Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was conducted to determine the optimum immersion time of recombinant giant grouper growth hormone (Ephinephelus lanceolatus; rElGH) at a dose of 15 mg/L that generated highest growth of white shrimp post-larvae (PL). PL was bath-immersed for one, two, and three hours. Two types of control was provided, namely it was without any treatment (control), and immersion in water containing 0.01% bovine serum albumin (BSA) and total protein of Escherichia coli without rElGH (pCold control). All treatments and controls were consisted of three replications. A total of 1,500 PL-2 shrimp were bath-immersed in a plastic packing containing 1 L of sea water, 15 mg/L rElGH, and 0.01% BSA. PL was further reared for 21 days in the 60 L glass aquarium, and fed nauplii Artemia two times and flake commercial diet five times daily, at satiation. The results showed that the highest of biomass (36.29±1.46 g), specific growth rate (29.81±0.87%/day), and body length (20.08±0.42 mm) were obtained in three hours immersion treatment (P<0.05). Biomass of PL in three hours immersion treatment was approximately 66.0% higher compared to the control (21.87±2.53 g). Survival of shrimp in all treatment and control were similar (P>0.05). Thus, growth of white shrimp PL could be improved by bath immersion for three hours in rElGH solution of 15 mg/L water. Keywords: recombinant growth hormone, different immersion time, Pacific white shrimp, biomass  ABSTRAK Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menentukan lama waktu perendaman hormon pertumbuhan rekombinan ikan kerapu kertang (Ephinephelus lanceolatus; rElGH) dosis 15 mg/L yang menghasilkan pertumbuhan tertinggi pada pascalarva (PL) udang vaname.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The important role in determining the productivity of shrimp was the quality and quantity of shrimp sperm. The decreasing of hatching rate was predicted as the effect of the decreasing quality of sperm. It then could  influence  the number and quality of naupli produced. Hormonal induction of maturation is one of alternative solution that can improve shrimp sperm quality. This study was conducted to examine the effect of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) and antidopamine (AD) injection on white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei sperm quality. This research consisted of six treatments which were treatment without eyestalk ablation, eyestalk ablation, and premix PMSG hormone, and AD at the dose  of 0.1 mL/kg, 0.25 mL/kg, 0.5 mL/kg, and 1 mL/kg. The observed parameters were sperm count and percentage of normal and abnormal sperm. The results showed that PMSG hormone and AD injection could improve sperm quality of L. vannamei shrimp. Hormone at the dose of 0.25 mL/kg and 0.5 mL/kg were the optimal doses to increase sperm count and the percentage of normal sperm, also to lower the percentage of abnormal sperm. Keyword: PMSG, AD, sperm quality, Litopenaeus vannamei  ABSTRAK Kuantitas dan kualitas sperma udang jantan sangat berperan penting dalam menentukan produktivitas udang.

Abstract

This article explores the urgency and relevance of critical education in addressing various contemporary educational challenges, such as the commercialization of education, inequality in access, decontextualized curricula, digital transformation, inclusivity, and gender issues. Using a library research approach, the authors examine the concept of critical education grounded in the thoughts of Paulo Freire and other figures like Ki Hadjar Dewantara, while highlighting how critical education fosters reflective thinking, social awareness, and active student participation. The article also presents best practices from Indonesia, such as community-based education, local curricula, and alternative schools, which are seen as effective in embodying the principles of critical pedagogy in real-world contexts. Thus, critical education is viewed as a strategic solution to equip the younger generation in navigating the complexities of global change with wisdom and responsibility.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the immune response of whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) to prevent infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV) infection by incorporating Lonicera japonica water extract into artificial feed. A total of 180 whiteleg shrimp were used in four treatment groups (triplicate) receiving different doses of L. japonica extract in their feed, including treatment A (1% w/w), B (2% w/w), C (3% w/w), and D (without supplementation/control). The dietary treatments were applied twice daily for two weeks. On the 15th day, the shrimp were injected intramuscularly at the fifth abdominal segment with IMNV isolates (100 µL/shrimp) and observed for seven days post-infection (dpi). The parameters observed included hemolymph profile, survival rate, gross clinical signs, and water quality. IMNV infection was confirmed through both external clinical signs and PCR tests. The results showed that the addition of L. japonica water extract to the feed improved the survival rate and immune responses of whiteleg shrimp following the IMNV challenge test. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of L. japonica water extract at a concentration of 2% w/w in artificial feed could serve as a preventive agent against IMNV infection in whiteleg shrimp.
