Abstract

Mathematical generalization ability is an aspect that students must master in mathematics. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the application of the discovery learning model on students' mathematical generalization ability. This research uses a quantitative approach with experimental methods, using a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design. The research sample consisted of two classes in one of the high schools in Indonesia, Data were collected through pretest and posttest tests, and analyzed using normality test, homogeneity test, and t-test. The normality test used SPSS with Kolmogorov-Smirnov. The results of the analysis presented show that the pretest and posttest data in the experiment are normally distributed, it can be seen that the significance value of the pretest of the experimental class and the control class is 0.44. this shows that the significance value> 0.05 which means Ho is accepted. The results showed that there was a significant increase in students' mathematical generalization ability in the experimental class compared to the control class. The average posttest score of the experimental class is higher than the control class, indicating that the discovery learning model helps students understand mathematical concepts better through independent exploration and analysis. Thus, it can be concluded that the discovery learning model is effective in improving students' mathematical generalization ability, and can be an alternative learning method that is more interactive and innovative in teaching mathematics.

Abstract

Linear algebra is an area of mathematics that is widely considered challenging. One of the subjects covered is the system of linear equations in two variables. During their first year of college, Pre-Service Teachers (PST) study this subject using increasingly sophisticated approaches and theories. The objective of this qualitative study is to classify and describe the Mathematical Thinking Trajectories (MTT) of PST in solving a system of linear equations in two variables problems. Thirty-three PST majoring in mathematics education who enrolled in the Errors and Misconceptions in Mathematics course participated in this study, which used written answers as research data. The Three Worlds of Mathematics theory framework is used in this study. Seven MTT classifications were identified by the research findings: (1) embodied, (2) symbolic, (3) embodied-symbolic, (4) symbolic-embodied, (5) formal, (6) embodied-symbolic-embodied, and (7) symbolic-embodied-symbolic. “Embodied” refers to how PST applies mathematical ideas that focus on actual objects, “symbolic” focuses on symbols, operations, and their properties, and “formal” focuses on definitions, theorems, and logical procedures. In learning practices, the results of this study can be applied to create learning that is meaningful and that fosters the growth of algebraic thinking abilities.

Abstract

Effective collaboration in mathematics learning is essential for developing students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills; however, identifying patterns that lead to successful group collaboration remains challenging. This study aims explicitly to identify and classify the patterns of student group assignment completion in the Logic and Sets course using the Naïve Bayes algorithm. Survey data from 65 mathematics education students were analyzed using a quantitative approach and machine learning techniques. Attributes such as group size, task completion time, participation, contribution strategies, and communication effectiveness were collected via structured questionnaires. Data analysis involved preprocessing, model training using Naïve Bayes, and validation through accuracy and posterior probability analysis. Results indicated that the Naïve Bayes model accurately distinguished groups with very good (A) and fairly good (B) performance, achieving 84.62% accuracy. Groups achieving an A grade typically featured balanced participation and open communication strategies, whereas groups graded B exhibited uneven participation and passive members. This research significantly contributes by demonstrating how data-driven predictive analytics can support instructors in monitoring and enhancing collaborative learning processes in mathematics courses. Future research could further refine predictive accuracy by incorporating additional factors such as leadership style and collaborative technologies, potentially integrating the model into learning management systems for real-time evaluation and intervention.

Abstract

The low contextual relevance of conventional mathematics learning materials often results in limited student engagement and understanding, especially in diverse cultural settings. To address this gap, this study aims to develop valid, practical, and effective ethnomathematics-based numeracy literacy questions by integrating the cultural elements of Peci Tapis Lampung into mathematics instruction. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). In the development phase, the questions were validated by four experts in material, design, and assessment using expert validation sheets. Student responses were measured through a practicality questionnaire. Quantitative data from expert validation were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the validity level, while student response data were processed to assess practicality. The validation results indicated that the questions were "Very Valid" with a score of 84%, and student responses revealed a practicality level of 83.75%, categorized as "Very Practical". Additionally, the normalized gain (N-Gain) was calculated at 61.03%, indicating a “High” effectiveness level in improving students' numeracy literacy.  These findings suggest that incorporating local cultural contexts into numeracy literacy can enhance the meaningfulness of mathematical learning and foster a greater appreciation for regional heritage. The ethnomathematics approach, therefore, offers a promising strategy for creating culturally responsive mathematics education.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ critical thinking skills in solving numeracy literacy problems based on their levels of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL). The research employed a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design, involving 36 eleventh-grade students from a public senior high school in Bojonegoro. Quantitative data were collected through SRL questionnaires and numeracy literacy tests, while qualitative data were obtained from in-depth interviews with students representing high, medium, and low SRL categories. The results reveal a consistent relationship between SRL levels and critical thinking abilities. Students with high SRL demonstrated systematic and reflective critical thinking, encompassing interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and reflection. Students with medium SRL showed adequate analytical and evaluative abilities but were less consistent in reflection, while students with low SRL tended to rely on procedural thinking without re-evaluating their results. This study contributes by providing an exploratory mixed-methods profile of students’ critical thinking across different levels of self-regulated learning in numeracy literacy problem solving. The findings suggest that enhancing self-regulation plays a vital role in fostering students’ critical thinking, particularly in numeracy literacy tasks that require logical reasoning and metacognitive reflection.

Abstract

This research aims to explore students’ proportional reasoning at the early attempts at quantifying stage when students face proportional situations, especially mathematical literacy problems. This research uses a qualitative research approach involving grade 9 junior high school. Data was collected by providing mathematical literacy problems containing proportional situations and in-depth interviews with research subjects. The research results show that students in the early attempts at quantifying stage begin to identify important variables, recognize regularities, and develop plans to solve problems. Students apply inappropriate addition relationships in proportional situations, add or subtract numbers without understanding the concept of comparison, and have a sense of comparing sizes that are bigger and smaller, but students have limitations in understanding the concept of proportionality, especially in recognizing when comparison should be used, students try to identify comparative patterns, students have difficulty connecting patterns to multiplicative forms; able to conclude, but the conclusions are wrong due to limitations in understanding the concept of proportionality which results in inaccurate results. This study provides a novel contribution by specifically focusing on the “early attempts at quantifying” stage, a crucial yet underexamined phase in proportional reasoning development. The findings fill a gap in understanding how students transition from additive to multiplicative reasoning when faced with real-world mathematical problems. The implication is that assistance is needed in the form of exercises that increase students' understanding and sensitivity to multiplicative situations and relationships between variables in solving mathematical literacy problems.

Abstract

Technological advancement is now a part of everyday human existence. A good example of this is the field of education. It is now widely understood that learning must be adaptable and accessible at all times in order to meet the needs of diverse learners. This level of flexibility is provided by the Blended instruction paradigm, which mixes in-person and online instruction. This study aims to determine the effect of the blended learning model assisted by QR codes on student learning outcomes in the Matrix Algebra course. The study took a quantitative approach and used a quasi-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest. The study included 34 Mathematics Education Program students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Metro in Indonesia. The researchers created and administered a series of verified and reliable (0.86) test instruments to the students, then evaluated the results with a paired sample t-test. Based on the findings, it is possible to conclude that implementing the blended learning approach with QR codes had a considerable favorable impact on students’ academic progress in the Matrix Algebra course. This research innovatively proposes a blended learning framework involving qualitative data and advanced theoretical mathematics with the use of QR codes. The research shows that a blended learning framework with integrated QR codes can be effective and useful in improving university students’ conceptual understanding and learning outcomes in mathematics courses.
