianto is close to well-known political figures (Trivialization); (3) Prabowo Subianto is a figure who is meritorious, honorable, and willing to make sacrifices (Personalization and Dramatization); (4) Prabowo Subianto likes to joke and act funny (Trivialization); and (5) Prabowo Subianto participates in society (Trivialization). A review of the topic dimension shows that all news is packaged in the form of soft news and is described as more entertaining, interesting, or raising personal interests so that it is not politically and socially relevant. Meanwhile, the focus dimension shows that Detik.com uses an episodic frame with a focus on individuals where all news contains Prabowo Subianto as the main subject

Abstract

The oversharing behavior of Generation Z on Instagram is influenced by the lack of communication intensity between parents and children, which leads to inadequate supervision and guidance in social media use. As a result, Generation Z tends to seek social validation through oversharing, blurring the boundaries of privacy due to excessive self-disclosure. This study aims to determine the influence of parental communication intensity and self-disclosure on oversharing on Instagram, using an explanatory method and a non-probability sampling technique involving 100 respondents. Based on social penetration theory and family relationship schema, the results of the simple linear regression hypothesis test show that parental communication intensity is inversely related to oversharing, while self-disclosure has a positive relationship with oversharing. The significance value obtained is 0.000.

Abstract

Child's moral education is very important in the era of technological battles, different from the character education whose nature is more diverse depending on the nature of the environment. The impact of globalization has become very diverse especially on the pattern of communication between generations namely millennial generation and alpha generation. The most felt impact is that these two generations often choose a way of communicating indirectly i.e. by using gadgets that then make the relationship between both as a child and parents impressed far away. The presence of gadgets as a means of communication also makes these two generations have different communication experiences with other generations, This research aims to know the communication of parents in educating children's character in a global era that focuses on millennial generation parents in shelter cities. The research results show that there are two characters that can be implemented through communication between parents and children. These two characters are a religious character and an honest character. Intense and open communication is carried out by parents to implement religious character and honest character. The communication carried out is realized in communicating directly and indirectly using gadgets. The task of parents in implementing character education is to try to build good communication with their children so that the advice given can be accepted and implemented by their children. The process of giving advice is carried out through direct communication or indirect communication using a cellphone to make it easier to communicate anytime, anywhere. The process of providing advice through communication is also carried out using a special method for one of the informants. The method used is a way of communicating that tends to be full of laughter, not tense and adapted to the family's conditions at that time so that the message or advice conveyed through the communication process can be digested optimally and without coercion. The communication process in an effort to instill character education is also carried out by providing continuous advice when communicating with children. Parents also provide direct examples to their children to support the advice they have been given regarding practicing worship, and telling the truth which can be used as a habit for children to continue to have a positive attitude.

One of the cases of cyberbullying on TikTok was experienced by the account @Cimoycantik12, who received insulting comments, taunts, and insults from teenagers through her comments section. In that case, this research aimed to describe what forms of cyberbullying are given by the perpetrators on the official TikTok account @Cimoycantik12 and analyze the various reasons for the perpetrators in cyberbullying on the official TikTok account @Cimoycantik12.The research utilized Alfred Schutz's phenomenological approach and the General affective aggression model (GAAM) by involving 5 teenagers (aged 18-24 years) who had committed cyberbullying on TikTok account @Cimoycantik12. It is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The results of this study indicate that the form of cyberbullying that occurs is carried out by teenagers as perpetrators is an action that they consciously take because of the personal experience of the perpetrator who has also been a victim of cyberbullying and the factor of the victim in this study, @Cimoycantik12, which provokes the perpetrators to commit acts of cyberbullying against him. The form of cyberbullying found in the official TikTok @Cimoycantik12 is a form of flaming and harassment carried out through the TikTok @Cimoycantik12 comment column. The reason for teenagers as perpetrators of cyberbullying on the official TikTok @Cimoycantik12 account is because the perpetrators consider that the TikTok @Cimoycantik12 content is less educational, not in accordance with the ethics of social media in adolescence which should trigger the perpetrators to carry out cyberbullies.

Abstract

Saipul Jamil was officially released from prison for child sexual abuse and bribery. This moment drew controversy because the media violated ethics by glorifying the freedom of child sexual abuse perpetrators without thinking about the victims’s trauma. Mass media need to pay attention to journalistic ethics as a guideline in directing the behavior of journalists in carrying out their duties. This study aims to reveal how Tribunnews.com framed the news of Saipul Jamil's freedom. Media frequently have perspectives, ideologies, and media agendas in creating certain frames that influences the audience's perception. The researcher selected 10 news articles from Tribunnews.com from September 2 until 3, 2021. This study's research approach was the framing analysis developed by Zhongdang Pan and M. Kosicki which is classified into two concepts, psychological and sociological. The results of this study found that Tribunnews.com tends to use psychological framing. Journalists can accentuate the more favorable aspects and hide the detrimental aspects. The framing structure in the form of syntax, script, thematic, and rhetoric leads to glorification by highlighting the artist Saipul Jamil, indicated by photos and details of Saipul Jamil's freedom. Tribunnews.com emphasizes Saipul Jamil's freedom, ranging from ceremonies, activities to be carried out, career plans after release, to his experience in prison. This is influenced by capitalistic ideology and celebrity culture to attract audiences and generate as much profit as possible. Because, celebrity life is still a favored topic for the general public. The news of Saipul Jamil's freedom caused pros and cons from various parties and offended Saipul Jamil's victims. Therefore, Tribunnews.com violated article 2, which states that journalists are obliged to consider whether the news should be delivered, so as not to trigger social unrest or offend certain parties. In addition, Tribunnews.com also violated article 5, which state that journalists should be balanced and fair as much as possible, and prioritize accuracy over speed in presenting news. Tribunnews.com tends to present events from one party in order to deliver news quickly to the public

Abstract

The cyanide coffee case in 2016 resulted in the death of Wayan Mirna Salihin, and Jessica Wongso had to serve a 20-year prison sentence. In 2023, the documentary Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso appeared, which raised the story and became a hot topic of conversation among the public. The purpose of this study was to find out how the Jessica Wongso murder case is represented in the film Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee, and Jessica Wongso. This study uses a qualitative approach with John Fiske's Semiotic analysis method at three levels, namely: reality, representation, and ideology. This analysis includes how the film depicts events, characters, and narratives that can influence the audience's perception of Jessica as the accused. The results of this study show First, how the media shapes public opinion towards Jessica Wongso. Through CCTV footage, interviews, and reconstructions of events that display certain narratives that emphasize the mystery and doubt about Jessica's guilt. Second, cinematic techniques such as camera angles, lighting, and background music to create tension strengthen the narrative that is being conveyed. Third, the narrative in this film suggests that Jessica may be a victim of injustice in the legal system and the media, where the film questions whether justice has truly been served. And finally, the media has a great influence in shaping public opinion, which as depicted in the media in this film emphasizes how a suspect can be perceived based on the social construction formed by the media.
