Abstract

This study compares two on-line texts reporting the same news. This study is meant to find out a possibility of the both news alignments seen from the angle of critical discourse analysis of Sara Mills which looks at the perspective of feminism, and the power relations implied in the texts reflected by the words, phrases, and clauses used. This as well studies the accuracy of the equivalence of transferred messages to their source text, and what social and cultural aspects behind the discourse strategy are applied by the authors in the news.   The findings revealed that both the original and the translated news tend to represent woman positively. Seen from the micro features used, woman was positioned proportionally in the texts. Woman does not only take the object position, but also the subject position.  However, some choice of words refers to relatively downgrading which still reflects the man world, especially in the translated version where power relations is clearly influencing. The equivalence of the messages can be considered quite accurate with a discourse strategy of extension. In summary, both texts support gender equality, with some recommendation of a more careful choice of words to attain high equivalence of original message Key words: feminism, gender, equality, power relations, equivalence, discourse strategy

Abstract

AbstractThis paper addresses the English translation of specific Sundanese cultural references in the English Translation of selected Sundanese short stories. The issue of translatability is highlighted as the paper explores the nuances of possible meanings from the selected words. The content analysis on Watson’s English translations of selected Sundanese short stories in “Neng Maya” is framed by theoretical propositions from Molina & Albir’s translation techniques and Nababan’s translation quality assessment. Using the methods of Spradley procedure, it is revealed that the language units found in the source texts re words and phrases, while in the target texts, clauses are also found. The types of cultural words exist in the short stories are: words of emphasis, verbs, nouns, and adverbs. The translation techniques mostly used are deletion, equivalence, modulation, reinforcement, literal, and amplification. The techniques used by the translator have led to lack of translation quality, specifically the accuracy aspect.

Abstract

This study examines translation shifts in verb phrases and their impact on the singability and sense of song lyrics in the subtitles of the musical film Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), available on the Max streaming platform. Based on Catford’s (1965) theory of translation shifts and Low’s (2017) translation song criteria of singability and sense, this study analyzes how shifts in verb phrase structure affect the musical and narrative integrity of translated lyrics. 18 songs from the film were selected for analysis. The study categorizes the translation shifts into unit, class, structure, and intra- system shifts and evaluates whether these shifts preserve or alter the original meaning and performability of the lyrics. The findings highlight the challenges of subtitle translation in musical films and offer insights for preserving the emotional and musical experience in the target language. Keywords: translation shift, verb phrase, singability, sense, musical film
