Abstract

Abstract

Background: Chitosan synthesized from Penaeus monodon shells was developed into a chitosan-gelatin suspension as an injectable bone substitute for socket preservation. Purpose: To investigate the characteristics of chitosan from P. monodon shells and their influence on the viscosity of a chitosan-gelatin suspension. Methods: P. monodon shells from Tarakan Waters were prepared using three methods: Group 1) deproteinization-depigmentation-deacetylation, Group 2) demineralization-depigmentation-deacetylation, and Group 3) deproteinization-demineralization-depigmentation-deacetylation. The chitosan was characterized by morphology, moisture and ash content, molecular weight (MW), deacetylation degree (DD), and viscosity. This chitosan was made into a chitosan-gelatin suspension with a ratio of 45:55 (w/w%) (95 ml:110 ml). The differences in viscosity of the chitosan-gelatin suspension were determined using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests. The effects of the chitosan’s MW and DD on the viscosity of the chitosan-gelatin suspension were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation. Results: Group 2 had the highest moisture content (10.63%), MW (159.68 kDa), viscosity of the chitosan powder (5.53 dPa.s), and viscosity of the chitosan-gelatin suspension (40.20 cps). Group 1 had the highest ash content (27.83%) and DD (93.72%). Group 3 showed the lowest ash content (1.06%), MW (37.12 kDa), and DD (86.22%), but it had good viscosity of the chitosan-gelatin suspension (37.25 cps). A significant difference in viscosity was found between the chitosan-gelatin suspension groups. Spearman’s correlation coefficients between the viscosity of the chitosan-gelatin suspension and MW and between the viscosity of the chitosan-gelatin suspension and DD were 0.389 and −0.195, respectively. Conclusion: The viscosity of a chitosan-gelatin suspension is influenced by the MW and DD of the chitosan powder. Chitosan from P. monodon can potentially be an injectable bone substitute in socket preservation.

Abstract

Background: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is widely recognized as the prevailing direct esthetic restorative material. In order for a restoration material to be considered effective, possess favorable physical and mechanical properties. Incorporating with hydroxyapatite (HA) can provide these properties. This research is to investigate the impact of integrating HA into GIC on the flexural strength and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the fractured surfaces. Methods: The study consisted of 28 samples of GIC, which are fabricated in the shape of rectangular prisms (25x2x2mm). The samples were divided into four groups n=7. Group 1 is a control group (GIC), Group 2 GIC+2%HA, group 3 GIC+2%HA, and GIC+4%HA. The flexural strength of the sample was evaluated by a Universal testing machine, followed by an examination of the fracture surface using SEM. Result: The Brown-Forsythe was used as data analysis to examine the flexural strength values across all groups, resulting in a statistically significant p-value of less than 0.05. The addition of HA does not result in a significant increase in the flexural strength value of the glass ionomer cement (GIC). The integration of microstructure based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures demonstrates improved visual quality following the incorporation of HA. Conclusion: The addition of HA to GIC did not result in a significant change in flexural strength compared to the control group. However, GIC group with 2% HA exhibited the highest average flexural strength value among all the groups

Abstract

Dental and oral health in Indonesia is still a health problem that requires attention. To address dental and oral health problems in Indonesia, particularly in school-age and adult groups, it is necessary to carry out promotive-preventive activities by inviting local universities and business entities that focus on dental and oral health. The most common dental and oral diseases are caries and periodontal disease. One of the strategies of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia in reducing the number of dental caries sufferers is by declaring the "Carry Free Indonesia 2030" program. The lack of knowledge and awareness of the Indonesian population regarding dental hygiene and the difficulty of reaching information due to the geographical conditions in several regions in Indonesia which make it impossible to hamper the distribution of education. The Training of Trainer Program targets teachers and parents for 21 days of morning and evening toothbrushes, teaching children and adults about the benefits of good oral hygiene and showing them how to brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. This program aims to provide comprehensive, applicable and sustainable education and knowledge about dental and oral health to school-age children in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) learning model in improving students' reading skills on academic ability test questions, as well as identifying the obstacles faced by teachers in its implementation. The subjects of the study were teachers at Sukoharjo State Islamic Senior High School and Sukoharjo State Islamic Junior High School 3. The informants of this study were teachers. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the implementation of the CIRC model was carried out through four steps of activities, namely preparation and understanding of the topic (pre-reading), reading activities (reading), writing activities (writing), and post-reading activities (post-reading). These four steps were able to encourage active student involvement, improve text comprehension, and train students' analytical skills in answering academic ability test questions. However, in its implementation, teachers still face several obstacles, namely limited time to implement all stages of CIRC, differences in student ability levels, difficulties in managing group discussions, and limited resources and relevant teaching materials. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the CIRC model has the potential to improve students' reading skills on academic ability test questions, but it requires careful planning, effective classroom management, and adequate learning resource support so that its implementation can run optimally.
