Abstract

Kutu putih (Pseudococcidae) merupakan hama penting yang menyebabkan kerusakan fisiologis dengan mengisap getah dari floem dan juga bertindak sebagai vektor patogen tumbuhan, termasuk virus, bakteri, dan jamur. Tujuan studi ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi spesies kutu putih pada tanaman hias dan mengevaluasi potensi mereka dalam menularkan patogen di lingkungan tropis. Sampel dikumpulkan dari tiga spesies tanaman hias, yaitu Agave americana, Heptapleurum arboricola, dan Colocasia esculenta L, di Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA) Universitas Mulawarman. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain deskriptif-eksploratif untuk mengidentifikasi spesies kutu putih dan menganalisis potensinya sebagai vektor patogen pada tanaman hias.  Pengambilan sampel dilakukan secara purposif dengan kriteria inklusi sebagai berikut: (1) tanaman hias yang menunjukkan gejala infestasi kutu putih (misalnya koloni berwarna putih, daun menguning, atau nekrosis), (2) tanaman yang termasuk dalam tiga spesies target (Agave americana, Heptapleurum arboricola, dan Colocasia esculenta L.), dan (3) lokasi tumbuh yang terpapar kondisi lingkungan alami (tidak dalam rumah kaca atau perlakuan pestisida). Identifikasi morfologis menunjukkan dua spesies kutu putih dominan, Paracoccus marginatus dan Pseudococcus cryptus, yang ditemukan pada fase nimfa betina dan dewasa. Fase instar II dan III melibatkan aktivitas makan dan pengeluaran madu, yang memfasilitasi penularan patogen melalui mekanisme mekanis dan biologis. Pengeluaran ini juga menciptakan kondisi ideal untuk kolonisasi patogen sekunder, seperti spesies Fusarium dan Capnodium. Kondisi iklim tropis yang hangat dan lembap memperkuat vektorisasi patogen oleh kutu putih. Temuan ini memperkuat gagasan bahwa kutu putih memainkan peran epidemiologis yang signifikan dalam penyebaran penyakit tanaman hias, memberikan dasar penting untuk strategi pengendalian biologis dan pemantauan penyakit di lingkungan tropis.

Abstract

Speaking is one of important language skills that should be mastered by vocational school students in order to be able to compete in 21st century. It is of the most frequently utilized and most challenging language abilities. The aim of the study is to improve students’ speaking skills through cooperative learning. It categorizes as action research study consisting of plan, implementation, observation, and reflection adapted from Kemmis, McTaggart, and Nixon. Thirty six students who were in the tenth grade of Public Vocational School 7 Yogyakarta majoring tourism participated in the study. They consisted of 33 females and 3 males. Two cycles and eleven meetings were applied during the research. The data were collected through observation, interview, questionnaire, and assessment. The findings shows that the students’ speaking skills improved during the teaching and learning process through some activities such as using classroom English; applying cooperative learning methods: two stray two stay, think-pair-share, numbered heads together, and inside outside circle methods; encouraging the students to be aware with their performance and be able to do self-correction as well as giving feedback to other performance; adapting the learning materials to suit students’ needs; and motivating students to bring a dictionary and install electronic dictionary in their mobile. The students speaking scores before and after implementing cooperative learning show significant improvement from the total mean of the class 482.5 to 512.5. To sum up, cooperative learning is successful in improving the students’ speaking skills. The results of the research provide useful insight for teachers considering improving language skills by using cooperative learning. Abstract

Allium spp. has long been recognized for its diverse therapeutic benefits, particularly as a natural source of antibacterial agents. Various bioactive compounds found in Allium spp., such as allicin, diallyl disulfide, ajoene, and quercetin, have demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial pathogens. Research on the mechanisms of antibacterial action of these compounds reveals that they work by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, inhibiting protein synthesis, and interfering with bacterial metabolism. This literature review aims to examine existing studies on the antibacterial potential of Allium spp., reviewing the bioactive compounds involved, their mechanisms of action, and their effectiveness in inhibiting bacterial growth, including antibiotic-resistant pathogens such as methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli. The findings of this review indicate that while their effectiveness may vary depending on the specific compound and form of application, Allium spp. shows considerable promise as a natural alternative for combating bacterial infections and addressing the growing issue of antibiotic resistance. This article provides deeper insights into the relevance and potential of Allium spp. in the development of antimicrobial therapies based on natural sources through a literature-based approach.

Abstract

Samarinda's Universitas Mulawarman Botanical Garden or Kebun Raya Universitas Mulawarman Samarinda (KRUS) has an important role in biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and flora and fauna-based ecotourism. However, in recent years, KRUS has faced challenges in management and tourist attraction so that it has decreased its function. This study aims to analyze the revitalization strategy of KRUS as a conservation-based edu-tourism using SWOT analysis. The method used is a literature study with a qualitative approach based on content analysis of various scientific sources related to botanical garden management strategies. The results showed that KRUS has advantages in the form of diversity of Kalimantan endemic flora and fauna and its potential as an environmental education center. However, the main challenges faced are limited infrastructure, environmental degradation, and lack of promotion and community involvement. To overcome these problems, the proposed strategies include Strengthening development of educational tourism packages, diversifying education-based tourism attractions, and increasing collaboration with academic institutions and communities, and utilization of digital technology for promotion and education. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of synergy between academics, government, and the community in sustainable botanical garden management. Further research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies implemented and their impact on environmental conservation and the local economy.

Abstract

The problem of inorganic waste in tourist areas, such as Kalomang Beach, is pressing due to the low level of understanding among visitors and the local community regarding the impact and long decomposition time of waste. This lack of knowledge encourages littering behavior.This community service program aimed to enhance environmental awareness and change behavior through education. The methodology included observation, planning, and the installation of informative educational signboards. The main result was the development of an interactive educational signboard placed in strategic locations. These signs display real inorganic waste samples, such as plastic bottles (450 years) and plastic bags (20 years), along with their estimated decomposition times. The placement of the signs proved effective in attracting attention. Initial evaluations indicated an increase in awareness and several areas appearing cleaner. Although long-term evaluation is still required, the program successfully served as an important first step in triggering behavioral change. The implication is the effectiveness of education as a model for future sustainable environmental programs.

Abstract

Capung (Odonata spp.) merupakan kelompok serangga yang melimpah di Indonesia, berpotensi digunakan sebagai bioindikator keseimbangan ekosistem karena sensitivitasnya terhadap perubahan lingkungan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keanekaragaman, kemerataan, dan dominansi jenis capung di kawasan Taman Wisata Alam Mangolo sekitar Bumi Perkemahan Kea-Kea. Penelitian dilakukan menggunakan teknik observasi lapangan melalui penjelajahan di sekitar aliran sungai dan area hutan. Analisis data menggunakan indeks keanekaragaman Shannon–Wiener (H’), indeks kemerataan (E’), dan indeks dominansi (D’). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ditemukan 15 jenis capung. Nilai indeks keanekaragaman (H’) di sekitar aliran sungai sebesar 1,14, sedangkan di area hutan sebesar 0,88; kedua nilai tersebut tergolong dalam kategori keanekaragaman rendah (H’ ≤ 2). Indeks kemerataan (E’) di sekitar aliran sungai sebesar 0,48 dan di area hutan sebesar 0,45,  menunjukkan bahwa komunitas capung pada kedua habitat tergolong komunitas tertekan (0 < E’ ≤ 0,5). Nilai indeks dominansi (D’) capung di sekitar aliran sungai sebesar 0,46 dan termasuk dalam kategori dominansi rendah (0 < D’ ≤ 0,5), sedangkan di area hutan nilai indeks dominansi sebesar 0,62 dan tergolong dalam kategori dominansi sedang (0,5 < D’ ≤ 0,75). Perbedaan nilai indeks tersebut menunjukkan bahwa kondisi habitat berpengaruh terhadap struktur komunitas capung, terutama terkait ketersediaan air dan karakteristik lingkungan perairan.

Abstract

Fermentasi kombucha melibatkan aktivitas kultur simbiotik bakteri dan ragi (SCOBY) yang dipengaruhi oleh konsentrasi gula dan waktu fermentasi sebagai parameter utama penentu kualitas minuman. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pengaruh variasi konsentrasi gula dan lama fermentasi terhadap aktivitas antioksidan kombucha berdasarkan studi literatur. Metode yang digunakan adalah studi literatur dengan menelaah artikel penelitian dan review ilmiah yang dipublikasikan dalam sepuluh tahun terakhir melalui basis data PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, dan Google Scholar. Analisis dilakukan secara deskriptif dengan membandingkan hasil-hasil penelitian terkait konsentrasi gula, waktu fermentasi, dan aktivitas antioksidan. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa aktivitas antioksidan kombucha meningkat pada fase awal hingga pertengahan fermentasi dan mencapai nilai optimal pada hari ke-6 hingga ke-10, kemudian menurun pada fermentasi yang lebih lama. Konsentrasi gula optimal berada pada kisaran 7–10% (b/v) atau setara dengan 50–70 g/L, yang mendukung pertumbuhan mikroba dan pembentukan senyawa bioaktif secara maksimal. Konsentrasi gula yang terlalu rendah menghambat fermentasi, sedangkan konsentrasi yang terlalu tinggi dapat menyebabkan stres osmotik pada mikroba. Kesimpulannya, pengendalian konsentrasi gula dan waktu fermentasi yang tepat merupakan faktor kunci dalam optimalisasi produksi kombucha sebagai minuman fungsional dengan aktivitas antioksidan tinggi.
