Abstract

This paper attempted to examine the efficacy of the Probing-Prompting Technique in teaching speaking skills to young beginner English learners. This study employed the experimental method with a pre-experimental design. The subjects of this study were English learners age 16 to 19 in Palopo City who were chosen using a purposive sampling technique to select the active learners. Using the oral presentation task, the writers compiled three aspects of the learner's score, i.e. accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility. The experimental teaching was conducted in six meetings, preceded by a pre-test and ended by a post-test. The pre-test found that the learners’ speaking skill ability is low (mean score: 25.75). In post-test, the authors found that the learners’ language ability substantially improved. Some learners get significant improvement in every aspect of speaking skills, i.e. fluency, accuracy, and comprehensibility. The strategy also contributed to the increase in the mean score (51.50). As a result, the writers concluded that Probing-Prompting Strategy successfully improves the learners’ speaking skills. It is proven by the result of the paired-sample test which showed that t-count (7,584) is higher than t-table (2,365).

Abstract

Research studies on students' writing anxiety have been done in many EFL teaching contexts. However, there are still very limited scientific articles published about university students' foreign language writing anxiety and the causes in the Indonesian university context. Therefore, this study's main purpose was to analyze students' anxiety in EFL writing and its causes. This study employed a descriptive quantitative method. The study subjects were chosen from the first-year students of the Accounting Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Palopo academic year 2021-2022, which consists of three classes. Two types of questionnaires were used for collecting the data. The first questionnaire was based on Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) developed by Cheng (2014). The questionnaire consisted of 21 items designed to assess students' English writing anxiety. The second questionnaire, the Second Language Writing Fear Inventory (CSLWFI), derived from Rezaei and Jafari's (2014), which was adopted to find out the causes of a feeling of anxiety in writing, consisted of ten questions. SPSS ver. 20 was used to analyze the gathered data. The findings revealed that the student's English writing anxiety was significant, and the key causes were poor understanding of writing concepts, linguistic obstacles, insufficient writing skill practice, and time restrictions.

Abstract

This Article aims to describe whether there is the interplay of self confidance and communicative competence of junior high school where the students of SMP 9 Pinrang is as place to apply research. This research uses cluster sumpling method and oral test. The population in this research is the students of class VII SMPN 9 Pinrang. The total population is 104 students. The sample used is class VIIL.1 amounted to 28 students. The method used in the assessment of speech is an oral test. Result of research by using Pearson Product Moment obtained r value count 0,700 and with value of product r product moment product with N = 28 found 0,478 at significant level 1% and found 0,374 at level signifikan5%. And to know the level of product moment correlation then coefficient 0.61-0.80 = substantial. Thus it can be interpreted to the rxy that between variable X and variable Y. It can be seen on the analysis result that is: 0,700> 0,478 (5%) and 0,700 0,374 (1%) with d.b:28. This means Ho is rejected and Ha accepted. The conclusion in this study is there is a significant relationship between student self-confidence and speaking ability of eight-year students SMPN 9 Pinrang.

Abstract

Abstract

Salting is one of the most widely used traditional preservation methods for producing salted fish, including lemuru (Sardinella lemuru). However, scientific information regarding the effect of different salting techniques on the water content and sensory characteristics of salted lemuru remains limited. This study aims to compare the water content and sensory quality of salted lemuru processed using wet salting (50% and 100%) and dry salting (5% and 10%) with different drying durations (5, 7, and 9 hours). The production process followed the Indonesian National Standard SNI 8273:2023, while moisture analysis referred to SNI 2354.2:2015. Sensory evaluation was conducted by 30 untrained panelists assessing appearance, odor, and texture. Results showed that dry salting produced lower moisture content (7.22-8.27%) compared to wet salting (9.52-11.41%). In contrast, the highest appearance and texture sensory scores were obtained from wet salting, particularly treatment B100-9 (score 8.60), whereas dry salting with high salt concentration and prolonged drying (K10-9) resulted in decreased texture and odor quality due to excessive dehydration. Overall, the findings confirm that salting method significantly affects the final quality of salted lemuru, and wet salting with an optimal salt concentration provides the best balance between moisture reduction and desirable sensory characteristics.

Abstract

The growing attention paid to learner autonomy in higher education has led to interest in alternative pedagogical frameworks like heutagogy, which advocates for self-determined learning and the development of reflective capability. Nonetheless, actual studies investigating the implementation of heutagogy in academic writing training are limited, especially within the Islamic higher education context. This study examines the comprehension and application of heutagogical principles in academic writing training at a state Islamic higher education institution in eastern Indonesia. A qualitative case study design was utilized, with data gathered through semi-structured interviews with four lecturers and twenty-four undergraduate students, classroom observations, and document analysis over six months. Thematic analysis identified five interrelated themes: diverse interpretations of heutagogy, conflicts between institutional traditions and pedagogical innovation, inconsistent student readiness for self-determined learning, the impact of instructor agency and professional experience, and the contribution of digital technologies to facilitating autonomous writing practices. The findings indicate that although a heutagogical approach promotes reflective learning and learner autonomy, its application is influenced by institutional norms, students’ previous educational experiences, and lecturers’ pedagogical beliefs. The research illustrates the impact of culturally rooted principles and institutional customs on the implementation of learner-centered pedagogies in Islamic higher education, emphasizing the necessity for pedagogical scaffolding and professional development to foster learner autonomy in academic writing instruction. Keywords: Academic Writing, Heutagogy, Learner Autonomy, Islamic Higher Education, Self-Determined Learning
