Abstract

Language and linguistics are vital in peoples daily conversation. However, because of some causes, there are some misunderstandings or pragmatic failures which may appear in communication among people. Many studies have looked into the pragmatic failures between native speakers and non-native speakers but this study investigates pragmatic failures in Netflix TV drama series 13 Reasons Why. It aims to discover pragmatic failures that happened in the drama and their causes. To gather the data, the researchers watched the series and highlighted some events that contained pragmatic failures. Then, the researchers used three steps of data analysis: gather and organize, categorize, and analyze the findings. The findings showed that there were 25 pragmatic failures that happened in the drama. They were caused by five reasons, namely failure in understanding others intentions, failures in understanding others state, denials to the reality, trauma, and failures in understanding a situation.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a crucial factor in language learning and it can be problematic for bilingual young learners of the preoperational stage. Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit missionary to China, was able to teach Chinese by using and developing an ancient mnemonic method called the memory palace technique, which then became a widely recognized language learning technique. The current researchers sought to discover whether or not the principles of Matteo Ricci’s memory palace technique were still relevant to today’s language learning context and applicable in designing English vocabulary learning media. The present research focused on the detailed aspects of the technique and to the guiding principles of educational media to learn English vocabulary items. The current research produced a prototype for a set of vocabulary learning media that could later be implemented, tested, evaluated and developed by other instructors and future researchers interested in the subject.

Abstract

Online mass media apply metaphors in their headlines to influence the public’s minds regarding a particular issue. Drawing on Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) Conceptual Metaphorical Theory on understanding, this paper aimed to explore the Coronavirus through metaphors in three notable online mass media headlines in Indonesia and internationally. A qualitative approach was used to analyze the data. The data, consisting of 30 headlines concerning Coronavirus, were collected from headlines of three online mass media and then classified and mapped based on the Conceptual Metaphorical Theory. The process of data analysis was adapted from Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) to gain in-depth insights into the use of metaphorical expressions in mass online media. The findings showed that 10 types of metaphors were used in 30 headlines. The two most frequent conceptual metaphors of Coronavirus were Coronavirus as War and Coronavirus as Enemy. Accordingly, online mass media intended to strongly describe the danger of Coronavirus through metaphorical headlines. It may undoubtedly raise people’s fear and anxiety of Coronavirus. Nevertheless, metaphors in online mass media headlines could further function as a preventive rhetorical tool to educate people about Coronavirus as well as equip them with the knowledge to protect from the virus. In conclusion, the metaphors in international and Indonesian online mass media headlines were able to either provide a negative or positive viewpoint toward Coronavirus.

Abstract

This paper investigated the Thai students’ mastery of parts of speech in English. It is urgent to conduct this study because it would explore the students’ difficulties in identifying parts of speech when producing grammatical sentences and then assist them in tackling the language challenges. The data consisted of 30 written reflections produced by students belonging to two classes and were collected from all of the 30 students of batch 2018 pursuing their Bachelor of Arts degrees at Xavier Learning Community (XLC) in Chiang Rai, Thailand. This error analysis study examined the (mis)use of the four main parts of speech or syntactic categories, namely adjectives, adverbs, nouns and verbs in written reflections of XLC students. Results showed that in general the students still faced challenges in recognizing and using parts of speech grammatically in writing reflections. The highest number of mistakes involved adjectives, namely 32 times (46.37%), and consecutively followed by nouns, 18 (26.08%), verbs, 15 (21.73%) and adverbs, 4 (5.79%).

Abstract

This study investigated lexical richness in research articles published by writers of ESL and EFL in the ASEAN countries. The question was whether there were any significant similarities and differences in terms of lexical richness in research articles between these two groups. The researchers employed three different lexical measures to find out the answer: (a) lexical density (how many content words were used), (b) lexical diversity (how wide-ranging words were used), and (c) lexical sophistication (how many advanced and unusual words were used). The primary data consisted of 40 research articles published by two ESL countries, namely Malaysia and the Philippines, and the other two EFL countries: Indonesia and Thailand and were taken from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE). The researchers analyzed the data by utilizing three measurement tools namely CLAWS Tagger, Moving-Average-Type-Token-Ratio (MATTR), and VocabProfiler, and compared the results between ESL and EFL using the Mann-Whitney U test. Interestingly, despite different total tokens in several aspects, the data analysis results indicated no significant difference between ESL and EFL writers in terms of lexical richness and how they employed vocabulary in their research articles. This study further discussed factors influencing the use of vocabulary by two groups and concluded with limitations of the study and future research directions.

Abstract

Reading is an acquired skill needed for obtaining knowledge. To be successful in reading, one should adopt certain attitudes to ensure the reading activity's fruitfulness. This correlational study investigates the possible significant relationship between reading attitude and L2 achievement. The subjects of this study were 47 vocational school students in Yogyakarta. Samples were chosen using purposive sampling with X graders and XI graders of a vocational school. The data were collected through a questionnaire, interview sessions, and an English exam. The hypothesis of this research was the more positive the students’ attitude was, the higher were L2 achievements of the students. The writers conducted a Pearson correlation computation to analyze the correlation of the obtained data. The findings showed that the students' reading attitude was positive and the L2 achievements were high, but the reading attitude correlated negatively and weakly to L2 achievements. Other factors affected L2 achievements as well. ESL teachers should be concerned about their students’ reading attitudes
