Abstract

Inventory issues are often a major concern as they significantly impact operating costs. Lot sizing is one of the key decisions in managing inventory. However, in a real context, the demand for each item is often uncertain. It is supplied from the same supplier, requiring product orders to be placed in the same period. In addition, limited vehicle capacity and transportation costs are important factors to consider in making multi-item lot sizing decisions. The purpose of this study is to propose a new inventory model multi-item lot sizing model involving transportation cost and capacity constraints under stochastic demand. The decision variables involved in the model are each item's ordering cycle and safety factor with the objective function of minimizing the total inventory cost. To optimize the inventory model, this study also offers the advanced procedure of the Aquila Algorithm. This study also presents sensitivity analysis to the appropriate policy for optimizing the multi-item lot-sizing inventory problem involving transportation cost and capacity constraint under stochastic demand.

Abstract

This research applies the concept of sustainable layout in the manufacturing industry by incorporating social, environmental, and economic aspects in the production process. The main objective of this research is to design a sustainable layout for the plastic packaging manufacturing industry. The approach utilizes the TOPSIS method to select an Activity Relation Chart (ARC) integrated with a systematic Layout Planning procedure. A case study is presented on an industry that produces plastic packaging in Indonesia. The results show that the proposed sustainable layout design significantly reduces the material handling distance compared to the initial layout. These results confirm that the Systematic Layout Planning approach and TOPSIS method have great potential in designing layouts that integrate sustainable principles effectively in manufacturing environments.

Abstract

The scarcity and possible depletion of energy sources in the future is due to the high energy consumption in the manufacturing industry. One of the efforts to deal with this problem is scheduling. This article investigates the Hybrid Flow Shop Scheduling Problem (HFSSP) to minimize energy consumption. A metaheuristic algorithm procedure is proposed, inspired by the Salp swarm in the ocean, the Salp Swarm Algorithm. The SSA algorithm is proposed to determine the optimal sequencing considering minimal energy consumption. An interesting finding of this study is that the higher the population and iterations, the lower the energy consumption. In addition, the optimization results show that the total energy consumption is due to variations in setup and removal energy consumption and idle machine energy consumption. From the numerical results, the SSA algorithm can produce scheduling with minimal energy consumption compared to the heuristic procedure.

Abstract

Increasing energy consumption has faced challenges and pressures for modern manufacturing operations. The production sector accounts for half of the world's total energy consumption. Reducing idle machine time by employing No-Idle Permutation Flow Shop Scheduling (NIPFSP) is one of the best decisions for reducing energy consumption. This article modifies one of the energy consumption-solving algorithms, the Aquila Optimizer (AO) algorithm. This research contributes by 1) proposing novel AO procedures for solving energy consumption problems with NIPFSP and 2) expanding the literature on metaheuristic algorithms that can solve energy consumption problems with NIPFSP. To analyze whether the AO algorithm is optimal, we compared by using the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) algorithm. It compares these two algorithms to tackle the problem of energy consumption by testing four distinct problems. Comparison of the AO and GWO algorithm is thirty times for each case for each population and iteration. The outcome of comparing the two algorithms is using a t-test on independent samples and ECR. In all case studies, the results demonstrate that the AO algorithm has a lower energy consumption value than GWO. The AO algorithm is therefore recommended for minimizing energy consumption because it can produce more optimal results than the comparison algorithm.

Abstract

Global energy consumption is a pressing issue and is predicted to continue increasing between 2010 and 2040. Among the various sectors, the industrial sector, particularly manufacturing, is the main driver of this increase. To effectively address this growing problem and support energy conservation efforts, reducing idle time on production-related machines is critical. The No-Idle Permutation Flow Shop Problem (NIPFSP) and, indirectly, the need to reduce energy consumption in manufacturing processes are the driving forces behind this study. The African Vultures Optimization Algorithm (AVOA) and the Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO) are two novel meta-heuristic algorithms designed to achieve this goal. The effectiveness of both AVOA and ALO was rigorously evaluated across three distinct scenarios: small, medium, and large. Statistical analysis, in the form of independent sample t-tests, was employed to compare the performance of these algorithms. We found that, while both algorithms yielded similar results in the small case, AVOA demonstrated a superior capability in optimizing the NIPFSP in the medium and large cases and, consequently, in curbing energy consumption. This implies that AVOA offers a more promising approach to addressing energy consumption concerns in the manufacturing sector, particularly in scenarios involving medium- to large-scale production processes. The implementation of such innovative meta-heuristic algorithms holds the potential to significantly contribute to global energy conservation efforts while enhancing the efficiency of industrial operations.

Abstract

Energy-efficient scheduling is an important problem in the industrial world because improper scheduling can increase energy consumption. One of the production scheduling problems is the Permutation Flow Shop Scheduling Problem (PFSP). This article tries to review research on energy-efficient PFSP to provide a comprehensive review of trends and research gaps in energy-efficient PFSP. A systematic literature review (SLR) was used to conduct this research survey, and 123 articles were collected from 2011-2023. This SLR classifies articles based on publication year, type, objective function, and optimization method used. The results of the literature review analysis show a significant increase every year for energy-efficient PFSP, and multi-objective problems are the dominant problems studied. Based on the analysis of solutions to solve energy efficient PFSP, metaheuristic procedures are the procedures that contribute the largest to solving energy efficient PFSP, and the objective function that is popularly used is to minimize total energy consumption. In addition to this, this study presents a gap research analysis and future research directions for energy-efficient PFSP.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to develop a new model for a comprehensive Economic Production Quantity (EPQ) by considering repair processes, waste disposal, electricity tariffs, and emission taxes to optimize inventory management decisions in two shops. The first shop is responsible for providing new manufacturing and remanufacturing products required by the second shop, which focuses on inventorying finished products to meet demand. The main objective of the proposed Model is to minimize total cost. The Model is formulated as Integer Non-Linear Programming (INLP) to represent the complexity of production and inventory decisions. This study applies a Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach run using Microsoft Excel software with the Solver feature To optimize the solution of the proposed Model. Sensitivity analysis shows that while increases in electricity tariffs and emissions taxes significantly increase the total costs incurred by firms, these factors do not directly reduce total energy consumption or carbon emissions. Instead, increased costs generally result in smaller optimal production batch sizes, which does not necessarily translate into reduced energy use, as operational energy requirements remain constant. Our findings emphasize the delicate balance between cost components and energy use, highlighting that increased electricity costs and emissions do not directly lead to overall cost savings or improved energy efficiency.
