Abstract

This study investigates how religious literacy and cultural materialism are represented in My Next Words, a government-issued English textbook series for elementary schools in Indonesia, and examines their alignment with the values of Profil Pelajar Pancasila. As English language learning is expected to promote not only communicative competence but also character education, this research explores the ideological content embedded in the textbook series for Grades 1, 2, 4, and 5. Using Critical Discourse Analysis as the methodological framework, the study analyzes how texts and illustrations convey messages related to religious values, material culture, and national character dimensions. The findings reveal that while the textbooks implicitly promote politeness and individual responsibility, they lack substantive religious or cultural representation. Cultural materialism is present through the portrayal of modern, middle-class lifestyles and material possessions. Although the textbooks support aspects of independence and moral behavior, they fall short in promoting diversity, collaboration, and critical thinking. This research highlights the need for more inclusive and reflective English learning materials that align with Indonesia’s educational goals and diverse cultural realities.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a pop up book media that can strengthen the character of nationalism in elementary school students. The development model used in this development research is the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The subjects of this study were all grade IV students of SDIT Ali Bin Abi Talib with a total of 34 people and 1 class teacher. Data were obtained from observation, interviews, documentation, and tests and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that students needed pop-up book learning media to improve the character of nationalism. The pop-up book media developed gets a very valid category based on the validation results of each expert. The results of validation by material experts and media experts are included in the "Good" category. Then, the results of the t-test on the test data showed that there was a significant difference in nationalism character between students who were taught using Pop up book media and students who were not taught using media. Therefore, the pop-up book media developed is feasible and can be used as an alternative learning media for students to improve the character of nationalism.

Abstract

Politeness is an essential aspect of pragmatic competence that enables learners to use language appropriately in different social contexts. While previous studies have primarily focused on politeness strategies in classroom-based teacher–student interactions, research on politeness within digital learning environments for children remains limited. This study addresses this gap by examining the use of politeness strategies in children’s English learning media through the VOA learning English (Let’s Learn English - Level 1 series), with particular attention to their functions in supporting instructional interaction in a digital learning context. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using a pragmatic analysis framework grounded in politeness theory. Spoken utterances were transcribed, categorized into the four types of politeness strategies, and interpreted in terms of their contextual meanings. The findings indicate that all four politeness strategies are present in the videos, with positive politeness being the most dominant, followed by bald on-record, negative politeness, and off-record strategies. The frequent use of positive politeness reflects the instructor’s efforts to foster closeness, encouragement, and emotional support, which support children’s motivation and confidence in learning English. Although this study is limited to beginner-level VOA episodes, it demonstrates that politeness strategies in digital media can model social communication skills. Practically, integrating pragmatic elements into multimedia language instruction can enhance character building and polite communication behaviors. Future research could explore politeness strategies in other digital learning platforms, learners at intermediate and advanced levels of English proficiency, or cross-cultural contexts to further investigate pragmatic competence in online language education.

Abstract

Research competence is a key requirement for pre-service English teachers, yet its development remains a challenge. Project-Based Blended Learning (PjBBL), known for promoting engagement and autonomy, holds potential to address this issue. However, its influence on students’ research readiness is still underexplored. This study investigates English education students’ perceptions of their research readiness after engaging in PjBBL. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions with undergraduate students enrolled in a research methods course. Findings indicate that PjBBL enhances foundational research skills, critical thinking, and collaboration but presents challenges in advanced data analysis, time management, and resource accessibility. The study underscores the need for structured guidance, resource support, and training in research methodologies. Future research is encouraged to explore longitudinal impacts of PjBBL on research competence and to examine its integration with digital tools for advanced data analysis and academic writing.
