Abstract

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is one of the most influential schools in linguistics in the world today. As a theoretical concept, SFL departs from a philosophical foundation and a particular scientific paradigm. This paper seeks to trace the philosophical foundation of the SFL by comparing it with structuralism and formal linguistics. It also determines the positivism tracks in SFL and how the structural-functional paradigm that has also grown in social sciences manifests in the underlying assumptions and the research methods in SFL.

Abstract

Social media has become an important platform for everyone to broadcast information, opinions, and emotion freely and borderless in today's society. Among other social media, Twitter is the most well-known social media platform for idea-sharing. With a resource such as hashtags, people can search, follow, and contribute to a specific topic, which can create a nationwide and even worldwide discussion. With such a high engagement between users, how the twitter users use language to manage interpersonal role-relationship effectively will determine how smooth a communication goes. Character education is an integral part of Indonesia's education system.  Therefore, in this internet era, it is also essential to understand the language resources of interpersonal meaning that students can exploit to engage more positively while exercising their freedom of expression in social media. This study draws upon the Systemic Functional Linguistic's (SFL) theory of interpersonal metafunction (Halliday, 1978; Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014; Martin, 1992) that focuses on Mood and Modality and  the Appraisal system (Martin, J.R.; White, 2005). As a case study, the data are taken from a trending topic in Indonesia Twitter, by choosing purposively some data that can best reflect the variety of interpersonal meaning. This study shows that specific interpersonal language resources can produce a more negotiated stance and solidarity that can lessen personal conflicts between users and encourage more positive communication.

Abstract

Abstract

Obeying the cooperative principle is an important rule that must be done to attain a good and relevant conversation, which can be divided into four categories of maxims, such as maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of manner, and maxim of relation. However, in everyday life, there are still many people who flout these maxims which causes their conversation to be ineffective. This study aims to determine the types of flouting maxim found in The Mitchells vs. The Machines film is based on the Cooperative Principle theory of Grice (1975). This study also aims to analyze the reasons of flouting maxim committed by characters using Flouting Maxim Strategies theory from Cutting (2002) and Illocutionary Functions of Politeness theory from Leech (1983). The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the utterances of the characters that flout the maxims in the film through the observation method. The results showed that there were 45 cases of flouting maxim found in the film. The maxim that is flouted the most is the maxim of relation. There were several reasons the characters flouted the maxims. Related to strategies and functions, the most frequently used reasons are the strategy of being irrelevant and competitive function. This is because the characters tend to say things outside the topic being discussed with the intention of asking people to do something.

Abstract

Discourse markers (DMs) play a crucial role in making conversations clear and smooth, but their function in stand-up comedy remains underexplored. While previous research has examined DMs in speeches and films, little attention has been given to their use in comedy. This study focuses on cognitive DMs, which reflect thinking processes, elaboration, or self-correction, and analyzes their use in Matt Rife’s stand-up routine. Unlike other DMs, cognitive DMs convey the speaker’s mental state, guide the audience’s comprehension, and signal self-monitoring, all of which are integral to the comedic performance. The descriptive qualitative method was used to examine a popular 2023 stand-up special, focusing on how Rife uses these markers to structure his jokes and connect with the audience. This study found 151 cognitive DMs, categorized into four types: elaboration such as “like”, thinking processes like “um”, Assessment of the listener’s knowledge about utterances like “you know what I mean”, and self-correction “I mean”. The most frequently used marker was “like,” primarily serving the function of elaboration. The study shows that cognitive DMs help with timing, clarifying jokes, and engaging the audience. This research sheds light on how DMs are used in comedy and suggests that further study could improve our understanding of their role in making humor effective and engaging.

Abstract

Language is something that we use to communicate with others. The function of language has an important role in addressing people’s intent or purpose. Thus, the use of language should be right and fit with the situation and the goal to do. In doing the communication, some people would be delivering their message explicitly. But some of them deliver the message implicitly, they tend to use signs and symbols. One of the studies that talked about the meaning of the language in a certain sign is semiotic. Semiotic is the study that discusses the signs, which signs are divided into verbal and visual signs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the verbal and visual signs and the meaning itself in the advertisement this research is needed because some of the advertisers put the message behind their advertiser, which means that the message is not only delivered explicitly. The method used in this study is a qualitative method. The data utilized in this study were taken from YouTube. To investigate the information, this review utilized the theory of Semiotic by Saussure (1983), the theory of meaning from Barthes (1976), and the supporting theory of color by Cerrato (2012). The analyst tracked down 8 verbal signs and 9 visual signs.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine what type and function of discourse markers occur in spoken language, especially in public informal conversation, using Fraser's (2009) theory. The data was taken from a popular talk show entitled 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Falon.' This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with five chosen episodes of 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Falon' from February to April 2023. Based on the findings, four types of discourse markers and six functions of discourse markers were found in the data. The most used discourse markers were elaborative, and the most used function was to denote additive information or ideas. In contrast, inferential markers were the most infrequently used discourse marker in the data. Moreover, the most infrequent function of discourse markers found in the data was to conclude information or ideas since this shows belongs to light entertainment.
