The object of this study is the State Islamic University (UIN) Kiai Haji Achmad Siddiq Jember and Islamic Religious Instructors in the Jember regency. This study concludes that the partnership between two institutions supports the mainstreaming of religious moderation values in several forms, including early mapping of religious conflicts, formulating strategies for resolving religious phenomena, and using digital media. These two institutions agreed on several points outlined in their “declaration.” The functions of religious instructors include educative, consultative, informative, and motivational, and Islamic higher education's role is to become a bridge to assist and provide religious education to the community based on religious moderation values, such as tolerance, fairness, and egalitarianism.

Abstract

This article discusses the politics of local Sufi group (tarekat) in Indonesia, the Shiddiqiyyah. It addresses the locality of Shiddiqiyah tarekat and its politics during New Order Indonesia and following the fall of the regime. It is argued that the Shiddiqiyah, a local tarekat with its roots in East Java and later successfully welcomes national reputation, is an example of a tarekat that utilizes nationalistic slogan to expand its influence as well as to protect the tarekat from heretic accusation. Through a series of intensive fieldwork, the article argues that the Shiddiqiyyah has successfully maintained ideological patronage to the New Order Indonesia through nationalistic slogan which has been a core value of the group. The doctrine of nationalism has been translated in Sufi and Javanese idioms and become fundamental doctrine of the Shiddiqiyyah.

Abstract

This paper was written to become a preliminary record of the hadith debate as one of the sacred texts of Islam in the disruption era. An era marked by the rise of new media, namely alternative media, which in its development has become a new field of religious discourse debate. The debate about Hadith also found its momentum increasingly dynamic. For instance, Muslims in Indonesia use new media to access and make hadith as a lifestyle reference. The emerging of terms such as halal food, syar'i heads carves, halal tourism, ojek syar'i, prophet-style healing, and so on are some examples of them. Unfortunately the existence of this new media indirectly shifts the authority of the Ulama as a reference in understanding the sacred texts, including hadith. This shift emerges to fabrication and distortion of understanding. The contestation of the Hadits authority still revolves around the two main camps: textualism-fundamentalism on the one hand and moderate contextualist- on the other hand. Outside of the two mainstream, the Inkar Sunah group also colored the contestation of hadith authority in new media by middle-class Muslims. Although its voice was not as massive as the two previous groups.

Abstract

This article aims to examine Mohammad Hashim Kamali’s thoughts on the paradigm of moderate Islamic law (wasatiyyah), which emphasizes harmonious values and a humanistic approach as an integral part of maqasid al-shariah. The focus is on how Kamali’s moderate fiqh can address contemporary issues and offer an alternative to rigid, literal interpretations of Islamic law. This research employs a library research method, analyzing Kamali’s works and relevant literature to explore the foundations of his thought. A philosophical-normative analysis is used to discuss how Kamali’s ideas on moderate fiqh are rooted in the objectives of Islamic law (maqasid al-shariah) and how they align with contemporary needs for flexibility and human-centered legal reasoning. The study finds that Kamali proposes a reformation of Islamic law in response to the violence and rigidity fostered by formalistic legal understandings. His moderate fiqh, based on the principles of wasatiyyah, advocates for a balanced, context-sensitive approach to Islamic law that aligns with humanist values and social justice, all while upholding the core objectives of maqasid al-shariah. Kamali’s thought offers a significant contribution to the development of Islamic jurisprudence, proposing a moderate and adaptive legal framework that remains faithful to Islamic principles while responding to the complexities of the modern world. His approach can help reconcile traditional Islamic law with contemporary humanistic values, promoting peace, justice, and tolerance.

Abstract

The Indonesian Muslim diaspora maintains both social and Islamic identities in their host countries. In this context, numerous studies indicate that the quest for identity generates divisions among Muslims and might, to some degree, incite disputes and rivalries. This article contradicts that assertion. We collected data during a participatory experience in community service activities grounded in Assets-Based Community Development (ABCD) at two Indonesian Muslim organizations in Australia, specifically AIMF-ACT and IMCV. This article, utilizing the qualitative case study technique, reveals that members of both organizations possess a dynamic sense of community. Amidst the diversity of identities present in each individual, a sense of unity emerges. The sense of community derives from geographical linkages and a collective commitment to the significance of practicing Islam within a diverse context. Although not all members realize it, awareness of the variety of Islamic expressions is rising, which gives rise to a new optimism that variations in how Muslims practice Islam can increase social cohesiveness rather than inevitably cause conflict and hostility. This article categorizes prior theories regarding the sense of community, including the perspectives of David W. McMillan and David M. Chavis.

Abstract

For some reason, the religious needs’ fulfillment of the diffable communities was not in line with the supply from both government and non-government institutions. This is inseparable from the impartiality of policies and low awareness, as well as a lack of public awareness of the rights of disabled communities. As a result, the negative stigma of being a non-productive community as well as ghair mukallaf (free of religious burdens) is still attached to them. The Taman Pendidikan al-Qur’an Spirit Da'wah Indonesia Foundation (TPQLB SPIDI) Tulungagung, which is the focus of this study, is one of the institutions that believe that their involvement is the answer to these needs, inequality, and slanted views. This institution survives and even continues to grow and steal the public's attention. This article is a record of community empowerment based on the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) method with an emphasis on the analysis of organizational resilience in a sociological perspective. As a non-profit and non-governmental organization, TPQLB SPIDI can be resilient to several factors, such as mindful action, performance optimization, adaptive innovation, and paradoxical thinking. In addition, it is also supported by adequate social capital.

Abstract

Originally, mbrakah was a practice of food combining or food custom for spiritual purposes. The mbrakah tradition also can be categorized as 'food fashion.' In the global academic discourse, food culture and spirituality are important issues with strong traditional roots in Sufism and prophetic traditions, especially in Sufism. Particularly, mbrakah is even more unique because it is rooted in Sufism traditions and early Islamic norms and has been in dialogue with local wisdom, namely Indonesian Culture and, more specifically, Pesantren culture. One of the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. In this article, We conceptualize that the mbrakah tradition does not merely stop as a food-combining tradition only carried out for personal interests. Based on the literature review, we argue that mbrakah can be transformed from theology to food ideology. Although the ideology referred to in the article is not an ideology in a complex sense, it can be a way of thinking and manifested into a movement and shared awareness about the importance of successful food diversification for food security during food problems in Indonesia. Mbrakah is a local culture and holds a religious dimension that many researchers consider, and it has the potential to be highly effective as a transformative movement.

Abstract

Abstract: The sema’an tradition and learning the Qur’an in the disability community are less popular. Disability communities, in many phenomena, receive less attention, either by policymakers, religious leaders, or society, even though religious and legal norms and state regulations accommodate their right to learn, including religious learning. However, with various limitations and social problems admitted, the tradition of learning the Qur’an by the disability community at the Taman Pendidikan al-Qur’an Spirit Dakwah Indonesia Foundation (TPQLB SPIDI) Tulungagung exists. This paper aims to examine how the practice of sema’an and learning the Qur’an in the disability community by expanding the social practice perspective of Pierre Bourdieu and through ethnographic methods. This article uncovers that sema’an tradition at TPQLB SPIDI is not only motivated to preserve tradition but also to revive the Qur’an (living the Qur’an) and to create a supportive learning atmosphere. The habit of reading the Qur’an ‘as they can do’ becomes a habituation of the students in developing discipline, willingness, kinship, perseverance, and sincerity. This habituation is also related to the fields which is in dialectic with the socio-capital created in the community.
