Figurative language are exposed in British Council LearnEnglish Kids stories. The use of figurative language in the stories required interpretation to understand its literal meaning. Ten stories of British Council LearnEnglish Kids were chosen to be analysed. The objective is to interpret the figurative language into the literal meanings, aiding young readers’ understanding. Descriptive qualitative as a method to write the findings and document analysis as an approach to analyse the data were employed to address the research question. In total, twenty-six figurative language were found in ten printed British Council LearnEnglish Kids stories. Limited figurative language was found since the authors mostly used a direct language to avoid confusion. The figurative language found were eighteen personifications, six hyperboles, one irony, and one apostrophe. Personification is the predominant type of figurative language. This study contributes to help readers, particularly young readers to understand the figurative language available in the stories provided by British Council LearnEnglish Kids website.

Morphological awareness is crucial in EFL vocabulary acquisition, particularly in understanding complex word formations. This research analyzes the morphological behavior of prefixes inter- and intra- to determine how their meanings and grammatical roles shift across different word classes. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the researchers collected 345 lexical entries (183 for inter- and 162 for intra-) from the Oxford English Dictionary. The analysis focused on word class changes and semantic formations. The results show distinct characteristics: inter- exhibits broader morphological flexibility, forming verbs, nouns, and adjectives that describe reciprocal relationships, spatial distance, and social relations. Conversely, intra- demonstrates structural consistency, predominantly forming technical adjectives referring to internal locations within scientific contexts. These findings highlight the significant role of prefixes in vocabulary enrichment and the necessity of understanding word class nuances. Practically, this study suggests that teaching strategies should differentiate between the communicative nature of inter- and the technical specificity of intra-. This research contributes a morphology-based framework for teaching English vocabulary in EFL contexts.

One of the paramount aspects of acquiring a language is mastering the vocabulary. One way to enrich our vocabulary is by familiarizing ourselves with word formation process. This study aimed to investigate studentsâ€™ familiarity with a word formation process called conversion. This was a descriptive quantitative study. Using Google Forms, the researchers distributed a questionnaire containing statements on conversion to collect data. The participants were 10 first year students of the English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. The researchers calculated the studentsâ€™ correct and incorrect answers. Results showed that most of the students were unfamiliar with conversion, one of the word formation processes, especially the conversion involving verbs to nouns (50%) and adjectives to nouns (50%). Most students were knowledgeable about the conversion from nouns to verbs (80%). One of the implications is that ELESP students study conversion, one of the word formation processes in English, to enrich their vocabulary items.

Fillers are utterances or phrases that are used in speaking to fill in the moment of silence to connect thoughts or ideas. This paper investigated the types and functions of fillers used by Emma Watson in her speeches. The researchers formulated two questions to be resolved. First, what are the types of fillers used in Emma Watson’s speeches? Second, what are the functions of filler words in the speeches? Data, consisting of 93 occurrences of fillers, were collected from Emma Watson’s speech scripts in three videos. To solve the research questions, the researchers used the descriptive qualitative approach and discourse analysis. Results showed that Watson used two types of fillers, namely unlexicalized filled pauses (71 occurrences) and lexical filled pauses (22 occurrences) and five functions of fillers, namely hesitating, empathizing, mitigating, editing term and time-creating devices. AbstrakFiller atau kata pengisi merupakan ujaran atau frase yang digunakan dalam jeda percakapan untuk menghubungkan gagasan atau ide berikutnya. Makalah ini menyelidiki jenis dan fungsi kata pengisi yang digunakan oleh Emma Watson dalam pidatonya. Para peneliti merumuskan dua permasalahan. Pertama, apa jenis kata pengisi yang digunakan dalam pidato Emma Watson? Kedua, apa fungsi dari kata pengisi dalam pidato Emma Watson? Data, yang terdiri atas 93 kata pengisi, dikumpulkan dari tiga naskah video pidato Emma Watson. Untuk menjawab kedua permasalahan dalam studi ini, para peneliti menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dan analisis wacana. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa Watson menggunakan dua jenis kata pengisi, yaitu jeda terisi non-leksikal (71 kali) dan jeda terisi leksikal (22 kali), serta lima fungsi kata pengisi, yaitu sebagai perangkat keragu-raguan, berempati, mengurangi efek, memperbaiki istilah, dan menambah waktu.

Academic Writing of EFL Students’ Undergraduate Theses: A Discourse Marker Analysis Marcellina Haninda; Barli Bram

Writing the background is obligatory in undergraduate theses, and discourse markers are essential to creating cohesion and coherence in academic writing. Thus, this paper aimed to investigate discourse markers used by the undergraduate students in writing their thesis backgrounds and the extent of accuracy of the use of DMs in the students’ thesis backgrounds. Data were collected from 28 undergraduate thesis backgrounds written by the students of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta batch 2016, who graduated between May 2020 and January 2021. Descriptive research was employed, and the data were examined using document analysis. Results showed that elaborative markers were used 763 times (74.58%) and followed by reason markers 95 times (9.29%), inferential markers 85 times (8.31%), and contrastive markers 80 times (7.82%). In general, the EFL students used DMs accurately in their thesis backgrounds. Some DMs were, however, used inappropriately. It is essential that the EFL students better understand how to use DMs appropriately when writing their thesis backgrounds.

Maxim Violation in “Dilbert” Comic Strips Alfonsa Vina Kanasya; Barli Bram

This research investigates the conversations in the “Dilbert” comic written by Scott Adams. The data came from the dialogues in the comic “Dilbert.” They were analyzed using Gricean Maxims of Conversations. This qualitative study used content analysis as the data of this research is text. This research aimed to analyze the maxims that were violated in this comic to create humor and the reason why the characters were violating the maxims during conversations. Fifteen comic strips from the website dilbert.com were chosen and analyzed. The results show that the characters mostly violate maxims of relevance since they need to come up with an excuse for the given questions or avoid accusation. They also violate the maxim of quality as they sometimes lie too in order to get out of the situation or accusation.

Positive Politeness Strategies Used by Parents in Peppa Pig Official YouTube Channel Natasha Ayalus Yoan Yola Yolanda; Barli Bram

Parents are the first ones responsible for their children’s speech. Bad and good children’s speech behavior in society would be considered the results of their parents’ teachings. This research was conducted to analyze this phenomenon by exploring the positive politeness used by parents while communicating in front of their children. It showed how parents construct their speech to exemplify good speech behavior to their children. This research used qualitative research, specified to content analysis method to analyze the data. The data were collected from the video entitled “Peppa Pig Official Channel, Peppa Pig Adds Pineapple in Her Pizza” from Peppa Pig Official YouTube Channel. The results showed that the most strategy used was the ‘include both speakers and hearers in the activity’ which appeared in 36 out of 319 utterances. It showed Daddy Pig’s and Mommy Pig’s efforts to promote the politeness of appreciating others’ existence through their speech to their children. Furthermore, all the positive politeness strategies were used by Daddy Pig and Mommy Pig as the parents in Peppa Pig Video. Therefore, this video was recommended for parents to see how they can construct their language politely while speaking with their children. It will help children to get used to speaking politely and appropriately.

This article investigated speech functions and prepositional phrases on shampoo slogans. The objectives of this study were to explore the types of speech functions and to examine prepositional phrases on picture shampoo slogans. The data, consisting of 56 shampoo slogans and 11 picture shampoo slogans, were collected from the internet. The method was descriptive qualitative. Results showed that the statement occurred 52 times (92.85%), command, thrice (5.35%), and question once (1.78%). Afterwards, 11 pictures of shampoo slogans were analyzed to categorize speech functions. The findings showed three speech functions, namely a statement, question, and command. The percentages were the statement (81.81%) and command (18.18%). The types of prepositional phrases were analyzed based on the 56 shampoo slogans. The percentages were "for" (29.03%), "of" (24.19%), "to" (17.74%), then "with" (12.90%), "as" (3.22%), "in, about" (3.22%), and "from" (1.61%).

The development of online learning and digital technologies has influenced the formation of EFL teacher identity. This literature review investigates the development of EDL teacher identity during online learning. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and subtleties of EFL teacher identity construction in the online learning context. The selected studies were collected through a systematic approach. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the unique challenges encountered by EFL instructors during online learning, their adaptation and transformation in identity construction, and the pedagogical implications for effective online language teaching. The results emphasized the importance of addressing challenges, supporting EFL teachers in professional development, and implementing effective teaching methods in online language learning. These findings contribute to the improvement of EFL teacher preparation, pedagogical practices, and online learning support systems.

This study investigated the effectiveness of interactive methods in enhancing vocabulary acquisition among English as a Second Language (ESL) students. Focusing on innovative teaching strategies, the research examined how interactive activities such as games, role-playing, and technology-assisted learning affect vocabulary retention and use. The research question is "What is the impact of the interactive method on the students' vocabulary enhancement?" There were 100 students of Marine Cruise Yogyakarta, Sukoharjo Branch, who were selected for this research. The data collection method was mixed method through open-ended questionnaire, observation, and interview. Descriptive narrative research design was used to analyze the data through triangulation. The result showed that interactive method significantly contribute to vocabulary enhancement in learning English as a Second Language (ESL) especialy in; 1) student engagement, 2) integration of technology, 3) collaborative learning. This research provides valuable insights for educators seeking to implement effective strategies for teaching vocabulary in ESL classrooms.
