Abstract

Fisheries is an important sector as a source of nutrition, income, and livelihood support for Ghanaian citizens. However, the Ghanaian fishing sector tends to be threatened by a number of problems which are mainly caused by illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities, in particular the practice commonly known as “Saiko” (transshipment). In response to this, a local Ghanaian non-governmental organization, Hen Mpoano, have attempted to advocate for the importance of eradicating Saiko practices in order to ensure the sustainability of the Ghanaian fisheries sector and formed a transnational network with the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) as an international non- governmental organization engaged in the humanitarian and environmental fields to advocate for the issue of Saiko practices in the global realm so that it can put pressure on the Ghanaian government to prioritize efforts to eradicate Saiko practices in its government agenda. This study aims to provide an explanation regarding the transnational advocacy strategies carried out by EJF using the conceptual framework of the Transnational Advocacy Network introduced by Keck and Sikkink. The findings of this study reveal that the transnational advocacy efforts carried out by EJF are carried out by implementing information politics, symbolic politics, leverage politics, and accountability politics.

Abstract

Tin smuggling is a main problem in the tin mining sector in Indonesia during 2009-2014 even though there are various regulations governing these tin mining activities. This research was conducted to determine the cause of the illegal practices in the tin mining still exist until nowadays. By using an explanatory research, this research aims to explain what happened, how the tin smuggling occurred, and the effects of the tin minning polices towards society. The logic of this research was formed by the analysis from two perspectives which are interrelated: the theory of economic crimes with the neoclassical approach and compliance theory. From these perspectives, the authors found the weaknesses of the policies, such as; influences of the actor’s rationality, ambiguity and temporal limitations of the policies, and the counterproductive impact of the policies on socio-economic conditions of the society that ultimately affect the rampant practice of illegal mining and tin smuggling during 2009-2014 in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to find out why Donald Trump ignored the congress in selling weapons to Saudi Arabia. The majority of the congress wants Trump to stop selling his weapons to Saudi Arabia because of controversies about Saudi Arabia such as ignoring human rights in the Yemen conflict and the possible role of the Saudi government in killing Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist. This study uses poliheuristic theory and qualitative methods in analyzing. In poliheuristics, leaders will eliminate alternative choices that are not in accordance with their noncompensatory principles. In general, the noncompensatory is a choice that does not harm the domestic political status, but the principle of noncompensatory can differ between leaders. An influential factor is the character of the leader in determining foreign policy which causes leaders to tend to fight their political constraints. The results of this study are that Trump has a task-oriented leader character and has high confidence in his ability to cope with events. This character influenced his foreign policy making to ignore his political obstacles, so Trump dared to make the decision to continue selling military weapons without congressional approval.
