This paper investigated factors influencing studentsâ€™ pronunciation. Pronunciation is one of the important aspects of the learning of English. When mastering English pronunciation, many non-native English speakers have difficulty pronouncing certain words that contain the phonemes not used in their native languages. This paper also reported several aspects that might influence pronunciation. The pronunciation aspect investigated in this research paper was the English interdental consonants [Î¸] and [Ã°], which are not available in the Indonesian language sound system. This qualitative research used interviews as a method for collecting primary data. The researchers interviewed twenty participants from the English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, related to the pronunciation of the two interdental consonant sounds. The findings showed that the mother tongue, age, and teacher instruction on target language exposures affected the ELESP studentsâ€™ (mis)pronunciation. Pedagogical implications of the findings are English teachers can assist their students in overcoming pronunciation challenges involving the two interdental consonants and pronunciation textbook writers should Â provide more Â pronunciation practices focusing on [Î¸] and [Ã°] sounds.

This paper aims at analyzing how gender-specific neologisms in Indonesian are formed and how they conceptualize gender in the community. Neologisms containing gender marked features from online media are extracted. They are classified based on the forms and the word formation processes. The researchers conduct a careful examination on how the semantic components in the neologisms conceptualize gender in the society. The researchers categorized the word formation processes of gender marked neologisms, consisting of 92 data samples, into seven word formation processes, starting from the least up to the most frequent processes, namely metaphor, reverse, acronym, diminutive, initialism, borrowing and blend/clipping compound. The results showed that blends or clipping compounds were formed from English, Indonesian and local languages, such as Javenese, as in the English-Indonesian bohay (â€˜bodyâ€™ and aduhay â€˜sexyâ€™) to refer to a â€˜sexy female bodyâ€™. These new words semantically ground on social dimensions carrying several attributes, namely: emotional, financial, physical, sexual, and financial attributes. Instead of serving as an act of empowerment, some neologisms, as argued in the findings, reflect negative stigma to particular genders.Â

In the IELTS writing preparation class, the teacher can facilitate the students by integrating the stylistic approach in building writing studentsâ€™ style. Not only achieving the primary goals in English proficiency by focusing on the writing style, but students can also comfortably share their ideas in their style. The paper examined the stylistics integrated material in IELTS writing through noun phrase construction. This study employed a qualitative method and a descriptive design. The data were collected using structured observation sheets as the instrument and were analyzed stylistically. Writing materials and the writing results of 12 students at an English course were collected. Results showed that stylistics was used in phrase complexity and ambiguity as a part of writing strategies. It was supported by the three dominant types of noun phrases produced by the students in their writing: determiner + head, determiner + pre-modifier + head, and pre-modifier + head, as the evidence of the implementation of integrated material in IELTS writing. For the noun phrase uses, the students could vary the noun phrases in their complexity, function, and type in their tests, though the variations in each of those aspects were still low. Implications of the results are stylistics could be implemented in language learning-teaching activities in general. It could encourage students to develop their writing style for self-expression and more explicit writing products.

Sentence patterns and types play a crucial role in helping writers make their articles attractive. However, few studies analyzed the sentence patterns and types used in news articles. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the sentence patterns and types used in shaping news articles. The researchers used a syntactic analysis to examine the sentences. The data were collected from ten BBC news articles published in October 2020. The purposive sampling was used, and the data gathering instrument was structured observation sheets. The gathered data were calculated using percentages. The results showed five sentence patterns used, namely S+V, S+LV+SC, S+V+O, S+V+DO+OC, and S+V+IO+DO. It was also found that four sentence types, namely simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, were used. Among the used sentence patterns, S+V+O was the most frequent (42%), and the most frequent sentence type was the complex sentence (52.6%).

This paper investigated the problems of understanding basic or fundamental tenses in English grammar (the present tense, present continuous tense, present future tense, and present future continuous) that are faced by the first semester students of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Basic tenses in English grammar play a decisive role in various aspects related to learning English as the target language. Accordingly, it is essential to conduct a study on the issues of basic tenses in order to assist students to overcome their grammatical problems. Data were collected through questionnaires that were emailed to the participants. Results showed that the students had difficulties in producing or analyzing the present continuous tense, the present perfect tense and the present perfect continuous tense. The first semester students also faced difficulty in remembering the formula of each tense, admitting that they did not review the basic tenses regularly and the students found it difficult to comprehend their grammar lessons well in the classroom.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2018.020206

This article aimed to investigate the ESL Senior High School student’s perception of Morphological Awareness Instruction and the students’ vocabulary and the significant differences of students who are trained using Morphological Awareness Instruction to enhance their reading comprehension. Two research questions were formulated, namely: First, how are the ESL Senior High School students’ understanding of the application of morphological awareness instruction to enhance their vocabulary and reading comprehension. Secondly, what are the differences of students who are trained using Morphological Awareness Instruction to enhance their vocabulary and reading comprehension with those who are not? To answer these questions, an experimental research method was implemented. The research sample consisted of 60 students of a Senior High School in Pleret, Bantul, Yogyakarta, who were selected using two phases of random sampling. The data set of questionnaires and tests were used to collect the data. The independent sample t-test was used to analyze the data. The results showed that the Morphological Awareness Instruction significantly improved students’ vocabulary skills and their reading comprehension.

This paper explored the mispronunciations produced by Indonesian graduate students in their presentation projects. The data were collected from presentation projects of 11 graduate students of the English Education Master’s Program of Sanata Dharma University. The researchers used a document analysis as a technique to analyze the data. Results showed that 89 mispronunciations existed in the presentation projects. The mispronunciations were categorized into three types of errors, namely: 26 mispronunciations belonged to the first type, the problems in the pronunciation of non-native sound; 36 mispronunciations belonged to the second type, the carry-over of pronunciation regularities from the mother tongue (L1); and 27 mispronunciations belonged to the third type, the overgeneralizations of target language (L2) regularities. It is expected that the findings can become a stepping stone for graduate students to improve their English pronunciation.

Expressing what we want or feel to others can be done directly and indirectly. But often, in some conversations, people fail to use directness. For communication to flow smoothly, maxims are utilized in discourse. On the other hand, people frequently fail to respect the maxim to convey implicit meaning, known as maxim flouting. This paper aimed to determine which maxims were performed by the main character Mike Lawford in the movie Pay the Ghost. The researchers used a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the data. The researchers obtained the data by downloading and watching the film in the past. This study showed that the main character in this movie fulfilled 59 maxims consisting of 20 times using the maxim of relation, the maxim of quality 18 times, the maxim of manner 16 times, and the maxim of quantity five times. So, here the main character in this movie mostly used the maxim or relation in his conversation, and he rarely used the maxim of quantity. The main character also flouted 41 maxims which consisted of the maxim of quantity 20 times, the maxim of manner nine times, the maxim of quality seven times, and the maxim of relation five times. The main character in this movie mainly floated the maxim of quantity in his conversation.

This paper investigated English swear words used in a novel. This study was urgent to conduct because using swear words is a natural behavior in communication which is indicated by the employment of certain swear words to express emotion, to reduce frustrated feeling, and to show solidarity to others. Two research points to resolve were as follows: what types of swearing which the main character used and what motives for swearing in the novel. Data, consisting of 46 swear words, were collected from the Antologi Rasa novel written by Ika Natassa, and were investigated using a content analysis. Findings showed the following: 26 (56.5%) occurrences of auxiliary swearing, 12 (26.1%) of expletives swearing, 4 (8.7%) of abusive swearing, and 4 (8.7 %) of humorous swearing. Three motives for the main character to swear were as follows: psychological motives (23 occurrences or 50.0 %), social motives (19 or 41.30%), and linguistic motives (4 or 8.70%).

This paper investigated frequent collocations used by English learners. Specifically, it is a corpus-based study which focuses on the frequencies of 15 pairs of adjective-noun and noun-adjective collocations. The frequency was examined in two corpora, namely the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and the British National Corpus managed by Brigham Young University (BYU-BNC). The collocations are presented in the form of pairs to give the comparisons of frequencies between frequently used collocations and less frequently used ones, as seen in the corpora although they have a similar meaning. The present study aims to help English learners to be familiar with the more appropriate word choice used in their writing and speaking.
