The paper investigated common grammatical errors produced by Indonesian university students of English as a foreign language when writing their undergraduate research proposals. Accordingly, an urgent research question to resolve was what common grammatical errors are made by the seventh semester students of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University in writing Chapter One of their research proposals? To answer the research question, the researchers conducted a content analysis. The researchers analysed students’ research proposals, focusing on grammatical issues identified in the first chapter. Results showed that the errors were omission (content and grammatical morpheme), addition (double marking, regularization, and simple addition), misinformation (regularization errors, archi-forms, and alternating forms), misordering, parallelism and diction. The top three errors were successively omission (38.15 per cent), addition (21.97 per cent) and parallelism (18.5 per cent).

Abstract

Mastering sentence structure for English Education Master’s Program (EEMP) students is obligatory considering their level of education as graduate students, who would become English teachers, lecturers, or researchers in the future. Therefore, major errors in constructing English sentences are no longer expected to happen at this level. This study investigated grammatical errors in sentences produced by EEMP students in their weekly written reflections in their Educational Psychology class. Fifty reflections of the first semester of EEMP graduate students were collected from assignments given by the lecturer of Educational Psychology class. This research employed document analysis as the method and the data analysis was conducted based on error categories. The results showed that the students made 106 morphological errors consisting of omission, addition, alternating form, archi-form, misordering, and 75 syntactical errors, including the use of the subject-verb agreement, preposition, conjunction, punctuation, and parallel structures. Keywords: error analysis; grammatical error; sentence structure; reflection

Abstract

This paper analyzed the lexical density of the adjective and noun clauses in an English textbook for senior high school students in Indonesia. It aimed to discover whether or not the textbook was suitable for the students in terms of lexical density. The researchers employed a content analysis approach to analyze data. There were 116 sentences, containing adjective and noun clauses, which were investigated. The researchers implemented the lexical density theory and the lexical density indicators to determine the average level of the lexical density measurements. Results showed that there were three lexical density levels found in those adjective and noun clauses. The three levels were low, medium, and high. The average level of the lexical density obtained from the adjective and noun clauses in the textbook was 47%, which was categorized as low lexical density. Thus, the researchers concluded that the English textbook for the tenth-grade students published by the Indonesian Government was appropriate for the students.

Abstract

Songs are increasingly used by teachers to teach English because students can learn many things from songs, such as vocabulary items and figurative language. However, sometimes the use of songs in the classroom only covers the surface of the discussion. Students need to be able to understand songs deeper by learning the figurative language. It is not easy to understand figurative language because people can interpret the meaning of it freely based on the context. Learning figurative language becomes important because it is found to give four beneficial aspects to students. Therefore, this study analyzed figurative language used in three songs in “Student’s Book 2 for Senior High School Students Grade XI”, which can be used by students to learn about songs deeper by understanding figurative language easily. This qualitative study can also be a consideration for the teachers and those who design the learning materials to include figurative language in the song’s part in the textbook.

Abstract

Fillers are utterances or phrases that are used in speaking to fill in the moment of silence to connect thoughts or ideas. This paper investigated the types and functions of fillers used by Emma Watson in her speeches. The researchers formulated two questions to be resolved. First, what are the types of fillers used in Emma Watson’s speeches? Second, what are the functions of filler words in the speeches? Data, consisting of 93 occurrences of fillers, were collected from Emma Watson’s speech scripts in three videos. To solve the research questions, the researchers used the descriptive qualitative approach and discourse analysis. Results showed that Watson used two types of fillers, namely unlexicalized filled pauses (71 occurrences) and lexical filled pauses (22 occurrences) and five functions of fillers, namely hesitating, empathizing, mitigating, editing term and time-creating devices.
