Abstract

Local Food-Based Feeding Recommendations (LFFRs) were developed to fulfill the nutritional needs of stunted toddlers but remain underexplored in community settings. This study systematically examined child feeding practices based on LFFRs and investigated the contextual factors, challenges, and strategic efforts influencing their implementation by mothers of toddlers. A qualitative narrative design was used. Six mothers of toddlers were purposively selected and participated in in-depth interviews, each lasting 45–60 min. Data collection was conducted over two months. Thematic analysis was used to identify key patterns, and source triangulation was applied to enhance the credibility and trustworthiness of the findings. The analysis of the interview data revealed five main categories and 12 subthemes. These main categories were: (1) Overview of LFFRs implementation, (2) Factors influencing TIPs LFFRs, (3) Challenges in implementing TIPs LFFRs, and (4) Strategies to improve children's intake.  The findings revealed varied consumption patterns, with animal-based proteins (mainly eggs and chicken) dominating, limited intake of plant-based proteins (primarily tofu and tempeh), and fluctuating fruit, vegetable, and dairy consumption. Key barriers included children’s food preferences, time constraints, limited knowledge of local food preparation (e.g., wader fish and fresh milk), and perceived food-related risks. Adaptive strategies, such as diverse food processing and small frequent feedings, were employed by some mothers. These findings highlight the need for context-specific nutrition education and practical support for mothers, complemented by further research, evidence-based visual modules, practical caregiver training, and strengthened cross-sectoral collaboration to ensure the sustainable implementation of LFFRs and local food availability.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global food systems, including those in Indonesia. However, evidence at the provincial level remains limited, despite the importance of regional variation in shaping vulnerability and recovery capacity. Objectives: This study examined changes in the Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU), dietary quality assessed through Desirable Dietary Pattern (DDP) scores, energy and protein availability and consumption, and provincial recovery capacity using the Recovery Gap Index (RGI) before (2019) and during the pandemic (2020-2021). Methods: A quantitative study was conducted using secondary data from 34 provinces obtained from the National Food Agency for the period 2019-2021. Consumption variables were analyzed using RM-ANOVA, and PoU and availability indicators were tested using the Friedman test with Wilcoxon post-hoc comparisons. RGI was calculated as the difference between 2021 and 2019 values. Significance was set at p-value<0.05. Results: PoU increased significantly across years (p-value<0.001). DDP availability score differed between years (p-value=0.009), although the difference between 2020 and 2021 became non-significant after correction. DDP consumption score, availability of energy and protein, and protein intake remained stable (p-value>0.05). Energy consumption increased significantly from 2020 to 2021 (+29.7 kcal/capita/day; p-value=0.010). RGI showed that 32% to 74% of provinces experienced deterioration relative to pre-pandemic levels, especially for PoU. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic increased PoU indicators and reduced dietary quality. Although energy consumption improved, recovery was uneven across provinces. These findings indicate the need for policies to strengthen PoU and dietary quality tailored to provincial contexts to reduce interregional disparities.

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health problem in many developing countries, primarily due to inadequate nutrition. Nutrition education has been widely implemented; however, comparative evidence on the effectiveness of different communication pathways and educational media in promoting sustained maternal behavioral change remains limited. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of communication pathways and educational media in supporting behavior changes related to toddler nutrition. Studies were identified using the PICO framework through searches in PubMed and Scopus, following PRISMA guidelines.  The inclusion criteria were open-access articles published between 2020 and 2025 that assessed behavioral outcomes and evaluated communication pathways or educational media. The methodological quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools. Of the 2,500 articles identified, 14 studies met the inclusion criteria. The results indicate that interpersonal communication provides the most consistent evidence to support sustained nutrition-related behavioral change through personalized two-way interactions. Community and mass communication pathways mainly improve awareness and attitudes, with less consistent effects on long-term behavior. Educational media, particularly video-based media, enhance engagement and comprehension but are most effective when integrated into interactive communication pathways. Combining communication pathways with educational media appears to be the most effective approach for improving maternal feeding practices.

Abstract

Suboptimal infant and young child feeding practices remain a major contributor to child malnutrition, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Maternal nutritional literacy plays a key role in shaping appropriate feeding behaviors. Digital platforms, such as WhatsApp and mobile health (mHealth) applications, have emerged as potential tools for delivering nutrition education. This systematic review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched for studies published between 2020 and 2025. Eligible studies included digital nutrition education interventions targeting mothers of infants and young children and reported outcomes related to maternal nutrition literacy and/or child feeding practices. Due to the heterogeneity of the study designs and outcome measures, the findings were synthesized narratively. Fourteen studies were included in the review. Most were conducted in LMIC settings and involved WhatsApp-based or mobile health interventions. Digital education is generally associated with improved maternal nutrition literacy, dietary diversity, timely initiation of complementary feeding, and feeding frequency. Theory-based and interactive interventions have demonstrated stronger engagement than passive approaches. Digital nutrition education via WhatsApp and mHealth shows promising evidence for supporting maternal nutrition literacy and child feeding practices, although methodological variability warrants cautious interpretation.
