Abstract

This research aimed to produce a valid and practical product in the form of a student worksheet using the Indonesian version of the Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach in the classroom context with an orientation toward students’ conceptual understanding and to figure out the potential effect of the student worksheet developed. It is a piece of development research under the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model. Data collection was performed using documentation, a questionnaire, and a test. The object of this research was the development of a student worksheet using the PMRI approach within the classroom context with an orientation toward students’ conceptual understanding. Meanwhile, the subjects of the research were students of grade X of SMAN 06 Banyuasin. The research results showed that the student worksheet produced was declared valid (with an average score of 90.83), practical (based on the students’ questionnaire responses, with a score of 79.65), and potentially influential to a high degree (based on the students’ test results, with a percentage of 84%). Therefore, the student worksheet that was developed using the PMRI approach within the classroom context with an orientation toward students’ conceptual understanding was worth using in the learning process.DOI : https://doi.org/10.22342/jpm.16.2.14854.203-214

Abstract

Purpose: The present study explores how pre-service teachers engage with Jamovi, an open-source platform for statistical analysis, during their study of descriptive statistics. It investigates students’ perceptions regarding its functionality, its impact on conceptual understanding, and the external conditions that shape their experiences in a digital learning context. Method: Employing a concurrent mixed-methods approach, the research involved 72 undergraduate students enrolled in a teacher training program in Indonesia. Data were gathered using structured questionnaires complemented by classroom observations conducted across seven instructional sessions where Jamovi was actively integrated into the teaching process. Findings: Students demonstrated strong engagement and generally favorable perceptions toward Jamovi, citing its user-friendly interface and real-time visual feedback as major advantages. The study also found that students' experiences were influenced by factors such as the availability of instructional guidance and reliable internet connectivity. Significance: The findings indicate that Jamovi offers a viable alternative for enhancing statistical instruction, particularly for learners with minimal prior exposure to analytical tools. By lowering technical barriers, it supports independent learning and could be instrumental in developing data literacy among prospective educators. This research highlights the value of adopting accessible digital tools alongside pedagogical support to improve student outcomes in statistics education.

Abstract

The flexibility of mathematical thinking among prospective mathematics teachers remains relatively low, primarily due to learning approaches that do not meaningfully connect mathematical concepts with real-world contexts. This study aims to design and implement a STEM-based learning trajectory on the topic of parabolic equations to foster the development of mathematical thinking flexibility in prospective teachers. The research employs a design research approach consisting of two stages: a pilot experiment to test and refine the learning trajectory, and a teaching experiment to implement and evaluate its effectiveness. The participants were students who had completed an Analytical Geometry course. Data were collected through activity sheets, Desmos documentation, video recordings, and interviews. Data were analyzed using a retrospective analysis method, which involved three main steps: (1) organizing data from various sources, (2) conducting within-case analysis to trace students' thought processes throughout each activity, and (3) synthesizing patterns across cases to identify the development of mathematical flexibility. The results show that the learning trajectory consisting of four main activities: video analysis, elevation angle experiments, graphing parabolas using Desmos, and determining parabolic equations effectively facilitated the development of mathematical flexibility in three aspects: representational, conceptual, and procedural. Students demonstrated the ability to shift between different representations, understand the interconnections among mathematical concepts, and adapt problem-solving strategies to contextual situations. The teaching experiment also revealed increased student engagement, higher quality of discussion, and a greater diversity of strategies employed. This study recommends the integration of real-world contexts, such as football throw-ins, to support STEM-based mathematics instruction aimed at developing flexible mathematical thinking in prospective teachers.

Abstract

The study focuses on improving higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in mathematics students using a Desmos-assisted planar analytic geometry course. Analytic geometry, which is essential for understanding geometric properties using analytic methods, requires students to develop problem-solving, analysis, assessment, and creativity abilities. However, current educational practices fall short of acquiring these abilities due to insufficient instructional techniques, textbooks, and a lack of integration with information and communication technologies. To address these shortcomings, the study proposes a Desmos-assisted textbook meant to increase students' HOTS through the use of interactive Desmos platform tools such as graphic depiction, experimentation, simulation, and collaborative learning. The textbook development followed the PLOMP model, which included preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment phases, ensuring the textbook's validity and practicality through reiterated evaluations. The findings show that the textbook is highly valid and practical for instructional purposes, improving students' knowledge of mathematical concepts and ability to engage in HOTS processes. Despite some difficulties with HOTS-related practice questions, generally student feedback was positive, emphasizing the textbook's function in supporting a deeper understanding of analytic geometry and encouraging problem-solving skills. The study indicates that integrating technology such as Desmos into mathematics education can greatly contribute to the development of students' HOTS, and recommends its use in teaching techniques as well as additional research on its implementation in educational contexts.
