Abstract

This paper discusses the character education in Kitab Adab al-‘Alimwa al-Muta’allim, written by one of the founders of largest Muslim organization in Indonesia, Nahdlatul Ulama (1926), Kyai Hasyim Asy’ari as a form of social piety. This book has provided a comprehensive and constructive way of character education which integrates Islamic values with various religious texts. Character education which includes and complements a broad range of educational approaches such as social-emotional learning and civic education shares a commitment to help people become responsible and contributive citizens. Meanwhile, pesantren have taught and built strong characters of the santri in the forms of rabbaniyah (godness), insaniyah (humanity), wasathiyyah (moderateness) and waqi’iyyah (reality) characters. Therefore, pesantren-based character education the book described is a key element to nurture Muslims’ good habits. This paper shows that the book can be an answer for Indonesia’s contemporary multi-dimensional crises, such as radicalism and terrorism.

Abstract

Sufism and tarekat (Sufi order) play a significant role in building and enhancing mutual-peaceful dialogue between Islam and other religions and cultures. The Sufis establish cooperation with followers of other religions. This is because Sufism holds moderate view and understanding of Islamic doctrines. Sufism is, therefore, not limited only on spirituality and mystical realm, but it is also able to create a harmonious relationship among humans and between humans and nature. This article seeks to present a related study on the doctrine of religious tolerance within Sufism promulgated by KH. Sholeh Bahruddin, the headmaster of Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) Ngalah Pasuruan East Java. Kiai Sholeh sees Sufism as the main foundation of religious tolerance. As the murshid of the Tarekat Q?dir?yah wa Naqsaband?yah Mujaddad?yah Kh?lid?yah Kiai Sholeh has intensively cultivated Islam ra?mah li al-??lam?n in the pesantren he leads. This doctrine emphasizes that Islam ra?mah li al-??lam?n perceives all human beings as kabeh dulur (all are brothers) regardless of their religious and social background, and political preference. Through the concept of kabeh dulur, Kiai Sholeh builds human relationships with anyone, including people of different faiths and beliefs.

Abstract

The educational curriculum in Indonesia is very dynamic. Curriculum changes occur because it adapts to the times and society. This flexibility follows a growing era and increasingly sophisticated technology or is related to problems in a country. This paper examines the influence of the Covid-19 Pandemic which has spread to Indonesia, causing the government to create an emergency curriculum for the smooth running of the learning system. Learning is usually done face-to-face in a place, but now takes place face-to-face with a distance and relies on the existence of communication technology. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive-analytical approach with data sources from various educational institutions both based on Islam and the general public. Data obtained from educators by in-depth interviews. The results of the study explain that the impact of this learning system change on the learning process, understanding of a lesson, and the character of students. Changes in the curriculum during the pandemic were not completely, but rather in the design of learning by educators that included methods, media, to evaluation and the time used. Synergy and good communication are needed between the institution, educators, students and parents so that there are no problems that hinder learning.

Abstract

The Murabitun World Movement promotes the gold dinar and silver dirham as authentic Islamic currency tools. However, their vision of establishing an independent Islamic currency is rejected by the socio-political dynamics of the communities’ home countries. Using Talal Asad’s theory of Islam as a discursive tradition, the study investigates the local practices of the Murabitun among Indonesian Muslims, with particular attention to their cultural identity. This study relies much on online data and cyber resources. The Indonesian Murabitun actively promoted the circulation of the gold dinar and silver dirham as an Islamic currency at the Pasar Muamala (exchange market) in Madiun and Yogyakarta. The Indonesian Murabitun movement was initially established in Depok, West Java by Zaim Saidi with his creation of the Pasar Muamala. After Zaim Saidi was formally charged with violating the currency law, his movement lose much its influence. However, utilizing the dynamics of the socio-political landscape this movement has continued to be actively involved in promoting the gold dinar and silver dirham currency—as an alternative transaction tool alongside the regular currency—on digital media platforms.
