Abstract

Abstract

Serat Yusup is one of the popular Islamic literary works in Java, especially in East Java. This literary work is a handwritten ancient manuscript written in the form of tembang macapat, in Javanese language, and using Pegon or Javanese script. Serat Yusup which create by the students (santri) is inspired by Surah Yusuf, the 12th Surah of the Quran. As a literary work, its story differs significantly from its inspirational text, and there are so many of it. In relation to this, the question arises: what are the reasons behind the creation of Serat Yusup and why is it highly favored by the Muslim community in East Java? This article aims to uncover the popularity of Serat Yusup in East Java. The primary data source for this article is ancient manuscripts; therefore, the appropriate method to study it is philology. From the discussion of its content, it is estimated that there are three reasons for the adaptation of Serat Yusup: it represents Islamic teachings, Javanese culture, and human ideals. In conclusion, Serat Yusup was composed in the form of Javanese Islamic literary work not only for aesthetic fulfilment and creative expression of its student creators but also to spread Islam in East Java.

Abstract

Al-Attas in one of his sub-chapters mentions the use of the word 'Ikan Tunggal' (Unique Fish) in one of Hamza Fansuri's works entitled Sha’ir Jawl fasal fl bayan ‘Ilm al-Suluk wa’l-Tawhid. "Ikan Tunggal" or Unique Fish is a symbol of the Spirit, or can be interpreted as 'soul' or 'al-Ruh'. The problem discussed is whether the meaning of "ikan" brought by Hamza Fansuri affects the meaning of "ikan" in Malay texts or not. The corpus data used comes from the Malay Concordance Project by utilizing the direct search and chronological order features to bring up the word "ikan" in different texts and periods. This is qualitative research and the collected data would be analyzed with descriptive methods. All the collected data would be interpreted one by one according to the context in the text itself and with some addition to the secondary data, which is another research to support the arguments. The results of this paper conclude that the concept of "ikan" brought by Hamza Fansuri was not immediately accepted and followed by Malay authors and copyists because they still have their own variety. However, two works are excluded from interpreting "ikan" with such a concept, namely "ikan" as a sign in a dream and "ikan" as a catastrophic phenomenon from Allah SWT.Keyword: Hamzah Fansuri; Al-Attas; Ikan; Naskah Melayu; Semiotics; Roland Barthes.

Abstract

ASEAN has three pillars of cooperation, namely the political and security pillar; economic pillar; and socio-cultural pillars. In the context of the socio-cultural pillar, the ASEAN region has an extraordinary diversity of manuscripts; has an extraordinary diversity of languages, scripts, culture and religious content. However, ASEAN also has its own challenges, such as conflict or extremism that could threaten the existence of manuscripts. One of the ASEAN regions that has armed conflict but has many Islamic manuscripts is Marawi, which has scientific relations with Indonesian ulama. The aim of this research is to see the transmission of knowledge from Marawi ulama in the Philippines with Indonesian ulama. The method used is a literature study approach. The research results show that the manuscripts in Marawi are connected to scholars in Indonesia. The research conclusion is the connection between Indonesia and the Philippines in the past, both scientific transmission and social, economic and religious interactions. Therefore, the Marawi catalog can be studied in more depth, both for academic purposes and for other studies.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the articulation of state formation as depicted in Hikayat Raja-Raja Pasai and Ādiparwa by examining the hunting events narrated in both texts. By employing the narratology to analyze the events comparatively, this study finds that in the Malay Hikayat, the hunting carried out by Raja Ahmad and Merah Silu (Sultan Maliku’l-Saleh) is incidental, as instead of encountering animal as the primary target, they encounter other objects, directly signifying the formation of a state—namely genealogy and the city/palaces founding as a form of territorialization. Meanwhile, in the Ādiparwa, the hunting is not incidental; the actors do encounter their game (deer), but it results in a curse and death. Nevertheless, hunting articulates genealogy and rituals demonstrating the grandeur of the state. The Malay text originates from the 14th century Sultanate of Samudera-Pasai and was written to justify the relocation of the capital to Pasai for security and defense. In contrast, the Old Javanese text was written in the 10th century under the patronage of Dharmawangśa Tĕguh, aiming to build a myth of descent as a form of political cultural capital. This study contributes to decolonial practice by challenging Geertz's notion that ignores the significance of manuscript. Otherwise, this study sheds light that hunting in the texts is not merely the relation between the king and the game, but discursively also Shapes the political symbol regarding the understanding the historiography of state formation in Southeast Asia. However, as both texts belong to court literature, they tend to reflect elite perspectives and may overlook subaltern voices. Therefore, cross-source analysis and corroboration are necessary to strengthen our understanding of state formation in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Silat Pisau is a distinctive cultural heritage of the Anambas Islands Regency. Although it has existed for quite some time, its presence has remained relatively obscure—possibly due to its exclusion from modern silat organizations. Silat Pisau began to develop several years before Indonesia’s independence in the village of Candi, Anambas Islands Regency, with the knife serving as the primary weapon in its practice. The use of this weapon carries both practical and philosophical significance. This paper aims to provide an overview of the existence and transmission of Silat Pisau in the Anambas Islands Regency. A qualitative approach was employed in this study, utilizing literature review, observation, and interviews. Analysis of the movements and the tradition of inheritance reveals that the knife is used primarily due to its accessibility; it can be found easily in nearly every household. Its relatively small size and shape also make it convenient to carry. Furthermore, the transmission of this tradition contains symbols or signs that can be interpreted as moral guidelines for personal conduct and social interaction.
