Abstract

This community service program aimed to improve the dental and oral hygiene of school-age children at SDN 12 Puhun Pintu Kabun, Mandiangin Koto Selayan District, Bukittinggi City, through education using poster media. The implementation method consisted of three main stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The implementation stage included oral health education, demonstrations of proper tooth brushing techniques using the “4 Right 5 Perfect” principle, and hands-on practice with a disclosing solution made from red dragon fruit extract to identify uncleaned tooth areas. Evaluation was carried out through pre-test and post-test assessments to measure knowledge improvement and Hygiene Index (HI) examinations before and after the activity. The results showed a significant increase in students’ oral hygiene, with good dental cleanliness rising from 58% to 94%, and good knowledge increasing from 51% to 96%. The program also successfully established new habits of brushing teeth twice daily using the correct technique. In conclusion, this community service program effectively improved children’s oral health knowledge and behavior through interactive education and hands-on learning using poster-based media.

Abstract

Background: One of the causes of dental caries is Streptococcus mutant bacteria which has the ability to change the sugar content of food waste into lactic acid as the initial process of caries. One of the efforts to overcome dental caries is to use natural ingredients such as nutmeg. Every part of nutmeg has active substances that are efficacious as antimicrobial, antibacterial, antioxidant, antifungal and anti-inflammatory. Pulpam, seeds and fuli of nutmeg showed as potential extracts in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans. Objective: This study aimed to analyze methanol extracts from pericarpium, pulpam, fuli and nutmeg seeds against the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria that causes dental plaque. Methods: The research was conducted by diffusion method using BHI agar media and incubated anaerobically at 37°C for 24 hours. Results: The results of the calculation of the average diameter of the inhibition zones from the extract of fuli, seeds, pulpam and pericarpium of the nutmeg plant were 19.00 mm, 25.33 mm, 15.66 mm, 22.66 mm, and 21.83 mm, respectively. Data analysis using ANOVA (one way) showed that there were significant differences in all groups at p<0.05. The results of the LSD test showed that there were significant differences in all treatment groups. Conclusion: Methanol extract from fruit and fruit parts of nutmeg showed the ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause dental plaque.

Abstract

Abstract

Tooth brushing is the primary method for controlling dental plaque. The horizontal–vertical combination technique and the fone’s-vertical technique are simple methods commonly used by children in daily life. This study aimed to analyze the differences in dental and oral hygiene status among 12-year-old children using these techniques at SDN 16 Kampeh and SDN 15 Simarasok, Agam Regency. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest approach. A total of 48 respondents were selected using a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected through the Hygiene Index examination. Data analysis included univariate and bivariate analyses using the independent t-test. The results showed that the improvement in dental and oral hygiene was 22.58% for the horizontal–vertical combination technique and 34.62% for the fone’s-vertical technique, with a p-value of 0.000 (p ≤ 0.05). In conclusion, the fone’s-vertical technique is more effective in improving dental and oral hygiene compared to the horizontal–vertical combination technique.
