Abstract

Dental caries is a major problem in children's mouths that can be avoided if they are taught to take care of their teeth and gums from a young age. Elementary school age is ideal for instilling the habit of brushing teeth, and the school's role becomes increasingly important, one of which is the School Dental Health Centre (UKGS). The UKGS, on the other hand, has not been going well at four elementary schools in Karangtengah Village. As a result, a revitalization program for the UKGS is required. Counseling and toothbrushing movements, as well as dental and oral health checks, are all part of the UKGS revitalization program. The purpose of this program is to increase the knowledge of teachers and UKGS supervisors about UKGS and dental and oral health. This activity began with a pre-test followed by the presentation of UKGS revitalization material and ended with a post-test. This education is able to increase the knowledge of teachers and UKGS supervisors about UKGS and dental and oral health.

Abstract

Chronic hepatitis can lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Cirrhosis of the liver appears asymptoma-tic so it is not detected, including during dental treatment. Oral manifestations of cirrhosis of the liver include candidiasis, li-chen planus, ulcers, xerostomia, erosions, and tongue abnormalities. Immunosuppressant conditions in patients with liver cir-rhosis and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics can cause oral candidiasis. A 69-year-old male who came with complaints of right abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, weakness, and bloody bowel movements for 1 week. The patient complains of a sto-mach that is getting bigger and feels tight. The patient was diagnosed with cirrhosis liver and HCC. Oral manifestations in patients with liver cirrhosis include bacterial and fungal infections such as dental caries, periodontitis, and candidiasis. Oral candidiasis is inflammation of the oral mucosa caused by infection with the fungus Candida albicans which is an opportunistic microorganism. Drugs that can be given in first-line candidiasis conditions are nystatin, ampotesin B, and clotrimazole. It is concluded that one of the oral manifestations in liver cirrhosis was oral candidiasis due to immunosuppressant conditions.

Abstract

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a widely used food additive that enhances flavor. However, excessive MSG intake during pregnancy and lactation may pose health risks to both the mother and the developing fetus, particularly in terms of tooth and bone development. This study aimed to investigate the effect of maternal oral administration of MSG during pregnancy and lactation on calcium levels in the teeth and alveolar bones of rat offspring. This research is a laboratory experiment with a post-test-only control group design. Thirty pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were randomly allocated into three groups: a control group receiving distilled water and two treatment groups receiving MSG at doses of 3 mg/g BW and 6 mg/g BW, respectively. MSG was administered orally from the 5th day of pregnancy until the end of the lactation period. The calcium levels in the teeth and alveolar bones of the offspring were measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc LSD. The mean calcium levels in the teeth and alveolar bones of the offspring in the MSG treatment groups were significantly lower than those in the control group (p < 0.05). The reduction in calcium levels was dose-dependent, with the higher MSG dose (6 mg/g BW) resulting in a more pronounced decrease compared to the lower dose (3 mg/g BW). Maternal MSG intake during pregnancy and lactation leads to a dose-dependent decrease in calcium levels in rat offspring’s teeth and alveolar bones, suggesting that excessive MSG intake during these critical periods potentially leads to impaired tooth and bone development.

Abstract

Patients with thalassemia generally have high caries rates. Dental caries in children can have a negative impact on daily activities and quality of life. Researchs on the comparison of caries and oral health related quality of life between thalassemia children and healthy children provides inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to compare dental caries and oral health-related quality of life between children with thalassemia major and healthy children. This study was a cross sectional study involving 17 children with thalassemia mayor and 22 healthy children who were selected by purposive sampling in Banyumas, Central Java. Caries was assessed using the DMFT/deft index through digital panoramic radiographs and clinical photographs of the oral cavity. Oral health-related quality of life was assessed using the Indonesian version of the Child Oral Health Impact Profile-SF 19 questionnaire. DMFT /deft scores in thalassemia major children and healthy children were 2.64 ± 2.06 and 2.23 ± 1.38, respectively. OHRQoL scores in thalassemia major and healthy children were 56.82 ± 10.35 and 56.73 ± 7.70, respectively. There was no significant difference between DMFT/deft scores and oral health-related quality of life scores between thalassemia major children and healthy children (p=0.663 and p=0.974, respectively). Nevertheless, oral health in children with thalassemia should be improved.

Abstract

Background: Orthodontic treatment focuses on correcting abnormal teeth and jaw positions for better facial esthetics. Abnormal teeth can be corrected by interincisal angle, while vertical angle can determine the facial growth pattern. Purpose: Analyze the interincisal and vertical angles on convex facial profiles of Javanese orthodontic patients in the Banyumas Regency. Method: Analytical descriptive research was conducted with a cross-sectional design. A purposive sampling technique was used to obtain lateral cephalograms totaling 33 based on inclusion and exclusion criteria from three locations. The lateral cephalogram was traced using tracing paper, while the interincisal and vertical angles were measured based on Steiner's analysis. Two operators carried out measurements, starting with tracing validation and the Kappa test. Furthermore, the results were from the average measurement of the two operators. Result: The mean interincisal and vertical angles were 115.30° and 37.04° with a protrusive inclination and hyperdivergent face, respectively. The correlation test showed a p-value of 0.432 (p > 0.05), meaning there was no relationship between the interincisal and vertical angles in Javanese orthodontic patients. Conclusion: There is no relationship between the interincisal and vertical angles in the convex facial profile of Javanese orthodontic patients in the Banyumas Regency.

Abstract

Background: Calprotectin is a neutrophil secretion product that serves as one of the biomarkers for periodontal tissue inflammation. Calprotectin levels in Gingival Crevicular Fluid (GCF) are reported to increase in periodontitis conditions. Celery (Apium graveolens) contains flavonoids and polyphenols that have potential anti-inflammatory properties. The topical microemulsion-gel formulation offers optimal bioavailability of active substances when applied to periodontal pockets. Objective: To determine the effect of celery microemulsion-gel on GCF calprotectin levels in an experimental model of chronic periodontitis. Methods: This experimental study used 25 male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) divided into 5 groups (n=5): healthy control group, negative control group, and three treatment groups receiving Apium graveolens microemulsion-gel at concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 100%. The chronic periodontitis model was induced using P. gingivalis. Apium graveolens microemulsion-gel (0.7 ml) was applied to the inflamed gingival sulcus for 7 days. GCF samples were collected using filter paper and calprotectin levels were measured using ELISA method. Data analysis was performed using One-Way ANOVA followed by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. Results: GCF calprotectin levels in the Apium graveolens microemulsion-gel treatment groups were lower compared to the negative control group (p<0.05), with the lowest levels observed in the 50% concentration group. There was no significant difference between the treatment groups and the healthy control group (p>0.05). Conclusion: Apium graveolens microemulsion-gel effectively reduces GCF calprotectin levels in chronic periodontitis model, indicating an anti-inflammatory effect.

Abstract

Background: β-thalassemia major patients exhibit higher dental caries prevalence due to systemic complications including iron overload from regular blood transfusions. This study aimed to assess dental caries status, salivary pH, and buffer capacity in β-thalassemia major patients and investigate correlations with ferritin blood concentration.Method: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 24 β-thalassemia major patients aged 12-17 years. Salivary function was assessed by salivary pH and buffer capacity. Dental caries status was evaluated using the DMF-T index. Ferritin blood concentrations were correlated with salivary function and dental caries using Pearson analysis.Outcome: Mean salivary pH was 5.74±0.63 (acidic), buffer capacity was 3.98±0.21, DMF-T score was 6.17±1.97, and ferritin level was 5830.54±2823.91 ng/mL. Ferritin levels showed moderate negative correlations with salivary pH (r=-0.718, p<0.001) and buffer capacity (r=-0.737, p<0.001), and positive correlation with DMF-T scores (r=0.696, p<0.001). Strong negative correlations were found between DMF-T scores and salivary pH (r=-0.915, p<0.001) and buffer capacity (r=-0.913, p<0.001).Conclusion: Iron overload significantly compromises salivary parameters, creating an acidogenic oral environment that promotes dental caries development in β-thalassemia major patients, emphasizing the need for integrated oral health monitoring in thalassemia management protocols.
