Abstract

Sempu Island is a nature reserve that has fringing reef with percentage of living coral cover almost constant 37% from 2009 to 2016. Coral massive Porites lutea in this area has a growth rate about 1.09 cm/yr. in average and almost similar with others. Coral massive growth rate can be monitor through their skeletal annual banding. They have two type annual banding, low density for slow growth coral skeletal and high density for fast growth rate of coral skeletal. In this banding coral can record any environmental condition such as sea water temperature, tides and heavy metal. The aim of this research was to know the concentration of copper in Sempu Island Nature Reserve in the past used ICP-OES. The result showed that the Cu concentration in P. lutea skeletal band from 2009-2016 were: 5.213; 6.403; 5.825; 6.511; 6.132; 6.403; 6.467; 6.22 mg/kg. The coral skeletal can absorb the pollutant for hundred years, and it will give important information for palaeo environment that can used for climate modelling in the future.

Abstract

Abstract

Coral reef is a massive natural building block that mainly composed of hard coral. In ecological view coral reef is the center of biological activity for shelter, foraging and feeding place. Porites lutea is a common coral in reef flat area such as in Pantai Kondang Merak. This coral can form a massive with hillocky colony surface and has a slow linear extension rate, that made this coral has long longevity. The annual growth band of coral skeleton provide information of pollutants in the coastal extending back over several years ago due to ability of coral aragonite traped trace metal from environment. The aim of this research was to determine the concentration of trace metals of Cd, Cu and As along with the coral annual banding. The heavy metals detection was performed using ICP-OES (iCAP 7400 Series). The concentration of Cd, Cu and As in sample 1 (KM1) were 2.236 mg/kg, 9.726 mg/kg, and 2.474 mg/kg, while sample 2 (KM2) were 1.989 mg/kg, 19.157 mg/kg, and 2,064 mg/kg respectively. Two ways mechanism of trace metals to be trapped in the coral skeleton are by direct mechanism when trace metals in a form dissolved ion that were uptaken by coral then stored into coral skeleton and by indirect mechanism when particulate metals ingested by plankton then eaten by coral through coral tissue. The tracing of heavy metal in coral is provided important information of environment condition of the sea from 2009 - 2015 that may be used for authority decision regarding pollutant ambient in the sea environment.

Abstract

Coral disease now became main factor of coral degradation in the world. There is still a few report about coral disease in Kepulauan Seribu Marine National Park (TNKPS) include of white syndrome (WS) in Montipora sp. WS was characterized by white area on coral surface at several stages. WS had caused coral tissue loss and leaved bare CaCO3 skeleton that was caused by pathogenic Vibrio coralliitycus associated with other microorganisms. In this study the progress of WS calculated by measurement of the distances of WS that moved from diseased to healty coral surface. All calculations was performed used ImageJ Software. Our result showed that WS progression rate in first week was 9.06 cm2 and the second week was 2.37 cm2. Total coral tissue mortality was 12.03% for 2 weeks.

Abstract

Reef Check is an activity to find out the condition of coral reefs and its surrounding ecosystems be then described and categorized its healthiness. The island of Java is one of the Islands in Indonesia that has lots of beaches, especially for East Java, here they have several areas that has become our research site in Sempu Strait, Sendang Biru, South Malang they are called Teluk Semut, Watu Meja, and Waru-waru. Underwater Visual Census (UVC) was used as a method for this research to identify reef fish in a transect of 100 x 5 x 5m scale in (Length, Width, and Height). Results shows several fishes was used to identify yet the family of Chaetodontidae with mean abundance 8 in Teluk Semut 1 station, 2.25 in Teluk Semut 2 station, 12.5 in Rumah Ikan station, & 13.5 in Watu Meja station. Watu Meja and Fish Apartment station shows higher mean abundance than other station, this indicates coral reefs ecosystem in this station have a better health & condition compare to the other stations. Results for family family Haemulidae, Snapper and Grouper shows low mean abundance, that indicates overfishing on Sempu Strait, South Malang. In other cases, the purposes of Reef Check is to determine the extents of human activities and its impact against the distribution and the healthiness of coral reefs in the area. For further extent, there has been still indications toward its management system yet fisheries potential in certain areas for this research.

Abstract

The aim this study was to determine the condition of bottom substrate base of Sempu Island Nature Reserve of Malang that was very important to know the coral reef composition to support living creatures in this area. The research was conducted on December 8-9, 2017, the substrates data was taken by using Point Intercept Transect (PIT) for 100 m along of coast of Sempu Island (Reef Check Indonesia), the transect was divided into four parts 20 meters each segment and 5 m blank between segments. The data was taken into three stations, they were Teluk Semut 1 , Teluk Semut 2, and Watu Meja. The results of this study indicate that the basic substrate of waters at Sempu Island Nature Reserve is divided into two: living (HC = Hard Coral, SC = Soft Coral, NIA = Nutrien Indicator Algae, SP = Sponge and OT = Other) and non-living (RKC = Ricently Killed Coral, RC = Rock, RB = Rubble, SD = Sand and SI = Silt). Teluk Semut Station 1 was dominated by the rubble (39%), Teluk Semut 2 station and Watu Meja were dominated by hard coral (53%). In conclusion, from three monitored stations showed that the life coral percentage in Sempu Island water was significane changed during last one year where in Teluk Semut 1 the coral coverage decreased to 21.75%, while in Teluk Semut 2 and Watu Meja was increased up to 42.38% and 25.5% respectively. The natural and non-natural factors may have influenced the changed of substrate cover in Sempu Island water during this last year.
