Abstract

ABSTRACT This study focused on analyzing  flouting of maxim that was performed by characters and the reasons for characters flouting maxims in The Help movie. This study used a qualitative content analysis. The data source was from The Help movie’s script. The data were in the form of dialogues and utterances among characters that contained of flouting maxims. Through the analysis process, the researcher found 32 data containing of all flouting of maxim types: flouting of maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting of maxim of relevance, and flouting of maxim of manner. In addition, the characters flouted the maxims due to several reasons such as competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. Maxim of quality became the most frequent flouted type and mostly came together with conflictive through making sarcastic utterances. The characters gave sarcastic utterances because the interlocutors kept talking about the speaker’s dislike topic, such as getting marriage and downgrading the job.Key words: Cooperative Principle, Conversational Maxims, Flouting of Maxims ABSTRAKFokus penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa jenis penyimpangan maksim yang dilakukan oleh karatkter dan alasan mengapa mereka menyimpang maksim di film The Help. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian analisis kualitatif pada konten. Sumber data adalah dari naskah film The Help dan data dalam bentuk dialog dan ujaran antara karakter yang berisi penyimpangan terhadap maksim. Setelah menganalisa data, peneliti menemukan 32 data yang menunjukkan semua jenis maksim telah disimpangkan di film The Help, yaitu maksim kuantitas, maksim kualitas, maksim relevansi, dan maksim cara. Selain itu, karakter menyimpang maksim karna beberapa alasan, yaitu kompetitif, konvivial, kolaboratif, dan konfliktif. Maksim kualitas menjadi tipe yang paling sering disimpang dan hampir semua menggunakan konfliktif sebagai alasan dengan membuat ujaran sarkastik. Ujaran sarkastik dibuat untuk menyinggung lawan bicara karena mereka terus membahas topik yang tidak disukai oleh penutur, seperti menyuruh untuk cepat menikah dan merendahkan pekerjaan.Kata kunci: Prinsip kooperatif, maksim konvensional, pinyampangan maksim.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the correlation between students’ writing attitudes and their writing achievement among twelfth-grade students at SMA Tri Sukses Natar. Writing is considered one of the most essential skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning since it reflects students’ critical thinking ability, language competence, and confidence in expressing ideas in written form. This research employed a quantitative correlational design involving 23 twelfth-grade science students. The data were collected through a writing attitude questionnaire and a writing achievement test in the form of a descriptive essay consisting of 200–250 words. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 21 with the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation formula to determine the relationship between the two variables. The results showed that the students’ mean score of writing attitude was 2.87, indicating a neutral to positive attitude, while the mean score of their writing achievement was 55.91, which falls into the “fair” category. The correlation result showed that r = -0.131, indicating a very weak and negative correlation, which is statistically insignificant. This finding suggests that students’ positive attitudes toward writing do not necessarily translate into higher writing performance. It implies that other factors, such as motivation, language proficiency, and writing practice, may play a more influential role. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to foster students’ enthusiasm for writing by providing constructive feedback, creating an enjoyable learning atmosphere, and giving more opportunities for authentic writing practice.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low level of critical thinking skills and the lack of student awareness regarding waste issues in their surrounding environment. One of the contributing factors is the use of learning materials that are not aligned with students' needs. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a teaching module oriented toward the Problem-Based Learning model, supported by the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) method, to improve the critical thinking skills of students in Phase B. This study adopts the Design and Development (D&D) method using the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, questionnaires, and tests, with both qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The initial design of the module includes components such as the front cover, preface, table of contents, general information, core competencies, learning activities, conclusion, appendices, and back cover. Expert validation was conducted twice: before and after revision. The feasibility scores increased after revision, with assessments from subject matter experts improving from 94.2% to 99.4%, media experts from 91.4% to 94.8%, and learning experts from 86.4% to 90.6%. The overall average increased from 90.6% to 94.9%. Implementation of the module with fourth-grade Phase B students showed improved learning outcomes. The average pretest score increased from 49.7 to 80.9 in the posttest. The N-Gain score of 0.61 indicates a “Moderate” improvement. Therefore, this PBL-oriented module using the 3R method is effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This Tiga Bintang Home Industry has used Islamic business ethics, in accordance with the Islamic ethics that have been implemented by the leaders of the Tiga Bintang Home Industry. Therefore, the Tiga Bintang Home Industry has been confirmed to be good at producing it. With this Three Bintang Home Industry, it provides good service and the people around the Tiga Bintang Home Industry feel the benefits. This study aims to answer the question, how is the Implementation of Islamic Business Ethics in the production of Tape Tiga Bintang Kescal Sukosari Bondowoso and what are the factors that become obstacles in production. Tape Three Stars Shells Sukosari Bondowoso. The research method used is field research or commonly called qualitative research. Data collection techniques used are interviews, direct observation of production activities, and documentation. The research results obtained are that the Tiga Bintang Home Industry Tape has implemented Islamic ethical principles in its production activities, namely: ihsan, itqon, faith, taqwa, istiqomah and maslahah and working in a halal field but an ethical barrier that is not optimally applied. Namely, istiqomah because raw materials are an obstacle to the production factor, the Three Star Tape home industry, and there are supporting factors that are a separate guideline for the three star home industry, namely good human resources, that is what makes this Home Industry more and more customers and growing because it is careful in choosing HR, so it is really good in terms of Management, Service and Implementing Islamic Ethical Values.
