Abstract

Abstract. The main character, Yasmin, in the novel Maya was described as a strong and independent woman. Her relationship with other characters in the novel was the main focus of this research in terms of the power relation between Yasmin and other characters. This study aimed to find out Yasmin’s traits (in addition to the existing traits analyzed) through the analysis of politeness strategies used by Yasmin in her relationship with other characters. Qualitative method was used in which data analyzed were utterances. The utterances were analyzed based on the power relation between speaker and hearer as well as the politeness strategies used. The discussion showed that Yasmin used positive politeness more than other strategies and put herself in the position of holding the power in her relationship with other characters. Thus, Yasmin can be considered as a person who is confident as well as flexible. Keywords: Politeness Strategies, Character, Power Relation

Abstract

As one of the most complicated concepts to translate, a number of translators and researchers have presented various strategies to transfer the meaning of culture-specific items (CSIs) from one language to another. Through eight translation strategies used by professional translators based on Baker, this paper aimed to find the most applicable strategy to find a way around culture-specific items. In addition, this paper also attempted to categorize CSIs found in Tim OBriens The Things They Carried according to Newmarks five taxonomies of foreign cultural words. The comparative model in translation studies and comparative research were applied as methods to obtain and analyze data from both the source text and target text. The results showed that out of five taxonomies, social culture has the highest percentage overall with 45%. Furthermore, translation by paraphrase using unrelated words also has the highest percentage among the eight translation strategies with 31%. Therefore, it can be concluded that translation by paraphrase using unrelated words is the most applicable strategy to translate CSIs found in The Things They Carried.

Abstract

In learning English at school, students are also given lessons on writing skills. Writing skills require supportive media so that students are motivated to practice writing. Interesting activities need to be provided so that students can create good writing and get appreciation for their hard work. Facilitation in learning English, especially writing is carried out using language that is in accordance with the generation of high school students. Students are invited to write narrative texts according to their wishes. The text is collected and given constructive feedback and, in the end, it will be booked and published in the form of an anthology. The purpose of this program is to improve literacy for SMA Kristen Satya Wacana students, especially in narrative text writing. This service program used an exploratory method to find out the problems, and to develop appropriate materials to answer these problems. Material delivery was done face-to-face, while manuscript collection and feedback used online methods. This activity produced a collection of narrative texts and provided different activities to improve students' narrative text writing skills.

Abstract

Abstract

The engagement with poetry is a personalized journey that transcends standardized methodologies. Key to this process is complete immersion in the poetic experience, alongside evaluators’ openness to both human and machine-generated translations from Indonesian to English. The overarching goal is to enhance students’ discernment and appreciation of these translated works. The study’s specific objectives involved comparing poetic translation assessments by evaluators for both human translators and machine systems. It was to assess students’ appreciation of poetry through the lens of both translation methods across three different institutions. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative descriptive analyses, including descriptive statistics. The dataset comprised two Indonesian poems by Taufik Ismail, rated using a score as proposed by Nababan. Findings indicate that human translators outperformed machine systems in terms of accuracy, acceptance, and readability. While students from Institutions 1 and 2 preferred human-translated poetry, students from Institution 3 favoured machine-translated versions. This suggests that human translation quality remains superior.

Abstract

This era sees the diminishment of local culture and the likeliness of it being replaced by foreign cultures which can be a consequence of the younger generation’s interest in their own local culture. That said, SD Kristen Satya Wacana and the Faculty of Language and Arts of Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana organized a children's ketoprak performance which aimed at preserving the performance art of ketoprak while introducing multiculturalism through the use of international languages. This performance was also staged to cement the branding of UKSW as ‘Indonesia Mini’ where local cultures are preserved and appreciated. There were several stages to the performance: planning, script writing and rehearsal, and performance and evaluation. Taking the title of ‘Dewi Wulan’, the performance used four languages in its script: Javanese, Indonesian, English, and Mandarin. The performance led to a conclusion that the introduction of multiculturalism can happen simultaneously with the preservation of local culture, ketoprak in this case, presented through language learning.

Abstract

Conversation Analysis is a part of Discourse Analysis that is usually used to analyze conversations in human interaction. Since movies can be considered as a piece of literature made to resemble real life, this theory is adapted to discuss how characters in the movies interact to communicate. The different styles of communication between characters of different genders is a gripping subject to explore. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to analyze conversations between female-male, female-female, and male-male characters in the movie Barbie.   Since the data gathered were utterances in conversation, the adjacency pairs in the conversation were analyzed to see the pattern. The finding showed that there were differences in the types of adjacency pairs used between females and males in conversation. Female-Female conversations in Barbie tend to have more variety in types of adjacency pairs used if compared to Male-Male conversations. Meanwhile, the conversation between different genders, if initiated by a female (Female-Male conversations), was likely to have numerous types of adjacency pairs in contrast to if initiated by a male (Male-Female conversations). When the Indonesian subtitle was analyzed, there were no types of adjacency pairs modified through translation.   The findings also revealed that certain types of adjacency pairs were found only in specific gender conversations. Furthermore, the discussion revealed that gender plays a role in the choice of adjacency pairs employed.

Abstract

In the world of audiovisual translation, subtitles are often used to help audiences understand foreign language content, such as English films for Indonesian audiences. However, subtitle translation is not a simple job, especially when dealing with complex linguistic elements such as idioms. Thus, this research aims to analyze how idioms in the movie “Madagascar” were translated into subtitles. The qualitative descriptive method is used for this research. The analysis reveals that the movie contains 79 idioms. Most of the idioms were translated using Baker’s four idiom translation strategies. However, there are several cases where an idiom was not translated correctly. Thus, it resulted in semantic loss and led to a failure in the audience’s understanding. Through this research, it is evident that linguistic, contextual, and cultural precision are critical requirements for translators.

Abstract

Dialogue relates to the character’s feelings and attitude, so delivering them the same way as the SL is important and it can be crucial. In translating dialogues, a shift may occur from SL to TL. Shifts that occur may affect the quality of the dialogue translation. It can lead to a misrepresentation of the character’s feelings and attitudes. Therefore, this paper examines the shifts and the quality of translation. This research uses qualitative descriptive to categorize the shifts using Catford’s (1965) category shift and analyze its quality with Nababan’s (2021) accuracy assessment. There are  95 data found in total, where 87 data were considered accurate, 6 data were considered less accurate, and 2 data were considered inaccurate. The result shows a total range scale of 2,8 accurate points. It indicates when the shifts are applied correctly, they can deliver the feelings and attitudes of the characters naturally in the TL.
