Abstract

Adult learners are conscientious learners. They are aware of their education in many ways: what they want to learn, goals they want to achieve, and how they will achieve their goals. What makes adult learners different is that they are expected to have autonomy in their own learning. However, not everyone can show their autonomous learning skills due to various factors, one of which is their experience in the teaching and learning process in the classroom. This research describes the application of project-based learning activities to foster autonomous learning skills among university students in the online classroom setting. The study is designed as qualitative research in which data is collected from online classroom observations and semi-structured interviews conducted with selective participants. There are 60 participants who are divided into two groups. The results of the data collection were analysed using a framework developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014) which is divided into three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The result shows that project-based learning activity develops student skills to be autonomous learners.

Abstract

The research discussed that discourses on tourism in social media often contradict the perspective of sustainable tourism. In engaging with public texts, students must develop a critical mindset to be able to filter information as well as to contribute their constructive ideas in solving problems in society. This could be developed as students learn some language skills in EFL, especially writing. The research applied a qualitative descriptive approach that focused on observing techniques, processes, and learning outcomes of writing skills by implementing Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The research used the participant observation method, where the researcher participated in the activities carried out by the group under study. The research population was students taking the English for Journalism course. The research sourced its textual material from selected online news articles and social media posts. The research involved several steps: student selection, questionnaire design and distribution, CDA and Sustainable Tourism training, feature article writing, writing assessment, and developing CDA integration models in learning. The findings show the positive impact of integrating CDA into writing instruction, notably by introducing the perspective of sustainable tourism. Students demonstrate enhanced critical writing abilities, enabling them to respond and contribute to more informed and thoughtful discussions surrounding tourism and sustainability to the content encountered on the internet that often contradicts the perspective of sustainable tourism. In engaging with public texts, students must develop a critical mindset to be able to filter information as well as to contribute their constructive ideas in solving problems in society.

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the language attitudes and practices of English Literature Study Program students in Bali towards Balinese, Indonesian, and English. Furthermore, the research also sought to determine whether the students’ attitudes affect their language practices daily. Applying a qualitative case study approach, the present research used a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews to collect data from the 100 participants. Results from the collected data reveal that the participants have similarly positive attitudes towards Balinese, Indonesian, and English. However, their language practices differ significantly: they practice Indonesian positively, while practices for Balinese and English are negative. It highlights a complementary relationship between language attitude and practice for Indonesians but a contradictory relationship between Balinese and English. Notably, the research identifies a generational shift in the practice of Balinese and a potential replacement by English among the cohort in particular and the young generation in Bali generally. These findings underscore the urgency of promoting and preserving the practice of Balinese. The research contributes novel insights into the impact of English on the linguistic dynamics of youth in Bali, especially those who enroll in English Language Programs at universities in Denpasar.

Hence, the results of this study shows there are 78 or 100% data involved as syndetic coordination. There are 56 or 71,80% used coordinator and, 14 or 17,95% used coordinator but, 1 data or 1,28% used coordinator or and 7 data or 8,97% used coordinator so. Abstract

This study investigates the psychological dimensions of the main character in the film Shadow and Bone using Bernhardt’s (1953) theory of human motivation. The analysis focuses on five key motivational categories: organic needs, desire, emotions as motives, feelings and attitudes as motives, and social motives. Through qualitative descriptive methods, 24 instances of psychological motivation were identified from the film. The findings indicate that desire-related motivations (33.3%) and organic needs (29.1%) are most dominant in shaping the character of Alina, the protagonist. These motivations are closely tied to Alina’s experiences of personal conflict, social rejection, and emotional struggle, which drive her actions and development throughout the narrative. The study highlights how cinematic characters can serve as complex psychological representations, enriching narrative depth and enhancing audience empathy. This research contributes to the interdisciplinary discourse between psychology, literature, and film studies, emphasizing the importance of psychological realism in character construction.

Abstract

Advertisements are an effort of the company to attract the customer’s attention by using attractive colours, words, pictures, and so on. Hopefully, the product that they sell will be better known by the people. This study presents the verbal and non-verbal signs contained in the Starbucks advertisement. Besides presenting verbal and non-verbal signs, this study also explains the meaning of the verbal and non-verbal signs. Two Starbucks advertisements were used as data sources. The data source has been taken from the internet. The theory used in this study is the theory of semiotics that was proposed by Saussure (1983) to describe verbal and non-verbal signs. The theory proposed by Barthes (1977) to analyse the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs and the supporting theory of the meaning of colours was proposed by Wierzbicka (1996). As a result, the writer found six (6) verbal signs and six (6) non-verbal signs in this Starbucks advertisement.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of figurative language in Adele’s album 30 and Avril Lavigne’s album The Best Damn Thing. The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the types of figurative language found in each song of both albums, and (2) to analyze the most dominantly used figurative language in each album and interpret its meaning. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, using all songs from the two albums as data sources. The findings reveal that Adele’s 30 features eight types of figurative language: simile, metaphor, personification, metonymy, symbol, paradox, hyperbole, and understatement. In contrast, Avril Lavigne’s The Best Damn Thing contains four types: simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole. Hyperbole emerges as the most dominantly used figurative language in both albums. These findings suggest that hyperbolic expressions play a central role in conveying emotional intensity and artistic expression in contemporary pop music.
