Abstract

Language interference or disorder often occurs in individuals who have acquired proficiency in multiple languages, including Japanese language learners at the college level. This research aims to analyze the interference of the Indonesian language in the use of aizuchi (backchanneling) in Japanese by Japanese language students in Medan, Indonesia. The study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data consists of transcriptions of conversations between students and lecturers that contain instances of aizuchi interference. Data collection is conducted through observation using techniques such as eavesdropping and note-taking. The collected data is analyzed through data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the interference of the Indonesian language in aizuchi in Japanese primarily occurs at the lexical level, specifically in the utilization of Indonesian words as aizuchi in Japanese conversations. An example of this interference is replacing the Japanese word "hai" with the Indonesian word "iya." The students' experiences influence the identified interference in learning foreign languages and cultural factors. This research contributes to a better understanding of the interference of the Indonesian language in the use of aizuchi in Japanese and provides insights for teaching the Japanese language at the tertiary level.

Abstract

The linguistic landscape, or "schoolscape," in public elementary schools in Medan, Indonesia, is a relatively new area of study in linguistics. This descriptive qualitative research explores language use within the school environment, considering its social and cultural aspects. The study aims to analyze the linguistic forms, usage, and functions present in the linguistic landscape of these schools. Data from photographs capturing linguistic units was collected from four public elementary schools in Medan. This study employed systematic sampling, specifically purposive sampling, to select public elementary schools in Medan based on criteria related to the city's main areas with diverse linguistic units. The findings reveal various linguistic forms, including acronyms, words, phrases, sentences, and monolingual and bilingual texts. Language within the linguistic landscape serves informational and symbolic functions, providing information to readers and reflecting the relationship between language and power through linguistic signs associated with local leaders. While Indonesian is the dominant language used, there is a lack of representation of specific ethnic or cultural identities. The findings have global implications, revealing language's role in education and its impact on social and cultural dynamics. Understanding linguistic forms, usage, and functions provides valuable insights for education policies promoting language diversity, skills, and cultural inclusivity. The study suggests enriching the linguistic landscape by considering the use of local or minority languages existing in the region. This study contributes to understanding linguistic landscapes in Indonesian schools and highlights the importance of incorporating diverse languages to promote language proficiency and cultural preservation.

Abstract

Since the paradigm for teaching reading has shifted from traditional literacy to multimodal literacy, prior research has demonstrated that augmented reality (AR) technology can successfully improve conventional literacy in general language learning. Only a few research, particularly in English for Nurse courses, have examined the potential of Augmented Reality (AR) technology to improve multimodal literacy in ESP learning. The purpose of this study was to determine how AR technology affects nursing students' multimodal literacy in ESP learning and how they communicate with others through a variety of multimodal modalities to improve their multimodal literacy in medical English. Fifty nursing students enrolled in English for Nursing courses participated in the study to share their experiences using this multimodal ESP learning survey to improve their medical English literacy. In the auditory mode, background music and sound effects were used to elicit strong emotions and improve immersive experiences. The results also showed a significant improvement in nursing students' multimodal English literacy skills when the material was created for a location-based augmented reality application. The findings revealed that nursing students used three modes in AR (visual, imaging, and animations). The three modes were used to help viewers comprehend complex material, give them specific ideas, and encourage participation.

With a dataset of 500 helmet and velst images for deltelksi which will be categorised into 4 classes namely hellelm, velst, no-hellelm, no-velst. The dataset used is 500 data, which is then divided into three datasets, namely: training data as much as 70%, validation data as much as 20%, and telst data as much as 10%, from the dataselt telrselbut the best results of testing data values from 50 dataselt the accuracy results obtained are 0.98. It is hoped that with the use of Meltode and accuracy results using Yolo v8, it can be used in companies by detecting Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) with fast and accurate results, so that it can be applied in monitoring the use of PPE in manufacturing companies to reduce the risk of work accidents in manufacturing companies

Abstract

This study investigates the use of Japanese honorific language variants (keigo)—teineigo, kenjougo, and sonkeigo—among university students studying Japanese, emphasizing the progression of ability throughout academic levels. The study intends to examine patterns in honorific usage and explore factors affecting students’ application of keigo. A Japanese Literature program was executed utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach and sociolinguistic theory, resulting in data gathering through questionnaires administered to 30 students (10 sophomores, 10 juniors, and 10 seniors). The data indicate that 80% of sophomores utilize teineigo, whereas 40% of juniors employ both sonkeigo and at least 40% of another form. Senior citizens favor sonkeigo and kenjougo due to their extensive cultural-linguistic understanding. Key characteristics encompass formal engagement with elders, maintaining esteemed standards, and readiness for professional settings. These results underscore the imperative for keigo training that is customized to the specific developmental stage of learners, prioritizing pragmatic skill and cultural awareness. The study advocates incorporating sociolinguistic contexts into Japanese language courses to connect classroom instruction with practical communication.
